I don't like when games, or books, or even movies, answer the question of how or why something happened with "because the gods will it." or "it's magic". Personally I like when the lore explains how something works, especially magic. I like when it gives me the feeling of "under these circumstances, this could be how things are, this is how magic exists". Of course, I've never known the elder scrolls series to come out and say "the gods will it" or "it's magic" but it doesn't explain some things, like how magic works and where it comes from. I know magic comes from Aetherius and some books explain how some magic works, like alteration and such. Some in-game books explain the lore of how the world came to be, but that all sounds like how our ancestors tried to explain the world around them through primitive religious views. And we've been able to scientifically explain the goings on around the world through observation and such, instead of relying on religious explanations.
Anyway, I had the thought that maybe all the cultures in the elder scrolls series, are all just people with primitive views on why things happen, similar to our own ancestors. Because, other than mages and scholarly people in the games, the common opinion is "because the gods will it" or "it's magic". Maybe the mer aren't what they think they are, what if they just evolved like everyone else? Also, the Dwemer disappearing all at once, when I first found out about that and how the race was more scientific than mystical, my first reaction was to compare it to Stargate, and the Ancient's entire race ascending. And I've heard in-game, quite a bit, about how they were more focused on science, and only a few were magical, yet Yagrum Bagarn was in another dimension, I assume some plane of oblivion or someplace like the Battlespire. So we know that they can get into Oblivion or someplace similar through non-magical means, which I find interesting, and would explain why mages find it so hard to go there.
Anyway, I'm just rambling, I haven't found any topics about this anywhere, so I'm curious as to the thoughts of other people.
