There's a mod to fix that. It's called the unofficial brain patch.

  • Always play as a female
  • Always collect alchemical ingredients and brew potions, even if you don't perk the Alchemy skill
  • Never walk down the middle of a passage, that's where the pressure plates are usually located.
  • Never stand directly in front of a treasure chest when you open it, that's usually the targeted area for traps.
  • Double check your spells, active power/shout, and apparel before entering melee so there are no surprises when you arm yourself. I hate arming only to see dual healing spells at the ready.
  • Don't be shy about running away to survive (I used to fight to the death rather than retreat).
  • Drink the appropriate potions to pump up your health/magicka/stamina/insert_fortify_skill_here before entering melee.
  • Poison melee weapons.
  • Optionally: save so you don't have to do this all over.

It's hard. It took me a long time to break the habit, but I'm finally at the point where my non-alchemists don't try to get every ingredient in sight. It still takes me a few minutes at the beginning of a new character to remember to gather them or not, but then I'm fine.

As for things I always do...

These days all of my characters use a conjurable horse mod even if they don't otherwise use magic.

I use My Home is Your Home, but I never have more people than beds in the house.

I always organize my items, clothing, etc when I move into a house.

All of my characters cook and bake. Since Heathfire, I won't live in a house without an oven, even if I have to use the console to put one in.

Always eat, sleep and bathe.

Always do at least Dragon RIsing, even for my non-DB characters, because I like having dragons in the game.
