Thievery&Climbing

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 4:51 am

Ye sniffy mate are a thief, crafty in the arts of burglary.. by the alley you stay, prowling after a mid day of pickpocketing, then the boredom comes stealthy, burglarizing the doors of mind - thy mind by the way -, when, suddenly, while ye mate stares drooling at a piece of metal called lockpick, a spark of thievery lights a lampion above your prig head.. "Catburglary!"- ye think in a sneaky way of thinking with exclamation. Yes! This is the lesson that you took from the boring things that plague your world (at least in a psychological level, like this text :snoring: ), and from this you decide to use the same tactics as He, the self proclaimed abstractic-cosmic-entity, your holliness Boredom. Whose tactics consisted of infiltrating a fellow's brain over the last few hours without the dude noticing. However... well... you decide to throw away this brain blabbering concept and put this woody dusty doors of this bourgeoisie on its place. "The best way for a thief to break into someones houses is by the front doors!?"- you say, or rather, whisper, querying rhetorically about the question........ wait...... Rhetorically??? Front doors??? What the flip...?!

That's the daily thoughts of the average thieves in all of the 4 installments of TES. Without mods, the contempt of The Nine Divines by functional windows act as an conservative irrational little b-e-a-ch, and our thief's only means of invasion are front doors, and, maybe, kitchen back doors in the fourth edition of the game... mostly on the first option i would bet. Even if the climbing skill is neither in Morrowind, nor in Oblivion, it wasn't very useful for thievery in the late Daggerfall (i dont remember it in Arena), unless you wanted to spend eternal hours on the roof of some building waiting for the guards pursuers to go away (something that will never happen). All of this reminds me of two mods for thieves made for Oblivion: the first one adds a series of gadgets for this class like an underground shop at the Imperial City that sells rope-arrows to climb things etc... this mod combined with the second one that put locks on most of the windows in Tamriel, that can actually be lockpicked, causing this windows to serve as passage to the inside of a house/tower/castle, made much more sense in my personal experience as a member of the thieves guild in TESIV.

So... How do you think thievery mechanics should be designed in Skyrim?

Anyway, without further ado and reticences, i want you to welcome this poll (that, probably, is not the first one about the theme, but let's reinforce our thoughts  ) "Should climbing ability return in TESV: Skyrim?", reply your opinion and thoughts about that.

EDIT: Added another question to the poll, related with the ability to unlock a door by force.
EDIT2: Added yet another question to the poll, related with thieves arsenal provision.
Thanks and Farewell

It should, but sadly it will most likely not. Hopefully their next big title (probably Fallout 4 or some new iD-Bethesda collaborative work) will have some form of climbing/free-running. A Brink-like system would be nice.

Also, it would not work with the way interiors/exteriors are, unless each window acted like a door, which may decrease performance in some buildings with a lot of windows. You must also realize, a lot of the windows are not openable in the first place: decorated stained glass windows do not open.

Yes, this grappling hook thing is kinda like the rope-arrow that i mentioned as part of a mod, but, as i said - and i'm talking about thievery -, this would be much more useful if you could enter a house by the window of the second floor as an example.

What about bashing doors until they die and unlock? Break into a house by breaking a locked door (if you have enough strenght) seems reasonable to me... would be a passive ability for sure...

I don't know...
But in the other hand, if climbing can be done everywhere, it will have the same faith than levitate...

I see, but climbing should be treated as a passive skill/ability, with some limitations for sure, while levitation should be a high lvl skill/spell that consumes Magicka. I can′t really argue about this levitation thing because i don't know how it will be handled, maybe as a dragon shout...?

I'd like it to work, but I don't know why windows would open, especially in a low-tech northern setting.

Perhaps in some areas, like the exceptionally wealthy homes there could be a window capable of opening.

Climbing would be awesome, with it′s performance depending on your athletics skill (low athletics = you could fall) and at cost of stamina... but very unlikely to be in the game IMO

Not too sure but I really would not care either way, the game seems to work well without it

I wish they'd implement Climbing in a manner similar to Daggerfall, allowing almost any surface to be climbed. I figure every texture could be rough enough to justify a lack of prominent/programmed handholds.

thief's arsenal, breaking through windows, jumping on roofs, and enhanced stealth are all mods that made OB thievery 1000% better

hope they learned this time.

Agreed, i did not take into account the fact that the common windows in Tamriel do not open and just serves as a mourning light source, so... some thief apparatus to break windows without making noise would be sufficient.

I'm just trying to figure out a way to sneak into a building without being by the front door.
It opens another poll possibility: Big YES to Thieves Guild Gadgets Supplier
