Things Bethesda should learn

Post » Sun Jul 24, 2011 6:42 pm

Obsidian not a good company. All there games have failed. Fallout New Vegas was the only game they did right which they took ideas from the past Elderscrolls games. Bethesda needs to go back to their roots and not hug up on another companys balls.

They did not do it right for consoles. I STILL see Geckos Glitching underground.

I just want an interesting world to explore, like in FO3. Whenever you saw a decrepit house off in the distance, there was a chance it held something good. Whenever I saw a church, I knew I was in for a treat - provided I could get past the inhabitants. Every place had something worthwhile and interesting, and there were a lot of places. And I much preferred that I could quickly loot a place (sometimes with no resistance) in 5 minutes with no cell change and still come away with something good to Oblivion's 3-level dungeon dive through a generic setting for generic loot (though I admit FO3's guns and ammo made it easier to make places interesting).

FO3 also had much more interesting unscripted events. I must have spent an hour replaying over and over one I came across - the Enclave had set up a fort, and as I approached it I could see shooting around it. It turned out that a wandering trader and his pet mutie bear, and a pack of wild mutie bears, had come across it at the same time, and a big 3-way fight was going on - totally unscripted.

Please, don't bring in the faction system from NV. I think that may be one of the contributing factors for why I don't like it, though I really have no clue why I despise NV(I've never even been able to complete the MQ)

The faction system actually did exist in FO3, you just didn't get any chances to do much with the relative communities that affected them and would either make them like or hate you.

Things Bethesda should learn from Obsidian : Good ideas and writing don't make a good game if the player character is always stuck in rocks, certain companions just disappear from the game world, and deathclaws underneath the ground meshes can hit you, but you can't hit them.

skyrim will already have some of these things but your crazy to get rid of fast travel for the sake of hard core...idk about you but i simply don't have the time to do that and i find that would be really excessive considering the size of the game. i mean excessive... You would do a single mission and go from one side of the map to the other. probably take u 20-30 minutes to get there becuz of the distractions and fights. trying not to die btw and having to stop to get water, food, sleep, and not freeze to death so that wuld probably add more time. than u get ur objective done move to another part take another 10 minutes. get that done get another drink of water and eat some more. take a nap. than go to the last part of the mission take 15 minutes to get ther eand than a nother 20 minute run back to the guy who gave it to u....heck no. im not doing that. Would be a waste of my time. I got college and wut not to deal with lol.

I didn't even finish NV. It might have been different if I hadn't played F3 before.
Choice & consequence were much better in NV, but the game isn't that open like a Bethesda game, especially when you get restricted to follow the first part of the mainquest down south.
That might be the problem: What do you expect from a game?

If Bethesda is a smart developer (which I believe they are), they will learn from anyone they can. If fact, there's evidence that they do (Bioshock's developers, Apple, etc.) Obsidian's not the only people they can draw inspiration from. This thread should be more about "what inspiration Bethesda can draw from other companies", not just one company who's success pales in comparison to Bethesda's. That way, other posters could contribute other companies outside of Obsidian to this thread.

This, right here. People who are so concerned about fast travel don't understand that most gamers have lives outside of their console/PC. This is why fast-travel exists.

I think you're right, there are some things to learn from Obsidian's "work" :
- No invisible walls (except at the end of the map)
- Don't force people to follow the main quest by putting uber creatures a level 1 character can't defeat on every road but the one that leads to the main quest.
- Leave access to the whole map. At least 1/3 can't be explored... quite a shame for an "open" world.

That beeing said, the OP pointed out some good ideas added by Obsidian. The idea of a hardcoe mode is interesting, but needs to be improved. The drink/eat/sleep thing becomes tedious real fast.

Warring factions. Although this will most likely not be in Skyrim, it would be nice to have factions that hated one another that you had to choose to be a part of. In New Vegas there came a time where you had to choose a side and there were consequences for doing so. We all know that this won't happen in the main quest but it seems entirely possible as side quests. Maybe a DLC could add some elements of this after the game is released.

Yah sure Skyrim has no factions which fight each other.

