So there was a war on the moon and not a single person or computer in the Fallout universe had any mention of it up until this point? I'm expecting a very good in-game explanation for this.

Probably the best place to battle aliens where no humans would know about it other than the ones fighting.
Yes, but then they wouldn't put it on a wall in a museum.
The same reason the Goby Campaign was only in New Vegas? And also the Yangtze Campaign is not very often mentioned in any game... Remember... many sources are lost because of the war. The people don't about anything before the war.
Why on earth (pun intended) would there be a battle on the moon? I mean, it's a resource war and it seems like more trouble to secure than it's worth.
I guess I'll just wait and hear the reason they give.
Are we seriously comparing a military campaign in the desert to space combat? Battles on the moon would have been a major news topic, we get all kinds of terminal entries about the most minor things from before the war but nothing about something as game changing as this? How many military installations have appeared in these games, let alone the repcon buildings in New Vegas where they built rockets? What about all the pre-war ghouls that we meet in these games?
There has been no indication at all before this point that a war on the moon occurred. I'm not going to buy into the idea that this was some lost piece of information when there are simply too many places it could have been found. I'm fine with Bethesda adding in new lore like this, because this is actually pretty damn cool, but I expect some reasonable explanation for it.
As stated by a couple people, Helium-3 is much more abundant on the moon than it is on earth, and it's a great fuel source for FUSION POWER. So, considering that the United States was getting into Fusion, the moon would be a good place to look for fuel.
I think it should be just a small little part of the space race.. A very small physical effort to quell moon-base formations. Nothing too much though because it seems weird that it wasn't mentioned as of yet.
Your Texas flag avatar really completes this comment
Yeah? And?
The Bethblog specifically mentions:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mare_Tranquillitatis
The way its worded suggests that U.S. armed forces were engaged in combat on the moon. Whether or not it is based on a real-life mural has nothing to do with that.
The Sea of Tranquility was the landing site of the Apollo 11, but why mention the sea of Tranquility in the same breath as hard-fought military battles including the bloody battle of Iwo Jima? It almost makes it seem like the Apollo 11 landing was an actual contested fight or series of fights.
^ TIL battles were fought on the moon.
Yea I think it was supposed to be a scheme between the enclave/vault tech. There was supposed to be a mission where you road a rocket to space station and some other stuff. I thought that got scrapped with van buren, but there is possibility that it is the way we could be going.
You're missing the entire point. Why list the Sea of Tranquility as if it was a battle zone in the likes of Iwo Jima, Concord, and the Anchorage Front Line? Each one of those involved American dead and were actual battles, not Cold War pissing contests.
It suggests that landing Apollo 11 (or just the moon landing in general) may have actually involved some physical conflict. Perhaps fighting between astronauts/cosmonauts.
The epitaph is commemorating fallen soldiers and their service, not great American accomplishments or the space race.
Fallout 4 DLC: To the Moon Alice!
Journey to the Moon on a ramshackle rocket built on a wing and prayer, to stop a weapon from the Back When from decimating the entire Eastern seaboard that has mysteriously come back online after 200 years dormant.
...Getting there was the easy part. Stopping the weapon will be a challenge. Getting back home...Will be a b---.
So basically its the BOMB 01 orbital missile base from Van Buren.... but on the moon?
If Van Buren was anything more than a concept and a partial demo build...Sure, we can say that.
U.S History is only relevant in the Fallout universe when its convenient, the games are obviously fictional and any sort of continuity error is usually explained away by a parallel universe hand wave. So bickering about comparisons of monuments in real life VS Fallout universe (even when its fairly clear that fallout is all but directly emulating one) is a moot point because they're going to write around it.
