5 Things You Like and Dislike -- Fallout 4

Post » Sat Mar 05, 2016 12:08 am

I thought this would be a neat little thread regarding what we feel are Fallout 4's most impressive and least impressive elements. I was going to add a poll, but maybe next time.

5 Things I like

  • Environment and World Detail

  • Settlement Building

  • Weapon Crafting

  • Combat

  • Layered Armor

5 Things I Think Need Improvement

  • Dialog

  • Quest Design

  • Character Depth

  • Dialog Wheel

  • Optimization for PC

So I would like to see from the community what they think, and then maybe I'll create another topic with a poll summarizing the most requested improvements and most liked features.

I was actually planning on changing super mutant suiciders to about 1/4 the size when the GECK comes out for my own amusemant, so not quite no dwarfs.

5 Things I like:

  • All the small details that bring the world to life (the sound of a bell on a buoy for instance or the changing weather)

  • Settlements!!!

  • Pre-war scenes and entries that tell a story of how people coped during and after the bombs fell

  • The companions and their stories. I think they are well crafted this time around and show some depth

  • Exploration factor - so many locations to discover. I especially like the small, unmarked locations.

5 Things I dis-like:

  • There is no peaceful resolution at the end

  • You are constantly in combat. Gunners for instance shouldn't shoot you on sight. They should give you a warning first. Or Combat Zone should have been a location where you could actually bet on fights (same with the race track).

  • End Slide commentary

  • My character already has a back story (although, I've learned to live with it by now lol)

  • Not seeing the full dialogue options. A lot of times, the words that Beth selected to represent a reply are very mis-leading.

Like:

1) Weapon Customization. Being able to change a weapon to whatever I want has been awesome.

2) Settlement building. Sure sometimes it's a little tedious but I enjoyed creating my own fortresses.

3) Rare ammo being available in stores. In fallout 3 if you ran out of mini nukes you don't get any more.

4) Artillery grenades. One explosion is awesome, 6 is just overkill.

5) Vertibirds. When I'm not in them it's really funny to shoot at them. I hit a knight in the fusion core only for them to fall out and shortly have their core detonate. When I am in them I have a few tricks that are really unpleasant for those against me.

Dislike:

1) Marcy Long. "Do I look like I want to chitchat?" You walked up to me for crying out loud.

2) Mole rats. They pose no threat but I have to wait for them to pop out of the ground before shooting their head off.

3) Enemies spawning in settlements. Being able to bypass every security measure I put into place is a little frustrating.

4) Raiders with mini nukes. That's a little annoying when I go everywhere after a single hit. At least there's only a few pre set locations with that.

5) When an enemy gets a hold of a powerful legendary. I almost got killed because someone had a staggering flamer.

I share your likes, OP.

Dislikes -

*Dialogue

*New leveling system

*Lack of Slavery and Slavers

*Legendary enemies - Morphing InTo some stronger variant in mid-combat is just silly

*Lack of meaningful choice and consquence.

I have a few other likes such as the companions and their dialogue. However, I have MANY more dislikes. I will just leave it at 5 though.

  • Overall performance, and the changes made to the engine

  • Improved shooting mechanics, to a extent. Power armor is also very nice

  • Animations, hence more interesting enemies/monsters

  • Environments are sort of nice

  • Building/crafting mechanics are nice addition, the variety of items could be better tough

Dislike

  • Karma system is gone

  • Story is absolutely horrible. I have zero interest for all that sentimental nonsense

  • Survival difficulty is a bad joke

  • Nothing really matters, no real consequences

  • Overall feels like a good platform for a solid game, except the game isn't there...yet

Preach.

Likes:

  • Weapon and Armor mods

  • The character of the surrounding world (lightning flashes, rain on the PA, radiation storms)

  • Main quest

  • Voiced protagonist (yeah, I know)

  • BoS Entrance

Dislikes:

  • Small number of orgainzed settlements, which leads me to...

