Thing I learned today: Give Lydia health potions

Post » Sun Dec 11, 2011 12:49 am

I gave Lydia a stack of health potions. She will use them when she gets low on health. Just thought I would share the info. I didnt realize until an hour ago you could do that.

That's a really good idea. I'll try that with my next companions.

Wow, Thanks for the advice. I never knew that. In fallout they were to dumb to use health items so I thought this be the same way.

She's something else and I mean that in a great way. I just realized that while we were in a Barrow, there was a draugr and it was called Lydia's draugr. I didn't know she could conjure but I just realized that I had her carrying the Staff of Zombies. Fantastic...she can use it!

And about her healing, thanks, I'll give her some when I have extras. Right now I'm using Healing Hands to heal her after every encounter with an enemy. It fits in perfectly with my Battlemage / Healer style.

Why do you guys even use companions?

I find them just getting in my way 100% of the time.

This is great news! Thanks for the tip!

She's such a mystery ... gave me a hard time for slapping her once but never said a word when I took her on a quick shortcut down a waterfall.

I'm 20 hours in and my companion never got in my way. I find them to be very helpful in combat and as pack mules. :spotted owl:

Maybe if theirs a staff that heals she'd definatly use that. I had no idea you could give companions staffs and potions to make them more effective..ugh poor lydia died.

I'm not positive but I don't think she tangles with them...unless someone else has seen it? When they were after me when we were fighting the dragon, she didn't or couldn't fight the giants. They kept getting me until finally I just kept running around the dragon to absorb the soul and then ran down the road.

Err. Lydia isn't the new Adoring Fan. What was she doing close to a large cliff?

Don't kid yourself. This AI isn't brilliant. My Lydia would trigger traps and get stuck in them all the time.

She just walked straight off the cliff during the "Discerning the Transmundane" quest.

Wat. I wouldn't spend potions on lydia at all, she doesn't fight with a brain and she's invulnerable. Lydia will literally sit there and tank 4 high level enemies face to face - she doesn't kite them or use terrain in any way. She drops to the brink of death and falls over, revives in ~10 seconds and starts over.

Companions are a minor distraction for your enemies, not a lot more. They do add some damage, but they won't protect you. If you give lydia potions she'll just do more of the same - stand in front of a high level monster taking heavy hits until she's out of potions, then keel over unconscious. Waste of potions imo.

packmule, cannon folder in combat, no joke, they carry a pretty good bit of stuff AND if your like me, playing a ALMOST pure mage but having him focus on stealh as well then you cant take but a few hits from anyone and you die,

I discovered this myself earlier while playing.to the above poster saying she is invulnerable,I'll have to disagree there, she has died twice on me then having to reload a save.I've heard they can die if the pc is the one to inflict the final blow(s)> idk...I do know at the very least I like having a companion for the extra storage capacity + damage sponge/distraction against mobs etc.

Another idea I was thinking about trying was a courage spell on a companion....I wonder if that would have an effect?
I really wish there was more information on their stats..I want to know if all companions are the same overall or if some are more powerful than others...foes anyone know about that?

When I was in a similar situation, while I was fighting the dragon I saw Lydia attacking a giant. It was the giant that killed me after I got the dragon and when I went back to my last save, things happened differently. The giant had his mammoth herd and joined in with us in fighting the dragon and then just carried on his way and was non-hostile. I found out about the health potions thing on my own. I only gave her a couple and found out that one was gone when I checked back later. I didn't have much to spare though, as some of the tougher opponents can have me using up quite a few myself in the middle of combat.

For one of my other quests I took along the warrior woman from the tavern in Whiterun instead. In the ruins we encountered another woman, a mage it turns out, who joined us in our search. But the mage was a little careless/indiscriminate in where she threw down her fire attacks during fights and hurt the warrior woman. So the warrior started attacking the mage. But neither of them could kill each other. They would just reduce the other to kneeling for a while. Although I thought I was going to have to kill one of them to end the dispute, I used a healing spell on them instead and they returned to being non-hostile to each other after that. I haven't tried healing a follower when they turn hostile on you (from one accidental hit too many), but it may work the same if someone else in that situation didn't want to have to be forced to kill the follower.

Thanks I gave my Lydia some armor and weapons and she equipped them, that was pretty cool but didnt think about giving her hp potions. I later gave her some nice staffs and axes, and she would use them randomly, switching between her huge axe, bow and a smaller axe and staff, spewing fire at the enemy and reanimating the corpses!

Thanks for confirming that. There was a lot going on and Lydia may have done that in my battle too but I missed it because it was so hectic. :) Lydia did die on an accidental hit from me once so now I'm very careful and in close quarters, I just stand back more andr conjure something up to help. Companions have always been one of the best parts of the games since Fallout New Vegas...I just love them nd find their behavior fascinating...like your warrior woman and the mage not getting along.
