Things We Have Learned From TES IV: Oblivion

Post » Sat Oct 03, 2009 9:17 pm

Well, I would think that obese people in the medieval ages were reserved to nobility or the rich. People in the medieval ages were a lot more active and had to ration their food more, out of necessity. That and Beth was probably too lazy to make various different types of body styles. I hear FO3 is a little better in that department?

Then again on Oblivion you can kill 1 bandit and get thousands of coins worth. In menieval you would have to work for your money. :)

No idea when games such as oblivion are supposed to be set. If any time.

Mods can, in fact, make a game worth more than you ever thought it could be.

It's hard to say. It seems Bethesda (like many RPG-makers) have borrowed elements which range from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance.

http://inventors.about.com/od/timelines/a/MiddleAges.htm

The gun was invented in the 13th century, for instance, according to that page. Some RPGs I've played have guns, and some don't. TES doesn't, and I hope it never will...I'd much prefer crossbows in the next game. :)

If we look at some of the clothes people wear, however (especially noble-types) Bethesda has borrowed some designs which look more as if they're from the 16th or 17th century. Ayleid Ruins are unique to Tamriel, but the forts in Oblivion look as though they were made during one Age, which is why they're all so similar in design. I'm not about to speculate what age this would correspond to on Earth, though. Don't know enough about architecture from those times.

Anyways, I realize Tamriel is on another planet, so all the rules could be different from Earth.

Dang that went way off-topic...

The elf I travel with uses an enchanted daedric bow and (currently) elven arrows. With a prep spell to bust his poison immunity and the right poison, she can kill a storm atronach with one shot. Even less trouble to kill a brown bear with one shot. She doesn't do melee at all and has low hit points, so she HAS to know how to kill quickly and efficiently with a bow - and she does (normal difficulty, level 20). It most certainly can be done. Some of the pieces that help are detect life, sneak, poisons, drain speed, weakness to poison, agility, marksman, armorer (125% repair). ;)

Deer survive longer than armed warriors outside cities.

The Imperial Legion is NOT prepared for Will-O-The-Wisps.

Another thing I learned..

There is a travelling Orchestra following you around. They usually play soft music, but if they spot danger from afar,
the song they play changes into something harder. :violin:

It's possible to outrun a deer on foot.

Weapons do more damage if your targets don't see you when you use them (unless you're using two-handed blades or blunts).

If you're injured or ill, you just need to pray at a chapel or drink a potion or two (or three). No need to go to a doctor.

The chests in Tamriel are made by Timelords: They are bigger on the inside.

It's possible to get the crap beaten out of us, but wait around for just one hour, and everything will be okay again.

Related to that, shopkeepers KNOW what items you have stolen, but see no reason to inform the guards about them. Of course the guards know too as they confiscate them if you get arrested, yet possessing stolen items is not a reason enough to get arrested.

I guess guards and shopkeepers see the red hand icon too...

Duh, isn't it easy enough for them to see the red hand over the item? haha!

Yea I know. People who live in the magical world of TES games must have an ultra-good sense of smell or something. Speaking of which, what the heck would it SMELL like to be a conjurer?

Another thing I've learned in Oblivion. People never sleep under blankets. And they wear ALL their clothes when they sleep. If one NPC sleeps next to another, they always 'spoon'. ewwwwww!

What have I learned from TES:IV Oblivion?
I learned that just because a game is new and shinier, that doesn't mean it's better.
