There is TWO they fear...

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 12:06 pm

The first is cholesterol and high blood pressure...the second is DOVAHKIIN!

The purpose of this post is share my idea about having character models reflect poor lifestyle choices. I'd like all the monsters, men, and mer (including dragons) to have the possibility of contracting obesity, high blood pressure, and/or diabetes. This could be an extension of the disease mechanic already found in existing Elder Scrolls games. I think this could really flesh out the gameworld by introducing varied body statuses that give more variety to character models as well as add an interesting and immersive gameplay mechanic if the player character were to contract one or more of these conditions.

By choosing poor foods our character, and even monsters, giants, and dragons, could become obese and suffer penalties from it. Thoughts?

...No.

I'm all for choosing body types, having the option to be thin or muscular or fat and a bunch of variants of that, but what you're suggesting is just silly.

People aren't going to like this for one main reason. Once they make their character look like they want them to, they'd rather not have the game change that.

No I never eat anything unless its just an easy way to raise my alchemy skill so my guy would be anorexic and then it would just get annoying to have to constantly worry about eating

Not really interested to be honest. Plus, does Skyrim even have a McDonald's? This kind of element doesn't really fit TES and would just be out of place.

1. Technically it'd be "There are TWO they fear. . ." -- Grammar Nazi
2. Nah, this sounds like it'd just be a pain. Then again an obese dragon trying to fly might by funny.
3. Your avatar has dangly parts. LOL

I respect your opinion and the fact you don't like my idea, but I think it's pretty rude (and inaccurate) to call it "silly".

You know, people talk about wanting the ability to make fat characters and such, but I honestly have a hard time imaging anyone doing what the heroes in these games do and remaining fat for very long.

Me myself being diabetic( not through weight but genetic) why would I want to bring my real life ilness into a game?
Added to the fact that this would further increase the incorrect stereotype of all diabetis being caused by being over weight, which it isn't

I might create a fat character as a joke if we can change body weight in the beginning but I wouldn't want them to change throughout the game

Not really, no. Sorry. Maybe it's just me, but an obese guy in a viking helmet struggling to scramble up the 7,000 steps to the Greybeards doesn't exactly scream "hero" to me. Or Dovahkiin for that matter.

And if this has an effect on everyone including dragons, seeing an overweight Alduin would make me say, "You sure you got enough room for the world in that gut big guy?"

I have the last two, I play fantasy games to get away from them.
Also diabetes ( type 1 ) = dead in a few days, in Narnia Nirn a child that contracted it would be dead or a healer would come in and use magic.

Also after one fight after running around all day if insulin was around to inject, you'd most likely hallucinate pass out then die to hypoglycemia as no high carbohydrate food is available.
If insulin was not around you'd die due to Ketones, over a day or so you'll dehydrate, pee constantly, throw up constantly every few minutes even if an empty stomach, not even keep down a sip of water.
Loose your mind, pass out and die.

So no, fantasy survival is one thing what I and others put up with is not.

I see one major problem here... all the diseases you mentioned are all associated with being overweight. A lot of people would be offended most likely, which would lead to backlash towards bethesda... that's something they will want to avoid.

Right on dude, nothing says epic like a dragon dying of a heart attack in the middle of the fight.

It would be interesting, like they did in Fable... and I hope your character can get scars too. I wouldn't give them Diabeetis, but it would be nice to suffer from ill effects if you don't get cured from the already existing in-game diseases.
