Red Lucy would be a good one. She gets to wander around with her hunter.

Justin Beiber would be the new Adoring Fan.

TBH there aren't many characters that I'd actually prefer over the vanilla companions; Obsidian did a good job with those characters IMO (sans Lily and Rex, anyway).

If I had to pick though, I would say:

All 3 companions from Dead Money - Granted, I find Dean a bit annoying, but all 3 were some of the most interesting characters to come out of the entire NV story.

Melissa - Companions who aren't blind NCR lovers are definitely lacking, so it'd be nice to have a Great Khan who'd support evil players. Plus I like her accent. :P

A proper dog companion - Every Fallout prior has had one, and Rex is no substitute. I want my Dogmeat back. :(

Benny - Yeah, he shot you in the head and deserves to die, but dragging him around the Mojave as a pack mule sounds far more entertaining. Personally though, I am disappointed that his role in the story was so brief.

Marcus - I hated Fawkes, and I don't like Lily. They're too. Damn. Loud. Marcus is much more soft-spoken, perceptive, and thoughtful while still managing to be a total badass.

Fortunately, I can just turn most of them into companions at a whim with mods.

Silus (The Centurion POW at Camp McCarran)
Affiliation: Legion/None
Tags: Unarmed, Melee Weapons, Survival
SPECIAL: 8, 5, 4, 4, 4, 3, 8
Ranged: Assault Carbine
Melee: Machete Gladius

How to recruit:
Interrogate him heavily. Once he gets lower than 15% health and you pass a spirit-breaking level 55 speech check against him, he will fall to his knees crying, "Caesar, save me, you bastard!" At this point you can make a deal with Boyd, and convince him that he can be free if he renounces his Legion status, gives all information he has about Legion activity, and follows you indefinitely as a form of "house arrest" and to gain the Courier access to Legion camps unharmed. Showing his current weakness, he accepts these terms. Once he is back to full health, or after a couple days, he will become angry with you and wonder what his reasoning was to make such a horrible deal that defies Caesar's will. You can then convince him that he has doubts regarding his loyalty, upon which he tells you to prove to him why he would have any doubts about the Legion.

Quest: Will of Fire
Silus requests that you show him everything "bad" that the Legion has done, saying this sarcastically as if to say they are perfect. Upon this, you will be forced to investigate Nipton, and find the crying, begging pleas of salvation on a holotape in the back of the Mayor's office, along with three hugging skeletons. This will weaken him. Next, you will travel to the Legion Raid Camp. The Camp will have multiple children tied up around the campfire (and the Powder Gangers if Booted is not completed.) They say they just "cleansed" an oncoming caravan from the South, killing all of the parents and finding "a mass amount of fresh slave meat." Silus will say he would like to free them, but it would defy Caesar's will. You can convince him, if you choose to, making this part of the mission much harder but gaining a lot of karma. Next, travel to Fortification Hill, where a mass amount of slaves have been gathered in the arena and everyone at the fort is gathered around yelling and calling them scum. Upon investigation, it turns out that this group had a plan to escape the fort and was going to enact it, until they were found out. Silus watches with newly opened eyes at the slaves forced to slaughter each other, then the survivor, already mentally broken, gets mauled by multiple mongrels. Caesar stands on the hill above grinning, and yells out, "The impurity has been eradicated!" The entire camp cheers. At this point, Silus turns to you and asks if he has really followed such an evil cause all of this time. You can reply in two ways. One, you can say yes, they are evil, and Silus will denounce the Legion and gain the Faded Crimson perk. He will still wear his armor and will not tell the other Legionaires of his defection, making Legion members that would normally attack still be friendly to you. Second, you can tell him that Caesar is just in ecstasy to remove these impure souls from the world so the will of the Legion as a whole can progress. Upon saying this, Silus will reluctantly stay a Centurion and will gain the Doubter's Denial perk. He will (temporarily) leave you if your Legion reputation gets too low, though, returning to Fortification Hill's entrance.

Faded Crimson:
Silus has denounced the Legion, and feels like he must get retribution for their crimes. Silus will now attack Legion enemies if you do, and will deal 100% more damage to them. In addition, for every Legion enemy he kills (Omertas and other affiliates included), he will deal 50% more damage overall, to all enemies, for 12 hours. This stacks by killing multiple enemies.

