They Shoulda Been Companions

Post » Fri Jun 26, 2009 3:34 pm

Pretty self-explanatory... Tell us which NPC you wish had been a companion. Bonus points for coming up with their Perk. No spoilers!

I'll start --

No-Bark, from Novac. Bonus Perk -- Animal enemies drop caps.

There are many others I could name but I'll leave it to you wasters to mention them. An Alternate Companions DLC would be pretty neat, wouldn't it?

Victor.
After accepting to help Mr House he would offer to help the PC out.
Perk: Explosives gain a +20% damage with him.

Dead Sea.
After completing the Forlon Hope quest for him and agreeing to meet Caesar and completing the first quest Caesar will tell Dead Sea to leave Nelson to another Legionnaire and give the PC a helping hand.
Dead sea would agree to disguise himself but certain NCR people can still sniff him out so one needs to be careful with him around.
Perk: +15% running speed and +5% critical chance with bladed weapons.

Antony
After agreeing to help Caesar out the player can convince Caesar to give him a legionnaire to help him out, Caesar will send Antony with you.
Antony will refuse to let go off his armor so expect to see the opposite of Boone here.
Perk: Everytime you enter combat 4 legion mongrels will spawn nearby and rush to your help, when combat is over they will disappear. This does not work indoors.

Scrambler
After completing all of Powder Gangers quests Scrambler will say that he has a new found respect to you and wishes to accompany you on your travels.
He is the same as Dead Sea in that he will agree to wear disguises but certain NCR and Legion members can sniff him out.
Perk: With scrambler in your party you get a +30DMG on critical hits to the head and you can get free explosives from him once every other day. Depending on player level the explosives will get better.

Melissa
If you complete every quest for Khans then she will offer to help you out.
Spoiler
I don't remember fully but I think that if all quests are completed then they won't join NCR or Legion so the only way to complete the game with her at your side is independent and house main paths.

Perk: With Melissa you get bonuses to passive skills, medicine, science and survival. Everytime you create something at a work-bench that uses these skills will earn you double the amount, so creating a super stimpack will net you two super stimpacks.

Harland
I don't fully remember but Harland does not believe in Bright Brotherhoods goals, so I don't know if he follows them but anyway, after completing the Come Fly With Me quest you can persuade him into joining you out in the wasteland.
Harland does not believe in neither House's, Legion's or NCR's goals so if you're not going for independent vegas then he will turn on you.
Perk: Traps are high-lighted and you get +40% sneak attack critical damage as well as +4DT if you stand completely still.

Beatrix Russel
What's to say, she says herself that she's bored.
Of course she'd want to get out there and do stuff.
Problem is, she's more experience than you, so she don't want to go around babysitting someone.
So the only way to get her is to be lvl 25 and persuade her into joining you. (She's a very powerful combat companion)
Perk: Too tired to think of one.

Victor.
Dead Sea.
Antony
Scrambler
Melissa

That's great. Victor's one of the obvious ones, but I hadn't thought about the others (you've been playing a fink, haven't you?) -- Melissa's the only one I don't shoot on sight. I love the Great Khans. Jessup might be good one for the early game -- his motivation is obvious. Not sure what Perk he'd give, though.

-Sunny Smiles (I like her)
-Deputy Beagle (he's no longer a deputy anyway)
-Vulpes Inculta (only stands around Caesar's tent, might as well go with you)
-Fantastic (just because he, in fact, is Fantastic)

Jessup
Perk: Due to his great loyalty he gets a bonus whenever the players health drops to 50% or less. (Yknow, in order to save you). Bonus +30% damage, +5DT, +20% running speed, +5% critical chance, +30 crit DMG.

This perk would not affect the player direcly but would affect the companion itself a great deal.

Vexen, I can understand Sunny and Beagle but Sir Inculta is Caesars right hand man, I don't think he's going to leave Caesars side to fiddle about with the PC.
And Fantastic only cares about being lazy and getting paid, no way he'd follow the PC where he might actually have to "do stuff". :P

With Sunny, you get a free dog, too.

Beagle could be funny, kind of a Hudson character.

Bearing in mind the post that followed yours, maybe Vulpes Inculta could be accompanying you to assassinate you at the end -- Caesar uses you, but does he really consider you one of his faithful? I haven't played a Legion Character so I don't know if this is a viable idea.

Man, what would Fantastic's perk be? A minus to Repair? His comments would be funny, though.

Having Vulpes Inculta as your follower would be quite stupid. It's like having Colonel Hsu following you around.

I agree with having Sunny Smiles as a companion. Also with Harland, I thought he was pretty cool. I would want Neil, but convincing him would be akin to the speech required to get Arcade to travel with you. You could probably make an argument that now that Tabitha's dead, there is no need to tell Super Mutants to stay away, and that most of them would handle themselves anyway.

Vulpes= Semi-quest giver
Hsu= pretty important story quests.

I dont see the resemblence? Lore Wise Vulpes is an elite spy yeah, but in game he doesnt do anything to edge the story along.

Moe
If you complete Crazy Crazy Crazy by not killing Tabitha then she will vanish and Moe will be left alone.
If you go up to Moe with 5 pieces of strange meat or human flesh you can tame it to join you in your travels.
NCR members will shoot Moe on sight unless you have a good rep with them.
Other factions will draw guns at it but won't shoot unless you attack someone or Moe attacks someone.
Moe needs to feed on a human or be given human flesh two times a day otherwise he'll leave you and go back to the radioactive crater where he's found.
If you are around friendly humans and you have not given Moe human flesh for a while then he will attack them by instinct.
Perk: You get +15% rad resistance, the option to loot human flesh from fallen foes, and you get ED-E's sensor thingie were you can see the red dots from far far away on the compass.

Yeah but isn't he still the leader of the frumentarii? It just wouldn't feel right having a high ranking Legion member following some recruit.

This, but she's more a scout / recon girl than a chemist.
A Boone for the guy's, a smaller threat level from creatures and npc's when wandering would be my choice of a perk.
Like Animal friend but they're still hostile but less likely to engage if you stay at a distance.

I like the idea of Neil being a companion, and thers no reason he wouldn't be after you complete crazy, crazy, crazy, besides telling other super mutants to go to jacobstown but thats not really important. I don't know what his perk would be though. I think he would be cooler then Lily.

I think the problem with Victor being a companion is that even in hardcoe mode he wouldn't be able to die. His A.I. would just be uploaded to another securitron and there you go, brand new Victor.