  • Quantity of unique quests

  • Variety of music on all channels (most notable on DC radio, but it's across the board)

  • Mutual exclusivity of factions (good for RP purposes, bad if you're a completionist like me)

  • The lack of substantial post-MQ quests within a chosen faction

Oh, I'll add another like - The Raider appearance and clothing. I loved how raiders looked in FO3 and they look sick in this title too.

However, their combat dialogue is not as interesting and entertaining. The raiders in FO3 were hilarious -"Someone call a doctor, we got us a bleeder..hahaha" or "Should have stayed in bed today hero".

Choices and consequences along with dialog options seems to be an important feature missing from Fallout 4. It's good to know it's not just me lol.

Off the top of my head...

Dislike:

  • Dialogue and choices/consequence (or lack thereof.)

  • Too Combat focused (no peaceful/alternate resolutions to m/any quests.)

  • Lack of pre-established Towns/Settlements

  • Weapon variety (Crafting system is awesome, but we need more base models.)

  • Legendary system (I don't dig most of the magically enchanted weapons, it could have been implemented better even as special bullets. This could have led to varying weapon use instead of always using the best gun (once you get one, which doesn't take too long) since it lasts forever. A degradation system could have improved this too as that would add a bit of strategy to combat and what weapon we want to use at certain times because of a limitation.)

Like:

  • Power Armor system

  • Environment and world-design

  • Technical advances (shaders, weather, animations, etc.)

  • Combat

  • Weapon/Armor customization & layered armor

I could name more than 5, for both categories, but that's the main stuff I think.

Yeah, it's as clear as daylight what they did. They "played it safe" so to speak. But on the process of doing so, they took away something that made the previous games (especially NV) so enjoyable in the first place. Experimenting with the games, and sometimes breaking the games in the process was a major part of the fun Fallout 3 & NV had to offer. In Fallout 4, you can't be "evil" for example, because there is no consequences. One can't break the game, because the story characters (and many less so), as far as i know are essential. It's like the game is forcing the horrible story down on the players throat, whether one likes it or not. Also the factions feel like a necessary evil, just to be able to continue the absolutely horrib..amazing main story, especially when compared to the choices one had in FO3 & NV.

Overall it feels like it's a solid foundation for a Fallout game, but it's missing all the content of such game. No matter where or how you look at it, you get the feeling there is something missing. I'm really hoping the DLC proves to be good, no pressure :)

Likes: Drastically improved gunplay, "verticality", settlement building/decorating (despite its wonkiness), humor, exploring

Dislikes: Clunky soul-less guns, KILL-LOOT-RETURN, boring melee as usual from Bethesda, overly simplified and arbitrary perk/attributes leveling, no really creepy vaults like FO3 and FONV

Seems many of my gripes and likes have already been stated so I'll just touch a little bit on one gripe. Somebody mentioned it already but the ending slides. I personally felt the narration with the slides covering so many more things you did than just the main quest really added to the storytelling. Honestly I still haven't finished the main quest because as soon as I found out about the end I lost my interest in seeing things through to the end. Call me crazy. :ahhh:

Yeah, the combat-centric focus is a major flaw in FO4. Some interior levels in the main quest just feel like repitious grinds through numerous generic enemies.

The lack of alternative solutions is very dissappointing. The combat zone is a great example of this

+ Power Armor

+ Character system, leveling and the perk chart

+ Main storyline

+ Crafting

+ Quick-loot (!)

- NPCs blocking doorways

- Lack of diversity among romance options

- Moments in main storyline where pacing felt strange

- Weird balance in apparel, with layered armor, under-apparel, and inconsistent ballistic weave

- Beginning and ending cinematics are really forgettable

1. World Details

2. Crafting

3. Combat

4. U.S.S Constitution

5. Notes/Computers with Pre-War Details

Dislikes:

1. Conversation Depth - Yes/Yes/No/Explain (Need I really say more?)

2. World Depth - While large and detailed, I felt I had very little impact on it.

3. Perk Depth (See a trend forming?) - Save for a few perks that added interesting combat abilities, most of the perks felt like they just added X% to Y.

4. Settlement Depth - Settlers were bland and were only good for water and buying shotgun shells.

5. Character Depth - I could not bring myself to care about anyone I encountered as they felt shallow and bland.
