I think Fallout 4 will have bullet drop, here's why.

Post » Tue Dec 01, 2015 2:26 pm

So remember Todd Howard said he wants the shooting mechanics in Fallout 4 to feel great and like a First Person Shooter (FPS) video game?

I don't think I saw bullet drop in the Bethesda E3 2015 conference videos, but Bethesda Game Studios did confirm in like one of the 70 articles somewhere on the internet that they hired a employee from Bungie to help them develop a shooting mechanics system.

This could mean there may be a chance that bullet drop is in, wind directions might affect bullets.

Ammunition will likely be looted from corpses and containers. (and bought from vendors)
Some people might consider finding it on corpses as "bullet drops."

Wait.... what exactly do you mean by "bullet drops" ?? Just realized I may be confused.

Ok, google helped explain it to me.
I think it could be a neat effect on sniper rifles, but wouldn't be necessary for short range.

But most shooters don't have bullet drop. I think anyway, I haven't done the research but many do not have it.

I might be wrong, but I didn't notice any bullet drop in Destiny during the 2 months I actually played it.

Maybe I'm in a minority, but to me things like bullet drop doesn't make the shooting mechanics feel great.

I think Fallout 4 will have chili cheese dogs because the dog showed that there's a food station in the game.

Wasn't it "Let the *bodies* hit the floor."? I could've sworn that's what they were saying.

I honestly don't know when people are joking or not anymore on the internet. At least for the last 5 years now I have no idea who is joking and who is not.

I highly doubt it. No doubt Bethesda wants to improve the shooter aspect of the game, but I doubt they went as far as including bullet drop. And as mentioned before, very few shooters have it anyway, even more shooters from Bungie, as its never been a thing in any of their games. Only one I can really think of (or remember) is Battlefield.

They're aiming to make shooting enjoyable, not the end all of realistic shooters. At least, that was my impression.

It was more of me making a point that just because one thing is in the game, that doesn't mean something else is in the game. Plus, if you watch the footage we see the pc shoot a raider in the head with a scoped weapon and he didn't need to account for bullet drop.

Battlefield 4 has it and it's awesome when you get a long range hit... but it's way too complicated for the average player. Most people just want to feel like a sniper, not have to make all the calculations of one.

All of the Battlefield video games have them since Battlefield: Bad Company 2.

These - exactly. Bethesda was looking to improve the FPS aspect of Fallout 4, but not to make a next-gen FPS. If it is in there, I will be extremely surprised. How will it work with VATS? If you aren't good at compensating for wind and bullet drop...you'd just switch to VATS and get the shot (assuming your attributes and perks were high enough, and you had a good enough weapon). I really don't see it happening.

I usually fight at a close enough range, even when using firearms, that I would never even notice if it had bullet drop or not.

I'm personally more concerned about RPG elements than stuff like this. These things come off a bit gimmicky to me, although if it's down to wanting or not wanting it in, I'd have to go with the former.

Yeah, with the ranges there fight are done the effect of bullet drop would be negligible.

I've played Fallout 3 with the http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/15744/? on the scope, and i haven't even sniped anyone farther than about 100 meters :hehe:

And it's not supposed to be a simulator.

"Like"? It is an FPS.

And sure, I would like some bullet drop in any form, better than bullets just disappearing into thin air. I seriously doubt there will be anything with wind though. And honestly I don't think there will be any bullet drop mechanics, especially considering the usual shooting distances... unless F4 jumps on the bandwagon and gets "bandit camps to conquer" implemented.

No thanks. I'd rather an ultra-responsive system where the bullet goes exactly where you aim it. In the last two Fallouts (particularly FO3), the sniper rifles were extremely unreliable at long ranges (because of the game's mechanics, not for realism purposes). I'm sure the shooting mechanics have addressed this, so there's no need to go even further and add bullet drop imo.

BF features ballistics to balance sniper rifles, due to the huge maps (even the original BF1942 had bullet travel time which made sniping a challenge). FO4 is a single player game and not a simulator like Arma so it would gain absolutely nothing from ballistics.

I don't know if it we would ever be shooting over a long enough distance for it to matter, but sure? They could tie in bullets with Havok physics, like they do arrows in TES, but on a much faster scale naturally. I don't think I care either way, but depending on how ballistics are actually handled in this game I don't know what will happen.

At any rate, there isn't going to be much bullet drop for my Laser Sniper Rifle.

edit: Just for clarification. Bethesda did hire a dev from Bungie for Fallout 4, he was IIRC one of the senior designers on Destiny. Now, of the many complaints I've heard about Destiny, none of them seemed to be about how the shooting felt. Beth also consulted with id for advice on how to improve the combat, too. So I'm hoping that means that the shooting is more comparable to Doom and Quake than to, say, Call of Duty.
