Hi, I just got Skyrim. I have tried out SkyUI, and that's really good. What I'm missing is a plain old 2D map where I can actually get an overview over the whole of Skyrim. Does something exist?

Zoom in with the mouse wheel and also drag with holding the left mouse, like google maps

Also very useful is at the top, after you have zoomed in to a particular place, and you want to point it out to someone, click the "link to current map" at the top ..

Or do you actually mean a mod ( as per the title - I read your description first before I noticed mod in your title )
