I went into the institute and murdered everyone in sight including Shaun. Then about 400 synth patrollers spawned and I killed them all but I can't leave the institute because a key is required

Don't rely on autosaves, EVER. They typically happen at terrible times I would recommend disabling them.

Damn alright looks like 20 hours is gone last save I have was at the police station
