These old threads make me nostalgic...

On topic: This was just a mockup. I think there was one guy who tried to create it from scratch, but he didn't get very far, and that was back in 2011.

Well, it's like in evolution, one species becomes so successful that all the other species are outcompeted. That happened with SkyUI, it grew so fast that all the other modders gave up their attempts.

Don't get me wrong, I use SkyUI and I love it, schlangster and the other guys did a great job. It's just, well, it's always better to have a few options. I for one was hoping for a more old style RPG user interface, but it wasn't to be.

I've heard that argument a couple of times, and while it makes sense to some extend, I don't think that's what actually happened, because:
- The fact that there already is a mod that covers a certain area doesn't stop people from making another one.
- SkyUI only implements a small subset of all features people have requested over the years. Those features include whole menus. There's still plenty of things to do if you wanted to. Example: Make a crafting menu.
- The SkyUI source code is openly available, so if you wanted, you could fork it and do your own thing. The results of the work on SkyUI have actually spawned several other UI mods.

I think the actual reasons are that it's a difficult thing and that nobody else was willing to invest the rather substantial amount of time.
