Is it me or is there not as much hype as I imagined?

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 3:23 am

Don't get me wrong, I am pretty excited for Fallout 4 and others are too but something I noticed and feel is less hype as usual for a Bethesda game. I remember the hype for New Vegas and Skyrim. Days after announcement, news outlets would report the news and also report certain rumors and speculation and even report the smallest detail that someone from Bethesda said and make a big deal of it. Reddit and [censored] would be exploding with excitement and moaning. There was something new everyday, real or fake, but I know E3 is around the corner so that may change.

I remember the New Vegas and Skyrim boards would have over 2000+ members and guests lurking and posting a new thread literally every second. So much that some had to be locked because of spam, and this is days after announcement and stayed that way even after E3 (which was just fuel for the fire too). Even at the forum home page there was the 2000+ people PLUS maybe about 1000 or so more lurking in other parts of the forum.

Now with Fallout 4 announced and its appearance at E3 looming, I imagined the Fallout 4 forums being so crowded with the 2000+ members and guests posting and spamming every corner then the forums would lag then glitch out because of the high traffic. Well, for the past couple weeks I noticed the Fallout 4 forum would have at least 60 people then trickle back down to 10-30 people. Reddit is not as a buzzed about it (but obviously r/fallout is). [censored] and other sites don't seem that excited. News outlets are stoked but not as much. Like I said, may change after E3 but idk...

Anyway, sorry if this came off wrong but as I said, I am looking forward to Fallout 4 so I am in no way dissing it...

Thanks for reading my rambling!

Edit: Oh ya, no GameInformer cover story like they did with (Morrowind?), Oblivion, Fallout 3, New Vegas, and Skyrim AND Elder Scrolls Online...

I know, and I am stoked for Sunday night :D

I just remember all Skyrim had was a teaser of Alduin's Wall, no game play or anything and the activity everywhere was MASSIVE.

It's because they've given us so little, there's barely anything to talk about at this point.

Another thing I noticed is no GameInformer cover story like they did with pretty much every major Bethesda title...

I know, not saying it isn't hype :teehee:

Yep, that was fun being a part of it but by now it would be on its 20th thread.

Heck, even when Skyrim devs had the forums create a character and they would post a pic of it, that thread alone had a a big series of threads.

I do get what you're saying tho. It was a lot of fun being a part of the hype in the Nee Vegas forum days. But I feel like that really got started when we had a lot of info to go off of.

It's quite a bit more than that ... Bethesda has multiple Youtube channels:

Bethesda Softworks 13,500,000

BethesdaSoftworksUK 4,869,000

BethesdaSoftworksDE 1,080,000

BethesdaFR 414,000 (Guess it's not as popular in France)

And no telling where else it's uploaded.

Like I said, Skyrim just had a teaser showing nothing but Alduin's Wall and everywhere was buzzing

Can't wait for Sunday though!

Hype. There is hype. I quit smoking cigarettes to save money for this game. (It always bugged me you could get addicted to stuff and alcohol in F3 but couldn't smoke the cigarettes you find everywhere even though NPC's smoke em) i think everybody is so excited they are calm.

Well, actually Skyrim had https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiWEUNjDB6Y along with a release date.

This was seen by every fan around the world at once, as opposed to just the FO4 trailer that some people likely don't even knows exists yet.
E3 will likely bring in the rest of the hype.... Although as people are suggesting, there already is a ton of hype about FO4

indeed. I have cut down my food spending so that I can afford a new PC. of course I decided to budget my food spending any ways since I was spending $600 a month on eating out nearly every day in addition to coffee and energy drinks. So it had to be done any ways.

I remember when Skyrim was announced, if you started a thread here it was buried before you know it since it was so active here.

Skyrim was revealed on a televised award show if I recall. It was a last gen game being released on the PS3 and 360, at least one of which was probably in 75% of all households. The potential customer base was huge.

Fallout 4 was revealed on the internet for PC and next gen consoles, which being much more recent and still relatively expensive are as of yet in far, far fewer households and therefore has a much smaller pool of potential customers to get excited about the game.

I don't expect the game to do as well as Skyrim due to the smaller potential customer base alone. All in all, I think the hype train is moving along pretty well.

Honestly, I think the hype will intensify greatly on June 14-15. The 3 minute in game video reminds and informs what fallout has been, with a hint that new things are coming. By design it creates more questions than it answers. The gaming community has taken notice, and the hype train has left the station, but it will need more fuel before it really starts to move out. Perhaps the most important detail would be learning the projected release date. It's the anchor point from which all marketing and game info will be metered out from.

As for hype levels now, it has obviously dropped off a bit. Just the calm before the storm....

If Fallout 4 ends up being (worse than) Fallout 3 and it doesn't sell well that'd be pretty damn funny to me. Bethesda all confident in themselves, thinking they got the right formula to sell games and apply it even further to Fallout and then it backfires as they barely break even and they panic trying to figure out what went wrong.

(Honestly, I am at that point where I at the end of the day just don't care anymore. )

Over at FunnyJunk whenever there is a game that they are excited about they usually make as many posts about that game as they have been making about Fallout 4. So I'd say they are excited. And the Steam forums seem to be buzzing as well. Maybe Bethesda ought to advertise this forum a bit better along with their trailers and stuff? Maybe there aren't a whole lot of cover from web-sites because they already have a scoop to release but are under contractal obligation from Bethesda to not leak anything?

A lot of people seem to use forums like Reddit and the youtube comments section to express their hype these days. Back when Fallout 3/New Vegas was announced, I was always here...but I've been talking elsewhere about Fallout 4 until now.

Also the trailer racked up 10 million views in less than a week. I've not seen that on a game tease before. :)