Did you even watch the Teaser Trailer? Gosh, i hate it when people act so stupid

as along as its not where you couldn't wear certain armor like NV, when you wear legion armor and walk in a ncr base they attack you, it made since but i didn't like that i couldn't wear that armor. so if they don't do it like NV i will be happy to have factions fighting

To the OP, I agree with you on point two, and I think Smithing may accomplish that. Point one if optional could be done but I think we would've heard about a hardcoe mode by now so I don't see it happening in Skyrim.

It seems that any time a post is made about features in Fallout: New Vegas or Fallout 3 (even though that was made by Bethesda) it instantly garners flame throwers and negative comments. I personally love both game and without question, enjoy The Elder Scrolls more. However, there are numerous things features that were in Fallout: New Vegas that should be incorporated into Skyrim, whether we like to admit it or not.

The first one is what I think is the most obvious and something that seems to have a new thread on these forums every other day. hardcoe mode. We could call it survival mode or whatever term you want to use, but it needs to be there. As an option. Plain and simple. This alone adds so much immersion to the game. I think the hardcoe mode for Skyrim should go as far as eliminating the use of fast travel as well. Either way, there needs to be an option to turn on mandatory eating, drinking and sleeping in Skyrim.

The second thing is something that didn't get much attention but was a wonderful addition. Skyrim needs disguises. Just like in New Vegas, if an enemy got too close to you they should be able to tell. But we should be able to put on imperial armor or whatever it may be in Skyrim and walk around palaces without being questioned. This would add a whole new element to the game and greatly benefit sneak characters.

Custom and hand-made weapons. I loved finding all the parts to make custom weapons in Fallout. It gave the custom weapons that feeling of uniqueness that other weapons did not have. It was also nice to be able to break down ammunition in New Vegas and create our own. There should be ways to break down arrows or swords and add your own blade, handle or arrow tip. This would again, add a huge, new element to the game.

There are probably more that I'm not thinking about but I feel like these would benefit the game tremendously. Any other Fallout players that have ideas feel free to include them, I'd like to hear what you guys think.

I agree with custom weapons actually looking custom that that's besides the fact that your bullet points have already been talked over multiple times since last years announcements.

Also while we're on Bethesda: Many RPG elements Fallout shares with TES were ripped out in Fallout 3 even though they existed in Oblivion.

You can pretty much outrun cazadores, and pop in a stim and some antivenom in case you get hit. Or run from Goodsprings via Sloan and Hidden Valley to Novac. To be honest I rather liked the feature that there are locations which are rather hard.

I recall reading something about "breaking down" enchanted items to learn their enchantments and be able to subsequently enchant other weapons with them. Maybe they will implement the ability to break down weapons/armor to their base components as well?

I suppose it depends on how thorough the crafting system actually is. I've not heard of anything more than the 14 or so "ores" the player can craft from, though I'd imagine there be more materials than only those ores in the system (Leather, for example).

Because there is no daedric realm full of uneaten, well-cooked steaks from which to summon them.

Actually, I'm quite sure that cheese can be summoned from Sheogorath's realm.

Neverwinter Nights. How could you possibly forget those horrible excuses for games? :P

Didn't Obsidian develop NW2? Because I'm pretty sure Neverwinter Nights 1 was made by BioWare, and so was the original KotOR, as a matter of fact

i agree with the hardcoe part OP,

but you do know there are disguises in oblivion right? if you play shivering isles again and dress up as a zealot you can walk right through their caves/bases and as long as they don't get to close you will be fine

A hardcoe mode would mean taking out alot of key mechanics. for one you would need to drink water to stop from dying of thirst but when was the last time anyone had a drink of cold water that had no special effect in an elder scrolls game.second food. every single piece of anything consumable would have some sort of side effect they would have to take those side effects out to make food just bring your health up meaning alchemy would be that much less important.if a hardcoe mode would be in an elderscrolls game bethesda would probably have to take some things out to make it balanced. like take restoration for example why eat anything to bring up your health when you can have a spell that does it better you see what I mean.I don't think there is anyway to put in a hardcoe mode without taking things out.

hardcoe mode, maybe. But I don't care much one way or the other.

Like the Grey Fox's cowl?

Usually when there is a threat on the very existence on the entire world, different guilds and groups come together to defeat that threat and there is no time and place for warring factions. They must stand together or stand apart. Other than a few smaller disagreements. I really don't find warring factions always needed in every single game. While I understand this brings enjoyment to some, I'm fine with guilds existing side by side in peace or against the forces which may destroy them all.
