Things you learned today.

I've learned that if the sky is cloudy and you see clouds at different heights moving in different directions, get inside.

I've also learned http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/816/why-do-wet-things-look-darker-than-dry-things.

I've also learned that http://www.egscomics.com/?date=2002-01-21 is definitely the weirdest web comic I've ever come across.

Humans are creatures of habit.

Well, I didn't learn that today, more like I verified it.

I learned that the best way to clean up is to just sort all your junk into nicely arranged piles, then at least at looks like you meant for things to be that way.

I learned what Bitcoins are, and am in the process of making some moolah thanks to CUDA. (I'm still not quite sure why bitcoins have value though...)

I learned that spray on deodorant + crotch = bad idea.

Trying to shower with a messed up ankle is very painful.

I Wikipedia'd bitcoin and I've gotta say that I have no idea what to say. As far as I've gathered, it's supposed to be some sort of global virtual currency or something like that? Interesting.

bitcoins are the ultimate fiat currency: they are valued because they allow transactions, which take place because they exist, and they come into existence by helping make transactions, which is what gives them value.

Well don't all currencies basically work that way? I mean, all currencies' values are pretty much circular.

Most fiat currencies have value because someone says it should, rather than because of the system itself.

Today I learned that Veeno changed his avatar to something that's almost, but not quite, the same.

I learned that spray on deodorant + crotch = bad idea.

:flamethrower:

On a more serious note, today I learned that Hamlet inspired The Lion King. This was not due to my lack of knowledge on Shakespeare, but rather because I've never watch The Lion King in its entirety.

I learned that going outside in a thunderstorm with a shaved/bald head might be a bad idea. Since you won't be able to feel any of your hairs raise, you won't know that you're about to be struck by lightning until it's too late.

I learned that it's not a good idea to leave your car sitting still for too long. Otherwise, a mouse will crawl into the ventilator and die, and really stink it up when you turn the fan and AC on. And getting it out can be a real pain in the ass.

I learned that in this schizophrenic weather, which starts out chilly, then becomes warm, then becomes cold and rainy, then warm, that it's best to wear shorts under your jeans. That way, you can take them off at any time things become too hot.

Well, even if you know ahead of time, you'd still get hit (right?).

No. You'd just have to get near something which is more likely to get hit by a lightning (e.g. a lightning rod on a tall building), provided you have enough time. But I'm not sure if this "your hair raises before you get hit by a lightning" thing is true in the first place.

Well people who use bitcoins are someones and they say that bitcoins should have value.

But the value is fixed (which is the appeal of the system) no one can cause inflation because bitcoins are both the cause and the result of the system, unlike other fiat currencies. If no one used bitcoins there would be no bitcoins to have no value, whereas other currencies would exist and suffer from horrible inflation if people didn't use them. THat's what makes it a perfect fiat currency, as it is an entirely enclosed system. Normal fiat currencies can see increases/decreases in production at the whim of those who say it should be valuable.

I don't understand what it means that the value of bitcoins is "fixed". Does that mean that, if I wanted to sell something and it to be paid for with bitcoins, I couldn't set the price to whatever I want it to be?

Oh really? Just because the lack of a central administration makes it impossible to intentionally induce inflation doesn't mean that it can't happen. If inflation was impossible, that means that I wouldn't be able to adjust the price in bitcoins of my product based on demand, which is obviously not true. Hence, it is possible that the average price in bitcoins of everything which can be purchased by bitcoins rises, which means inflation.
