You're not forced to to them.

As a matter of fact, besides cass you're not really even supposed to grind for them, ED-E, Raul, Arcade and Boone for example simply come out with it over time if you hang out with them a lot.

I agree, ok to do once you figured out the best way to trigger them. Initially though a royal pain.

Not what I would call very intuitive quests at all.

That is because at least the way I view the NV companion quests is that most of them are not shoved in our faces, as the companions may not be considering them as being overly important until you do something or wander across something which causes them to consider the 'quest in potentia' in a more active way.

Take Gannon's for example, he's so used to hiding his origins he doesn't even consider telling anyone else let alone the courier about them until you show him that you won't instantly turn on him upon finding out his origins.

Ed E again flat out can't tell you about his 'quest' until you stumble across the triggering events.

For Cass without your actions, she wouldn't know enough to bring her quest into being without the couriers actions.

Boone again a matter of trust.

Raul again it's the couriers actions which cause him to rethink his attitude.

I admit you learn Lily's and Rex's basically as soon as you pick them up, but for the rest it's your characters actions/inactions which cause the companion quests to trigger or not.

When I completed Veronica's quest I felt like I did such an awesome thing that I wanted to go to the Obsidian's office and kiss their feet.

Haha, Veronica's quest is indeed great.

Cass's annoys me though, due to the fact you have to visit the caravans in the proscribed order. We walked past one of the caravan wrecks about twenty times on our travels together, and yet it never occurs to her to stop and investigate until we've visited the first two? Irritating.

More generally OP, trying to force some of the companion quests - Boone, Raul, Lily, ED-E - is a recipe for tedium. I'm not even sure if its possible to do them all on one playthrough, I've never managed it. Better off sticking with one companion for a while and letting it come naturally.

In a way you are compelled to do the quests. You cannot have the companions and just not do the quests if you want them to have reasonable endings.

Personally I thought Veronica's was the most ridiculous, parts of it were really really good but the part that weren't just spoilt it. Hers was the easiest to trigger for me, silly thing was we'd only been traveling for a couple of days and she wanted to drag me off somewhere else. Ed-e's I thought was great but a right pain in the neck to get it right the first time without having to look it all up on the wiki. Boone's badly written, but I liked the actual event. Lily and Rex's :yucky: Arcade's was simply great but again a pain to trigger and left far too late in the main plot. Cass's was ok. Raul's initial circumstances were well done but his quest felt like it was thrown together at the last minute, and really just a lot of guess work with how to trigger his quest as well. He was not exactly in a low level area which meant the opportunities to trigger his quest would have most likely been and gone.

Companions having quests was a good idea, but the triggering method of activating their quests, well I hope they don't repeat that in the next game.

/edit I did get them all done in one playthrough, just for the achievement. It was quite a bit of work.

Assuming lots of players feel the same way, that could explain why they seem to be dragging their feet with the patch and DLCs!

No.

First you complain that you don't like grinding for them, now you also dislike taking it easy and letting your trusty companions open up on their own.

What DO you want? Should we take your save file and complete all the quests for you?

The only quest that I find "grinding" is Arcade Gannon's but his is well worth it.

Also if you find it a pain walking around, there is fast travel.

Really? I found the companion quests to be some of the best quests in the game, involving the best characters. I like the system with most of them that they will come to you when travel with them for a while. It feels natural.
