Im still a novice pc gamer, but these essential spec questions:
what type of graphics card? dedicated or integrated, and how much graphics memory
Is your RAM DDR2 or DDR3
what operating system
Is the i3 a multi-core?
your best best bet to get a credible answer from someone in the forum would be to include your dxdiag which would include all these specs.
-refer to the header topic in "hardware and software issues" forums on how to do that if you are not sure

Probably not. The Intel graphics chips are the worse you can get and can't handle games as demanding as these. If you can actually make it work, you'll have to turn everything down to low and it will look like crap. And probably still run like a slide show.

The best I can do with my limited knowledge of your video chipset is this: Probably.
It's in integrated video chipset, which is not intended for gaming. It's fine for watching video or working, etc..
but those are not gpu intensive activities. The rest of your system specs should be fine.

The video chipset you've got has received some decent reviews. So yeah, it'll "probably" handle it.
You won't get the same video performance as a gaming rig with a recent video card installed, but it should
be playable at medium settings, worst case... I'd hope. That said.. you buy the game at your own risk. :)

You changed my mind Timos. If it doesn't work, I can sell it on eBay or something.

The post I made never went through but going by what Timos said I guess a dedicated card does make a big difference then.

I have a core i3 330m and 4gb ram laptop. I guess the big thing is I have an HD 5650 1gb card though and I can run everything at max with 1366x768 resolution.

Honestly man, I wouldnt risk wasting the time or the money on it. ( unless you have a better equipped desktop) As a general rule rule of thumb, from my experience, you need at least a minimum of 256mb of dedicated graphics memory (maybe 128mb, but doubtful) to play almost any modern day visually intensive video games. Particularly one such as fallout. The min system requirments from the developer list the geforce 6series which are 256mb cards
Especially considering you will be unable to return once you open the game up. You could sell it on ebay, but you'll lose money on the deal. Not to mention your time and the aggrevation of the whole process. You think you're mad now? Wait til you go out and buy it, get all excited while it installs and then only find out you cant play it.
I first found that out the hard way. You have a decent laptop, just not one for high end video games unfortunately.
Still unsure?....
go to http://www.game-debate.com/games/index and search for new vegas
(or surf the net for other similar sites with this type of option. Do it a few times and see what you find out.)
they have a option for you to plug in your specs to find out if your rig can handle it.
But either way like Timos said: "Buy at your own risk" - I got nothing to gain by advising against. Goodluck either way!

Doesn't show my graphics card. But my RAM and comp are perfect.

yea, I was just trying to do that too. but you removed your dxdiag and I couldnt see what exact card you had. Theres a reason your card is not listed-> its prob not even considerably possible for it to run because the site is only listing dedicated cards, but you might be able to find another site that does. And yes you are right- all your other specs are solid, but your graphics processor it detrimental to this type of game. Let me put it this way:
the old GTA San Andreas and the original Halo PC game from the early-mid 90s required at least 128mb dedicated video memory. You computer only has 64mb. Meaning the game would be pulling memory from you RAM to process the video graphics of the game. That type of transfer alone slows down the processing for the game, not to mention there are only 4gb of RAM avail 1-2 of which are being used by the operating system.
The first time I tried play GTA SA on a high end laptop from my employer that did not have a dedicated video card, it took every character movemnt a full 2-3 seconds to complete, essentially making the game unplayable. So it would take a minute for the character to take just three steps. And thats if I was even lucky for ANY video to come up.

Look. If you dont mind that risk of having to go through the whole possibly unsuccessful process, then definately give it a try. BUT... the visual beauty of Fallout New Vegas wasnt meant to be played like that even if it does run. You'd be missing out on alot of what the game has to offer. Personally I'd say get yourself a xbox360 or PS3 if your determined to play this game. That would be in my opinion the best solution, cause upgraded your Dell laptop will cost a bundle if its even possible. My laptop and desktop are both Dell XPS series, which I learned are Dell's "gaming-capable" series. which is why Im at alll familiar. (generally speaking. There are exceptions to that for sure)
Good luck in whatever you decide

Intel integrated chipsets wouldnt run FO3 at all, so I assume it wouldnt run FONV. They are very weak, Intel "fakes" the shader models on them......And you may not be able to sell it, since when you go to install it, it ties it to your own Steam account.

1)Its laptops or notebooks, not a "lab top"
2) When posting, dont make a generic statement like they are all garbage. Some can handle the games quite nicely, it all depends on the hardware inside.

Dang... I guess I'll get it for Xbox... I was hoping for mods which was my primary purpose for getting it on the laptop.

Since its a laptop, its unable to be upgraded. If it was a desktop then you could place a new GPU in there.

Pretty much, unless you buy a new PC capable of playing the game, its best to get it on a console then.

You'll need to call Dell tech support and find out. It "might" be possible, but Id be willing to bet the chipsets are diffent and since Dell custom builds your chipset wont be compatible with a dedicated card. But its definately worth looking into. When I got my Dell XPS1530 which has a geforce m8600 dedicated card, after a couple months and I became familiar with hardware specs I was itching to upgrade and improve the graphics capabilities. Unfortunately, The card I chose to be built with it was the best possible. However the inspiron is a completely different model.
The GECK is definately reason enough to pursue PC FONV and FO3 for that matter, so Id start with calling Dell and see if you have any options. Assuming your system is still under warranty, your going to need them to handle any possible upgrades anyways. You might be stuck and soon looking to buy a new system, or waiting on dell to send a tech to put a new card in for you. Only one way to find out...
