Is there a definitive reason for Skyrim freezing?

Hi there,

So here is the situation, I have been plagued for a long time by Skyrim freezing, the kind where the screen freezes permanently but sound continues and you have to ctrl-alt-del to the task manager which says Skyrim is "not responding" and end process. Over the last year it has happened, sometimes more often than others, with it being particularly bad right now.

Now, a little background. First my system:

i5-2500k@3.8 GHz
EVGA GTX 670 4GB
16 GB Corsair Vengeance RAM
850W Coolermaster PS
120GB SSD for Skyrim
Windows 7 64

I have done many fresh installs of Skyrim over the past year, and always have the problem. I do run a modded game, but have the problem whether it's lightly or heavily modded, currently I am following the STEP guide, and adding other mods I enjoy, SkyRe, Frostfall, Deadly Dragons, etc. For the texture replacers I use the medium version, I have not gone crazy with 4K texture re-placer's all over the place. I have also disabled the official HD packs. I do use ENB (Sharpshooters), but I get the freezes whether I use ENB or not. I get a steady 57 FPS except for the most demanding areas, where it may drop to 45 FPS for a second or two. I should also add I almost never CTD, maybe once a week. I use BOSS, Wrye Bash, Tes5 Edit, and am very careful to not use mods that conflict. All my reports from BOSS etc are very clean. I don't even get lag drops when fighting 7 or 8 enemies at the same time. I just get random freezes at odd times. Maybe during combat, maybe during exploring, maybe while loading somewhere, it never used to to happen in a indoor cell, but does happen indoors now, especially in Solstheim, it just varies. I use Elys MemInfo too, and I average about 2k memory usage most of the time, and have had freezes when I was 1.7 or 1.8k.

So I just don't understand. What causes this? Is it a mod conflict? a memory issue? a hardware issue? is there any definitive answer? Other than this my game runs flawlessy, silky smooth with ENB and HD textures with very very few CTD's, those are so rare its almost not worth mentioning. I know a lot of people have this issue, I scour the forums and read tons of posts about this same thing, just wondering if I can nail down once and for all what causes this and find a solution. Thanks for any info anyone may provide.

I think whoever figures it out will also figure out the solution to peace in the MIddle East as well as develop cures for cancer, AIDS and common cold.

I wish I could tell you the answer. My game, on a fresh install on my new rig runs better than I had ever believed it could. I do use the Stutter Remover, but I see no drops, jitters, judders or problems. Everything is on Ultra and I have not had a crash. Skyrim ran decently, but not beautifully on my XP rig.

I am not using the Hi Res texture packs, which would be the only difference between my install and most others. I also don't run a bunch of mods, I have a body replacer, a house teleport ring, RLO, Pure Waters, Calliente's Armor Tweaks, the Unofficial Patches and that's it.

It just occurred to me, I have not updated my UOP's after the 1.9 patch.

@CCNA

Yes I forgot to mention I have tried Windowed mode, the only thing it did was give me slightly worse FPS unfortunately. Thanks for trying to help though!

Is it possible I am running too many script heavy mods? Could that cause it? I use Convenient Horses, and it has a function to test script responsiveness, which I always pass with flying colors, but don't know if that has anything to do with this.
