Things spotted in the new low-quality footage

Post » Tue Aug 30, 2011 3:40 am

So I dont think I can post the link, :nono: we warn for giving directions to find it, the same as supplying the link

Anyways, in this video you get a glimpse of several people at PAX playing the game, I wanted to discuss some of what was seen. Its low quality, but its exciting nonetheless.

-saw swimming...looks like Oblivion.
-someone fighting a giant again
-someone fighting with two other guys on a mountain...but I noticed he was doing a lot of backpeddaling (wasnt that supposed to be harder?).
-more scenes of the tundra
-a fiew people playing in third-person

It appears there are multiple videos, but they may be removed soon.

Backpedaling is running backwards, right?
Why should running backwards be removed?

Well, remember how they said they wanted to make it less like Oblivion where you run forward and backward to avoid people's swords.

Wasn't expecting anything else, although I would of liked to see some swimming animations.
-someone fighting a giant again

Dem Giants. :shifty:
-someone fighting with two other guys on a mountain...but I noticed he was doing a lot of backpeddaling (wasnt that supposed to be out?).

Back-pedalling is much more slower then running forward, getting rid of back-pedalling would be stupid, they have just slowed it down so it isn't a big combat choice aka. Oblivion.

It adds tactical options. Instead of getting to just hit and run, you have to time blocks, move to the sides and generally fight much more viscerally to succeed in fights. Just a design choice based on how Bethesda saw people play the game.

Swimming looks much better than Oblivion. The Tundra looked beautiful too. The colors kind of looked like the Fall Forest, but it's hard to tell because of the quality.

backpedaling doesnt mean 'running backwards'
it means 'running backwards to avoid all enemy attacks', which they said they prevent with making running backwards slower.
Meh, I didnt beckpedal in Oblivion, and I wont backpedal in Skyrim. Im not ruining my fun

No, it wasn't intended to be "harder." They slowed it down and made it so you can't backpedal and pull back on a bow string. The issue was backpedaling while unloading arrows at people which is no longer a viable option.

I don't really agree with your sentiments, and nothing will bring down my excitement for the game... :foodndrink:

Ok, finally I found a suitable thread to put this in. To add to the swimming: The animations look almost identical to Oblivion's in that the character strokes the same way, at the same pace. There also seems to be the same awkward movements in where the animation doesn't match the timing. It isn't looking that great and the added ripples don't add much. When the player tries to go underwater, they just slunk down really fast ie TESIV. The camera also gets obstructed throughout.

And I'll just add madmole's description of things they saw because he/she had the last post on my thread before it got locked and I feel bad.

Thanks guys for sending me video searching.... I found a few new gems!

I saw a guy hanging out in Riverwood town talking to the bard from the screenshot. He was telling the player to come hear him play at the Sleeping Giant Inn, and then goes on about other stuff, dragons and then accepts a quest. Chat seems a lot more in depth than in Oblivion for sure. Kids running around, and a chicken is walking around in the town! It looked really natural too. The whole town is just beaming with life and stuff. Seems so much more realistic than in Oblivion where the towns felt like your in a toilet bowl container. Not one animal in the town. I guess it had sheep at Skingrad and the typical horse stable... but Skryim seems to have dogs and kids and chickens and lord knows what else... it's just packed with stuff. So when they say there is a lot more content, it's quite obvious! Awesome I'm so pumped for 11-11.

I also so an Argonian setting stuff on fire. His hands look really cool. He goes down by the water and I'm blown away at the view. Water looks so natural compared to Oblivion. It's like its flowing naturally with little waves and stuff, where in Oblivion its more of a an odd looking swelling. And I thought Oblivion's water was pretty good... but Skyrim's water makes you want to dive in or just relax and stare at it.. Then he kills a fox with fire. The whole thing is impressive. He shows the map too, it looks pretty nice really.

No. The issue was being able to avoid all damage when backpedaling. Ranged attacks (bows or spells, mostly spells) made it even worse. Even in the Oblivion arena, where enemies ran ridiculously fast, you could still just run circles around the arena to take no damage.

Oblivion AI had a lot of problems hitting a moving target.

Skills appear to start at rank 15. Orcs appear to get a +5 bonus to One-Handed, Two-Handed, Block, Smithing and Enchant, and a +10 skill bonus to Heavy Armour.

sheidl spells look pretty epic. it is an effect u have to hold down to make a big blue aura oval infront of your character. it is directional so u have to point it in the direction you want to block and hold it down. an npc using it killed a player somehow so it must deal damage aswell somehow. it also seems to have like a little health bar or something aswell

There's another video "hanging around" of an argonian flaming skeletons and attacking what appears to be either a necromancer or a robed vampire. Also, he dies and it is revealed that he doesn't have beast legs in Skyrim, thus I'm assuming khajiits don't either. I think that was already confirmed, though, I'm not entirely sure...
