Theory

Fast travel is included in the game against the majority of player's opinions of it as a gambit to make it easier for reviewers, who have a limited time to review the game, to give this a high score. This high score leads to more sales.

Like I said, just a theory, but do you think it holds any truth?

No need for conspiracy theories really. The simple fact is that Bethesda's main target group belongs more or less to the younger generation of gamers, who grew up playing action/fps console games and have no previous experience with any of the RPGs that came out in the 90s. It is only natural that they have a different concept as to what RPGs are and how immersion and fast travels should work compared to players who have been around before 3d graphics and the like. I'm not saying this is a bad or a good thing, just that times are changing and companies are adapting to the demands of the market.

No, not really.

The fast travel is fine, to me, Oblivion was so engrossing and filled with atmosphere that I tried to go by foot/horse as much as possible and restricted my fast travel, a lot of the times, to the main cities. I love Morrowind too, but I see no reason to leave fast travel out as it's sometimes convenient yet easy enough to ignore without (imo) taking too much of a hit on immersion.

How come you're able to imagine a whole backstory for your character yet you are unable to imagine yourself a transport system? If all else fails there are mods of course :P

Yes, but I'm talking about an alternative fast travel system ala Silt Striders. For roleplaying and immersion purposes, I would like this to be in the game alongside the insta-click fast travel. You're right, we don't have confirmation that it isn't in. But it's probably a safe hypothesis based on statements made thus far. And I'm just saying that it never occurred to me before that the reason for its ommission may well be that they already have a system that does what it does, and they view it as redundant. :(

I agree with your assessment. This is how I see it:

Fast travel is a near guarantee (99%)
Mounted travel is 90% (IMO)
A "pay-for-travel" system is 50% (IMO)

I think Beth understands people would like to see a silt-strider-like system. The question for them is going to be "How many ways of travel do we really need to include and do we have development resources to add a pay-for-travel system".

Honestly, I hope they implement one just for the sake of having options (if it doesn't come at the cost of other, more important features), but if not I'll stick to my trusty two feet. Never liked fast travel or horses in OB.

The forums aren't representative of the fans. I suppose you'd call us the 'hardcoe' fans, who bothered to sign up for the forums and enjoy discussing every meticulous aspect of the games. It just so happens that the same kind of people who do that, also prefer more realistic forms of transport and so are against fast travel. The majority of fans would actually be for it, I expect, as a more convenient method.

i agree with you on this i bet for a majority of people oblivion was their first es game and havent even bothered to look or take the time to play the earlier games and get a feel for it my brother did that and he hated morrowind because he couldnt adapt to the combat or find where to go
