So is there "Target Magnetism" in Skyrim?

Post » Wed Aug 04, 2010 1:31 pm

I think this deserves its own thread, sorry if this there is already one...

I saw this over on the http://uk.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/elderscrollsvskyrim/show_msgs.php?topic_id=m-1-58012831&pid=615805:

"German gaming mag COMPUTER BILD SPIELE:
Are the fights in skyrim different to them in Oblivion?

Todd Howard:
In oblivion it was sometimes difficult to hit the enemy. In skyrim it's easier for the player: A slight Target-Magnetism helps you strike the enemy. There are a lot of Finishing Moves as well which, for sure, will be loved by the players."

Is this accurate, or has someone made it up?

[EDIT]

It would appear to be accurate. Here's the original CBS article in German:

Keep in mind it's a SLIGHT targeting magnetism. If you ever played any shooter ever you have experienced it and probably never noticed it.

Prolly accurate I'd say. Well, there's bound to be a toggle for that I guess, just like the crosshair, so no worries.

I might have been interested by it insofar it could maybe make it so I don't need to switch to 1st person when I go ranged. So here's the stupid question : it's only for bows, right ?

It's pretty noticeable in all the shooters I've played. And it's really annoying. Toggle option pweez

And spells probably.

Edit* @Alexandur just to be clear I'm not talking about the "snap to target" thing most shooters have. That I find annoying. Magnetism is more like what Halo has.

I don't really mind. Now, by magnetism, does Todd mean you'll have your screen/crosshair having a slight lock threshold on enemies, or does he mean that when you swing your sword there'll be a bit of a "snap" factor so that it hits properly? The latter sounds far less intrusive.

Nah. Most modern shooters are crap. I really only play Doom, Quake, Deus Ex, and Valve's FPS games.

It better be optional.

There are some people who actually can and like to aim.

melee as well, why not? I don't see why it'd matter, it's probably for everything as long as you have your weapon out, it's svck for magic though becuase you never want to shoot at your enemy, but instead slightly in front of them

Oh, yeah, I suppose. Still okay, as long as they keep it for ranged. Don't play nearly enough games to know whether such a feature could be so silly as to concern all weapons. Not even I need help to strike with a blade.

Sounds good, I don't think I'd mind it. Emphasis on slight. It helps make up for the lack of any real depth perception in video games. Plus, anyone ever use hand-to-hand and use the forward-power move without mastery? Your character goes flying across the room and will never hit anything unless the planets align.

Depends if it comensates for that. Anyway it's only magnetisoum auto aim not lock on so you ran drag and fire for even better shots, or just toggle off in menu like all other fp games.

I actually don't hate this, frankly. In FPS' it's irritating because I want to hit where I'm aiming, but missing in oblivion often made no sense - just because the enemy isn't directly in your crosshair doesn't mean your bloody great sword isn't still going to hit them.

There's something lost in translation here. "Strike" is what you do with a melee weapon, not an arrow or spell. Why would you need target magnetism to hit someone with a sword?

That's the thing though. Magnetism only happens when you are up close and personal in Halo. I guess it never bothers me because I'm more of a sniper so I don't experience it that much.

Besides, unless they've added locational damage "aiming" for headshots in Elder Scrolls is pretty pointless anyway. Especially when the arrows guide themselves to the chest while the target is alive.

dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb. Call of duty was ruined by target magnetism

"Oh, I can't see anyone! Oh wait, my target crosshair slowed down when I went over that bush!"

This will ruin immersion. If you're a terrible mellee fighter then stick to magick, if you can't hit anyone with magick then use a bigger blast radius.

Highly dissappointed by this decision

Since when was there target magnetism in Halo? And what exactly is the thing supposed to do?

Try melee on a console, where turning to make your opponent exactly in your cursor is very difficult.

You know when playing Halo and you get close to a enemy your crosshair kind of pulls towards them? That's magnetism. And I said it only happens in Halo when you are up-close. Not really able to pull off head shots or have a real need for great aim at that range.

@Duderino same here.

This is going to produce some interesting arguments. People always complained that their attacks never connected in Morrowind when they were clearly "hitting them", this is just another step towards insanity.
