Is there anyway to simulate a hunter/pet build?

Can a hunter-type use his follower as melee? I don't suppose there's a way to disable the follower's archery talents to get him/her to melee on demand. I thought it would be fun to send in the follower, like you would a pet, to keep the NPC busy while I shot them from afar.

Use a summoned familiar or a dog. They only use melee and would better fit a Hunter type character anyway.

Just find a follower that does not use ranged attacks like magic or bows.

Conjuration. You can resurrect animals after killing them. A friend of mine is running around with a bear and a sabre-cat permanently at his side because of the master conjuration spell.
Roleplay it as if you stun the animal first, then tame it with the spell rather then as necromancy.
You can also get a dog companion.

Archer/ 1h type with conjuration for familiar.

Or if you don't want to go the magic route, find/buy a staff of the familiar (I think that's what it is called). You just have to keep it charged.

Nicely enough, I gave that staff to Lydia and she conjures the familiar for me in battle.

Can you not just swap out the bow for something else in their invo? I know you can with Lydia.

If you are on PC you can type removeallitems on follower in console. that would remove all their items including hidden ones. If they have no bow in inventory, they will use melee only.