Doubter's Denial:
Even though his heart says different, Silus refuses to drop the Legion's ideals. He will deal 100% more damage to NCR enemies. In addition, for every NCR enemy he kills (Crimson Caravan and other affiliates included), he will deal 50% more damage, to all enemies, for 12 hours. This stacks by killing multiple enemies.

definetely dead sea or vulpes

Dead Sea is a must:

Dead Sea. (More detailed)

Requirement:
After completing the Forlon Hope quest for him and agreeing to meet Caesar and completing the first quest Caesar will order Dead Sea to leave Nelson to another Legionnaire and give the PC a helping hand.

Faction interaction:
Dead sea would agree to disguise himself but certain NCR people can still sniff him out so one needs to be careful with him around.

Perk: +10% running speed and +5% critical chance with bladed weapons.
After completing his personal quest's depending on how you complete it you either get Trooper Angst perk which makes NCR Troopers Run away in fear after losing 50% health, NCRangers run away after losing 80% health and Desert Rangers after losing 85% health.
Or you get Battle Rush, whenever combat is engaged (with the [Danger] thingie) you get +20% additional running speed to his current +10% for 10 seconds (in order to close the distance) and Melee and Unarmed weapons get +30% critical chance and +10% critical damage for 10 seconds.

Personal quest:
After getting him along for the ride you can ask him of his past which he is willing to give out but in very short militant answers. (Mostly yes and no answers)
He will explain in a bit more detail of how he left aside his personal desires in order to not have anything hold him back from making Legion succeed in their cause.
But he has a chip on his shoulder.
His brother, Macelius, was also a Legionnaire which he was very close with even under Caesars rule.
Over the two brothers Caesar actually preffered his brother more, both personally and from a tactical and military stand point.
But Macelius and his scouting unit was captured by a NCR scouting party while one of Macelius' recruits were on watch duty.
The scouting party proceeded to torture and kill the legionnaires while leaving one member alive to run back and tell The Legion of what they'd done.
The lone legionnaire refused to run back like a coward and lit a fire that poured out black smoke and wrote what had happened on a note before he killed himself.
Dead Sea's unit were the one's who saw the smoke and found Macelius' unit wiped out.
Dead Sea wants to go on a revenge quest in order to harm those profligates who ended his brothers life.
During his quest you will need to go undercover with him and find out from various NCR officers who this scouting party was and where they are now.
You can decide whether you want to go the easy route and just kill them all (which will give you the Trooper Angst perk) or you can learn more about them and make sure they feel such heartache that Dead Sea felt by dealing with things differently. (Which will give you Battle Rush)
One of the people Dead Sea is out after (Let's say his name is Johnny Boy) could have a brother for example, and by murdering him and sticking his head on a pole outside of Johnny Boy's camp with the words "For Macelius" carved into his forehead make him feel the same pain he did.
There is no "peaceful way" to end his personal quest.
Might seem like it's very biased towards being a murdering bastard but guess what?
These are NCR people.
Dead Sea and The Legion are most likely going to kill them later on anyway.
And Dead Sea's hatred towards these people burns to hard to just "talk him out of it".
It's a great way for assassin characters though since the Battle Rush way requires you to be very stealthy about it.

I would never use a disguise on dead sea because then it would not feel like a legion companion

Well it's only to complete his personal quest, after he's done with his revenge he'll put on his brothers custom Legion armor and never take it off again.

No I haven't. Melissa and Marcus are mine; read the author boxes. :P

And changing Rex isn't a good enough substitute for me, since everyone still actively comments on how he's a robot dog -- not to mention his entire recruitment, quest, and epilogue revolve around that fact.

Dead Sea is a must:

That has to be one of the best companion wishlists that I have read yet. Now I really wish Dead Sea was a companion or just a straight up Legion companion. True to Caesar

I'd like a Legion Companion. It would have to be a new NPC because the one's ingame already have their specific roles.

I'd want Benny as a companion. I'd imagine that he would never take his suit of, and he would constantly say snazy but groan-inducing one liners about everything.

No- bark? I don't think he'd be much use in combat but I'd take him just to hear his comments on your actions as you play. Would be hilarious if he stopped to talk with and give interview to Radio new vegas about your expliots.

Yeah, No-Bark No-Good for combat. But the comments (and maybe a personal questline with No-Bark-style reasonings and twists) are exactly why I'd like him as a companion. :P

I would love to have 10 of Spades as a companion. In skill set he would be the same as Boone, but personality wise quite different. Spade's special quest could involve building up his confidence and it would be adorable to hear him talk during battle with his stutter.
