Things in New Vegas that make you fume

Post » Sat Jan 23, 2010 1:34 am

@hooligantuan: A+ !!

Lack of a proper home base, with the following

Workbench and reloading bench INSIDE
Campfire (or hotplate) INSIDE
Ability to send companions there.
Owned bed.
Clean water.
A single loading screen post-fast-travel.
At least 2-3 storage bins.

If you don't wanna give us that from the start, let us build it up later. Make each item cost ~10k caps or more, to help spend the crazy amounts we have. Need something to blow these 37 gold bars on.

I completely agree, and would also add to your list - a working radio or two. It really annoys me that in both Novac and the Lucky 38 the radios get nothing but static.

Vault 34 in general pisses me off, seriously I was in that thing for probably a good three hours, dying from rad poisoning who knows how many times before I finally gave up and looked up a walk through on youtube.

I kind of like Vault 34. I mean at first it was like [censored] when is it gonna end?!?!? But now i just run through and have a blast trying not to die from radiation, bashing in little wrinkly old ghoul faces in with my Oh! Baby, screaming like Arnold the whole way. It's actually really amusing and makes me laugh my ass off after I'm done.

Good call on the radio. One of the minor things I miss from FO3. Going home and hearing, "This is Three-Dog. Aaoooooo!"

My theory on Blind Deathclaws is that its a reference to shooting the deathclaws in the eyes in the originals game. Best way to kill them is shooting them in the eyes. So these blind deathclaws could be a nod to that lost ability.

The Strip is also ridiculously underpopulated. It doesn't feel like a thriving, politically turbulent bastion of post-apocalyptic civilization. It feels like a place in its death throes.

You know what's really weird?

If you go into the sewers in New Vegas, you will bump into like a dozen wandering nobody NPCs serving absolutely no purpose other than bumbling around the sewers and looking like they live there. BRING THESE PEOPLE TO THE STREETS! New Vegas is a GHOST TOWN.

They really need to do a comprehensive update patch that addresses some of this crap. Game is good, don't get me wrong, but it's in the shadow of the experience it very nearly was. And, sadly, it's well behind Fallout 3 in a number of ways, none of which is ATMOSPHERE. The Mojave is an excellent looking place with gorgeous (albeit post-apocalyptic) vistas and hills. But it doesn't feel epic. It doesn't feel alive. It doesn't feel like there's a 3-way power struggle.

And I didn't like Dead Money. Too much bumbling around in fog with exploding slave collars, not enough in the super-fabulous casino, exterior structures frequently made no sense (I'm talking rooms that, were it not for the hole in the wall I just went through, would have been SEALED SHUT when they were made, and/or not have a staircase to even get to them), and all the exterior areas looked the same. I mean, would it have really been too difficult to have some different texture assets to help differentiate the areas better? PLUS, I never got any cool Ghost People gear - it was all dumb spears and bear-trap fists. So not liking Dead Money is really resonating with me, because I loved EVERY Fallout3 DLC item.

I get so nerd-ragey about this because, man, I love these Fallout games. I'm invested. Its fiction is engaging and plausible enough. But the devil is in the details.

Bugs and freezing
Invisible walls
Explosives, Survival being useless
Lack of Caesar's Legion Quests
EW inferior to Guns
Underwhelming amount of weapon mods and unique weapons
Small map
Bad fast travel points
No Caesar's Legion/Securitron/Great Khan followers (other factions apply here, too)

Don't mean to turn this into a FO3 vs. NV thread, so I hope this doesn't set off comparisons...

But it just so happens I miss exploring and random events. I want better locations and more AI activity. The reason being that yes this game has tons of gameplay (four different paths to choose, essentially), but then things stop there. What do you do once you've served House, Kimball, and Caesar, and told all three to jump off a cliff? I wish exploring felt more interesting and that some events were random; the randomness helps the game feel alive and the locations make the game memorable. I remember walking by Ranger Station Charlie once and noticing the Legion spying on them from a hilltop. Even events as small as that help the game feel more alive. Same goes for locations: for instance the Scavenger's Platform is a good location. It's something you see off in the distance that immediately strikes you with curiousity, and before you know it you're post-phoning your quest to see what that place is all about. Exploring needs to involve...enticing locations. Just something that sparks your attention: doesn't even have to have loot or be meaningful, just as long as it gets your interest and feels unique. And those locations that DO have loot? Those can make your day. NV has loot and locations, but the problem is the size of them. It only takes 5 minutes tops to clear a location. It just gives the feel that lots of the locations are literally meant as map markers for fast travel rather than destinations. Some of the locations are literally comparable with making a location called "Yellow rock," where the location is nothing but an odd yellow rock that serves no purpose.

EDIT: And actually the more I think about it, maybe I'm also complaining about the atmosphere. New Vegas doesn't feel as alive as other games like it, and that's just because of simple things like the Strip being underpopulated. Without people on the Strip randomly interacting or walking all about, it doesn't feel like a world; it feels like a game.

