I Think Features Are Being Held Back For E3.

Post » Tue Oct 05, 2010 10:24 pm

I think they have a few jaw droppers up their sleeve yet. How many and what they could be are what I'm speculating on.

Mounted Combat - With all the fanfare on this one it's almost a given. Face it, the majority want this...badly.

Climbing - Again majority rules on this one and what better place than Skyrim (as trees and earth sore to new heights) to reintroduce this mechanic to the game. Rope and grapple makes a good excuse to reintroduce the crossbow too.

Camping - I remember back in 07-08, a Beth dev commenting on the wonderful simplicity and practicality of the portable campsite mod. With the addition of a woodcutting mechanic and the presence of cooking as well it makes sense that building a fire would also be included. All that's missing is a spit ( :whisper: you'll get to forge that with smithing) for roasting meat and a bedroll that will let you rest in the wild.

Hmmm can't think of any more at the moment but it's all I think about so I'll add more. Pitch in if you like.

Pete Hines pretty much said on Twitter that climbing wasn't in the game, unless he was hiding it, but then he usually says stuff like "I can't talk about that yet" so he's probably telling the truth. I wish it were back though ;-;

Well one thing I saw in the concept art during the Behind-the-scenes video was a couple of pictures of javelins. So possible return of throwing weapons.

Climbing is fruity, and mounted combat is a gimmick. To Hell with both.

Well implemented climbing would be brilliant and revolutionise the stealth system.

No doubt...they realized how popular the Unique Landscapes mods were...and still are. They are going to do alot to improve landscapes.

I just imagined a Tiny Bosmer perched high in the tree on the hunting reserve of some noble (would Nords have nobles?)

The lord comes riding through on the trail of a deer as he dismounts to check some tracks, THWACK, an arrow is lodged in his head, his guard try to find the culprit but fail to see the Bosmer fleeing into the coming blizzard

Yeah it's a dream but so what :P

I would much enjoy camping as well; it brings the roleplaying experience to a whole new level!

Bummer, i missed that.

LADDERS

Heard talk of that but fear that anecdote was punctuating the fact they still failed to get it right. Hope they did, that some form of climbing.

mounted combat is a gimmick.

Tell that to the millions of foot soldiers throughout history that were cut down and/or trampled by a mounted soldier. It's just stupid that an NPC can attack me while i'm mounted but i can't attack him or he just attacks my horse until it dies or I dismount. Lame. If your gonna have mounts, you gotta have mounted combat.

"Surely they haven't told us everything."

No, that can't be. I'm sure that what we have in the GI article is the whole game. Not much to go, m?
Of course they're holding back tons of stuff. The marketing campaign only started. And we'll have a bit more until E3, since the time until then is too much.

It would certainly be bad to reveal everything at once, so they still have plenty to show for the next ten months. Otherwise interest of new customers fades, and that's not something smart business folk would want. And if Zenimax are anything, they are that.

dont be silly. there will be no ladders. bethesda's programmers cannot comprehend the simple code used to create them since the early 90s

They haven't told us everything yet? And here I was utterly convinced Bethesda revealed all in that Game Informer article.

It was their animations. They kept scrapping it because they couldn't get it to look good in third person. If this was a FP only game we would have had ladders long ago and climbing too i'm sure of it.

Mounted Combat - With all the fanfare on this one it's almost a given. Face it, the majority want this...badly.

I could see this as being plausible, but we haven't even learned if mounts will even be in the game. They were so horrid in Oblivion (of which people were clear to point out), that they might have taken their usual approach to fixing something new. Which, in most cases, is just removing that feature all together.

Climbing - Again majority rules on this one and what better place than Skyrim (as trees and earth sore to new heights) to reintroduce this mechanic to the game. Rope and grapple makes a good excuse to reintroduce the crossbow too.

Again, this has already been confirmed as being out. Despite how advanced Skyrim's AI might be, almost ALL AI have problems with ladders. And even if they don't, it would be a very cheap exploit in the game, especially in combat scenarios (have a guard chase after you, climb up a ladder, while said guard is climbing up the ladder, strike at him).

Unless they balance this in some way (random encounters have a high chance of happening when sleeping in the wild), then I don't see camping happening just because it would remove the need for inns and make the purpose for said place useless. Why pay 20 gold a night to sleep in Winterhold when you can just buy a bedroll for 10 gold and sleep outside the city limits any time you want, no?

As for my take on what we'll see, I have some general ideas.

- More in depth anolysis of the new Radiant AI system.

- Further demonstration of the Radiant Story and new conversation system in action.

- Demonstration of the new combat system, featuring weapons such as the longsword (perhaps with shield to show off shield mechanics), dual wielded long swords, dual wielding short sword and long sword (to show the difference), bow, and possible polearm (spear, halberd, etc). I would put the possibility of crossbows, but seeing as they overhauled how the bow works, adding in crossbows would only negate the need to use bows at all.

- Demonstration of the new magic system (perhaps tied in with the new combat system)

- Perhaps a demonstration of the new UI

- While all this is happening, they'll be talking about the new graphical features that the new engine presents.

- And (I'm calling this right now), to finish it all off, the PC will fight a dragon.

Well in Oblivion you didn't have to pay anything either, just join a guild for free.
