There are only 748 steps to High Hrothgar. Yeah, I counted.

“I have been promised 7,000 steps, and I am going to count them. Our world artists are amazing. We have just an amazing team, and they put so much detail in the world, so they didn’t blink when I said ‘it MUST HAVE 7,000 steps. When you look at all the stuff we have in the world, 7,000 steps obviously is not that hard.”

Todd lied?

Is that counting actually steps like on a staircase, or one foot in front of the other steps?

He is counting staircase steps... I don't know if it meant literal steps. I mean I don't relate climbing with only stairs.

No, there aren't 7,000 steps. A variety of huge nerds have done various different tests, from counting all of them (accounting for those covered by snow as best as possible) to calculating the approximate distance between the base and the summit, then dividing that distance by the approximate length of an individual step as shown on-screen.

No matter which huge nerd-[censored] method is employed, there always turn out to be far fewer than 7,000 steps.

If you go the full way to the summit it's 926, or so I've been told.

Long been done post. First, consider counting every "step" block of stone. Second, think about how many blocks of stone are under snow and dirt. My guesses only. Who gives a [censored].

Nah it's called lying. He said he would personally count every step to make sure.

according to the game's scale, an appropriate representation of 7,000 steps would be 350. So, the game has what is equivalent to over 14,000 steps, assuming your count is accurate.

Regardless of either of those points, Todd said there would be 7,000 steps and he didn't put them in the game? This is total bull. I'm throwing my disc in the microwave.

It was also a bit dissapointing the first time for me, too. When I reached High Hrothgar for the first time, I was like "NO WAY there were 7000 steps in there"...

I don't know why they had to lie in such menial thing, though...

Do you really think people care about "scale"? I personally couldn't care less about it. Todd said 7000 steps. The NPC's in the very game says 7000 steps. I was ready to make a long 7000 steps' pilgrimage...and there are not even the half of them. A bit dissapointing...

You guys should see rpgcodex's list of developer boasts, exaggerations, over-enthusiastic blustering and outright lies told about Oblivion before it was released. The amount of stuff that was "promised" but never made it into the game is simply staggering.

Skyrim is pretty tame by comparison.

My buddy counted them twice. The first time he counted it as his character popped over a step.. which is incorrect. He came out with 700 or so steps. But then he counted the actual steps and it was around 2K or so.

Again. We are not discussing the game's quality here. It's a great game. Please stop changing the subject.

Ha ha, it's all a ruse so people can brag to the people back home after their pilgrimage. In reality, you walk a few, then a tour bus takes you the rest of the way, stopping at the gift shop so you can get your "I climbed the 7000 steps" t-shirt and have your picture taken next to the marker.

Don't forget to pick up Greybeard plushies for the kids.

I counted them. There are 7000 steps!

Take your time to count them, or you'll miss most of them. If you fail to count 7000, do it again and take even more time. Maybe a day. If that fails again, take a week.

I contributed constructively first. Besides, the entire discussion here is that Todd lied about the number of steps he would include in the game. I was sarcastically exaggerating how little this mattered. Things get proposed, then cut from the final product. It happens.