Ohh Yes! I have to subscribe to that. The Sewers. First time around there made me think: why? Such a vast environment,
so many 'lively' people idling around... Why? Why in heaven just a short, very minor and unimportant, side quest refers to there?
And I had the same feeling in Westside and North Vegas. Interesting places with very little to do as opposed to Freeside wich is
quite well done and fun to mess with.

And I reclutantly have to agree with those saying that there's very little involvement with the Legion side. I'm not fond of them but they
do deserve to have a bigger part in the game beside becoming the only 'cave fungus' source available.

You want us to talk about things in the game that we don't like, but we can't talk about exploring? You can treat me like a troll if you want, but that's what I don't like. This game has nothing compared to Fallout 3. It has more map markers, but most of them are really useless. Other than that, I don't have a problem with the game. I like what Obsidian added, (new guns, faction rep, ironsights, etc.) but I wish Bethesda would have developed it. Nobody can beat Bethesda at making open worlds.

I don't really like survival or hardcoe either. Survival is useless, even with hardcoe. hardcoe just seems like a nuisance.

I know this is a thread for complaints, but I do want to add one good thing. I love the deathclaws in this game. They really seem like the baddest things on the planet. Plus, I love the variety. The alpha's and mothers are awesome.

Well, there "was" an exploration thread open just a couple of minutes ago you could always start a #2 of that one and discuss the exploration pro's and con's if you want to.

Yeah. In fact, the lack of an option to shoot in the crotch or eyes is annoying in general. They should bring that back in the future.

Would be nice for VATS to have more unarmed options as well.
Might make it worth a damn for Unarmed characters.

Why don't we combine these two things?

Just imagine it - an unarmed VATS attack to the crotch.

Was disapointed with this a bit. It has alot more potential then what it has now. I mean it has a very small society, some ghouls, rats and some fiends.... Not much to do down there but get irradiated and kill small stuff

I missed the badass death animations from the amazing originals.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMLbEAxjzj8 These make Bethesda's animations look tame.

I don't want to repeat the same gripes that I agree with so just a couple of my main pet peeves

I took out Benny And Mr. House but I can't get Benny's half of the Top's and I can't open the Lucky 38

Never saw the dance routine that was in the trailer.( a lot of time wasted sitting in front of empty stages)
OK three: Incorrect weapon damage. When I can shoot you point blank in the face with a shot gun slug and you kill me, but I come back and kill you with a BB gun in three shots to the knee?

When Mr. House told me to go wipe out the Brotherhood and I (who had a vested though very one-sided interest in keeping them around for a while) suggested a diplomatic solution and he said: "No."

Don't get me wrong - I am not a BoS fan. I just wasn't ready to be killing them yet. The important thing here is that I suggested something to Mr. House and he snubbed me, trying to force my hand. Fuming is exactly the word I would use to describe how I felt. Naturally, I felt much better when I disconnected him in an extravagantly violent way.

The term is "critical existence failure." It happens a lot in video games. You can get dropped from 100% to 1% health in one huge hit, and your character doesn't even flinch. But the next bee-sting that hits for 1 point will kill you.

The thing that makes me fume the most about this : fallout has a system in place to make this much better (maybe not quite perfect, but better) Limb Crippling. A crippled leg should be 10x worse than it is right now. Make the player move at encumbered pace, and slowly lose hp (bleeding) until the crippled leg is fixed.

Likewise with arms. Crippled arms could reduce your encumbrance by 25% (hard to carry things with broken arms) in addition to the aiming penalties.

And the head. That's gotta be the lamest penalty ever. Sure, the blurry screen is annoying, but I'm fairly certain getting your noggin crippled would have way more effect. If nothing else, crippled head should instantly drop fatigue to 0, like boxing gloves or the cattle prod.

Oh, and these should be for both player and NPC. If I cripple my opponents head, that fool needs to fall down.

Indeed low-key.
I think that something that has gotten lost in transision from Tabletop to digital.
Even if critical existence failure still exist in table top (I GM a Fallout simple, and one guy gets headshoted with 12. ga and he has 1 hp, one stimp and he's almost back to full hp =P)

Before I start off the topic. This is NOT a thread to go 'I HATED THIS GAME' or to complain about the bugs or whatever. This is more about 'Things that happen' in the game world. If you do post anything like 'THIS GAME svckS' or 'NO EXPLORING' I'll treat it as trolling and ignore it.

As for me. I HATE those damn slot machines. Nothing makes me angrier than 7-7- Then the last 7 didnt get marked in the position by a half a tick. Those slot machines are the trolls of New Vegas e_e

Didn't read the whole thread just the OP but I LOVE slot machines. If you have a good luck score (which you should and shame on you if you don't) then they are incredible. I finally hit the 32k chips jackpot the other day in The Tops. So you can do the normal 10 or 15k caps for most casinos or you can end up winning 32k. My first jackpot on the slots was at the Atomic Wrangler with 5k chips already won and I got the 16k jackpot. So instead of 10k caps I walked away with 21k.

Go go one armed bandit!
