Things you wish you knew sooner

After chopping a lot of firewood, drop it out of your inventory and carry it over with the grab command instead of being forced to walk slowly. I was amazed how many people didn't try this.....

Great thread. I haven't started playing yet, so this topic helps a lot. (My new computer should've arrived five-six days ago :( Waiting...)

Agreed. Maybe the best thread on the forum right now.

Things I'd wish I'd known sooner?

- you can sprint by pressing the ALT button. (Yeah, I got cut to pieces by those swinging traps in Bleak Fall Barrows).

- you actually mine for ore.

- those heavy dwemer parts can be melted down. Who knew?

- improving steel weapons (need the first smithing perk) before level 5 is the difference between life and death in any number of situations.

PC: Press R to learn a new shout if you have a dragon soul. A lot of my friends missed that some how.
Also learn the shouts that will be useful to you first, then pick up the extra ones.

lol i just now figured out how to hotkey after 150 hours in the game because of this thread.

And after playing for over 60 hours i finally figured out that you can sprint in the game..

what [censored] puts sprint as the ALT key? the key right next to the "[censored] me over by bringing me to desktop... key"

hur dur

also you can increase the merchants gold supply buy doing bounties or odd jobs for people in the towns.

Like in dawnstar you can mine some ore for them and sell it back to the owner of the mine.

Or just doing things like bring me x or kill x or solve town problem #76

Ok but which merchants have their gold increase? All of them? Even innkeepers?

True. In fact, doing part of the main quest at early levels is quite helpful. The first shout you get - and the next level of that shout - are quite useful when you need away from something quick!

Two things I wished I knew

1-Guards *really* don't like Shouts
2-Giants are not your friend

Yes, accidently hitting the Z button on the computer in while talking a number of guards is not a good thing.

Oh, another one:

- I wish I knew my horse could run no matter how much weight I was carrying. I left far too much good stuff behind in my first hours of gameplay.

i find it simpler to go with "the steed" and that one pickpocket perk that lets you carry more, id rather be able to carry a crap load myself than worrying about idiotic AI that will eventually enounter a fit of stupidity and die while carrying all that gear only to have to leave and come back to get the rest because your already weighted down.

The amount of trouble in transferring items with the horrid UI almost made this not worth it. Combined with the lack of being able to control what weapons they use makes pack muleing an agony. Can't imagine how pissed I was playing the sneaky archer when I found a few staffs that were too heavy for me to carry so I passed them off to my archer companion to carry for me. Well, he viewed the Staff of Fireball as an 'upgrade' for him so immediately switched to that. Next encounter I take a sneak attack then BLAMMO the whole dungeon fills with fire because pack mule boy opened up with the fireball staff and blew everything up. Not exactly "stealthy". :flamethrower: Then of course there's the endless snide "I'm sworn to carry your burdens" from Lydia.

Being the svcker that believed this --------------> http://kotaku.com/5834914/the-skyrim-team-has-a-better-plan-for-squashing-bugs-this-time The hell I went through with FONV...I told myself I would never buy a Bethesda game on release day, yup, here I am first pre-order ever! and I am back through this again. Not mad, just sayin. I will wait next time.

Knowing quest bugs are plagued in this game, I would have just waited after Christmas to buy the game. Or wait for it to go on sale, then by then, CK would be released as well and as we all know, would have made the game 100x's better than it's current state.

I wish I knew to not try everything at once. If anything, try to be as specialized as possible per character, that way you can get the most fun out of each playthrough and it will vastly increase replayability.

wow wow hold it buddy obsidian made new vegas cool your jets bethesda just published it they only offered support so if your gonna blame anyone blame obsidian because they are known for screwing up good games thats why you see that obsidian logo on it remember also because they were working on skyrim and whatever else they are up to when vegas was going on thats why NV was commisioned in the first place

While my companion isn't perfect, i find that she's an overall benefit to me. Im on 360 and the interface w/ her is fine, not a problem for me. Also, she tanks well enough for me. Biggest hassle i have with her is poor pathfinding- often gets hung up on uneven terrain. As for governing what weapon she wields, i just take back whatever item she chooses inappropriately & let her tote non-problematic thngs like pelts, problem solved.

I want to add:

Do not use any gear or potion that increases your blacksmithing, enchanting and alchemy, and then make items. Using them will result in overpowered gear that ruins the immersion.
Claim divine inspiration when you wake up from your potion binge with a poor memory of last night, a distinct lack of pants, and an incredibly sharp, mystical blade in your hand.

It's like the Hangover but with more sword and less baby.

My tip is stop worrying about immersion being handed to you and start making stuff up, like a storyteller does.

Not to spend points in the Alteration armor spell multipliers and just wear heavy armor, as a mage character.

that's the route I took ( the heavy armor I mean ) I could see that perk being better if you could get the other one that makes alteration spells last longer earlier but at 70 and alteration is a pain to level as well -_-

Shame on you. Any self-respecting PC gamer would have removed the windows key from the keyboard years ago.

1. Unstacked soul gems clogging up your inventory and recharge menu? Place they all in a chest/body to "remind" the game to stack them.

2. Getting motion sickness when playing the game? Open the command console and type "fov 90"

3. Want to steal an item on a shelf but sneaking makes you too short? Telekinesis or Fus Roh Dah

To the ppl asking about what jobs increase merchant gold. As far as i know its the generic misc quests like the bounties innkeepers give you and just random things like that around town. I never noticed actual quests that arent miscellaneous give them. I could be wrong i have much testing to do
