I think i have a bit of a phobia

Post » Sun Jul 11, 2010 3:11 pm

i am a pretty bad insomniac (thats why im up right now) and the cause of this is a fear i have. A fear of falling asleep.

i know it is totally irrational and i know nothing bad is going to happen, but when asleep it feels as if time is bended, the dream could feel as if it is lasting hours, or it could play out in a matter of moments.

i never like dreaming, occasionally i have a dream that i enjoy, but i hate the unpredictability of it.

any one have any advice.

I can't recommend any treatment, but you must have somniphobia.

I think it's weird how you're just laying there with your eyes closed, not really thinking, not alert, for like 8 hours. Just feels weird, but it still doesn't keep me from sleeping.

I advise a dream where a de-clawed Freddy Kreuger is stuck in a tiger's cage with a dozen tigers and one Richard Simmons.

It sounds like you're having frequent nightmares? I'm not sure, but I do know that a doctor could probably provide you with a better explanation.

Learn to embrace the unknown. If you're having more bad dreams than good, it's your fear that's causing it. Understand that sleep is a very significant aspect of our existence and has been since animal life forms first walked the earth. In other words it's not some kind of alien influence, it's completely natural and very important. Even bad dreams are important. It's how our unconscious mind deals with things that our conscious mind will not.

I'd recommend the insight of a mental health professional - possibly a therapist specializing in psychodynamics. My other advice would be to sleep on it, but that may be counterproductive. :P

Yeah, I'd also suggest seeking help for it. That is an unusual phobia indeed. Have you tried anything to help yourself get over this? Is it your fear of dreams stopping you from sleeping, or the fear of sleep itself?

Get more exercise if you're not already. You'll be too tired to do anything but sleep at night. I have trouble sleeping at night too, but it's okay because I have teh internetz. :D

I have the same problem and it doesn't help out either that most of my dreams are nightmares (whatever happend to the good old days of having video game or anime dreams...the past two years have really taken a toll on me---but anyway). I wouldn't worry to much about dreams (unless they're nightmares) too much they can't hurt you, try listening to soft music like New Age or classical, don't eat before going to sleep (I heard that can lead to having nightmares) and if you're still having a sleep phobia seek medical advice.

your sense of time most certainly is distorted while you sleep, but i can recall 2 dreams i've had within a year where i saw a clock in my dream moments before waking up only to find that it was correct which means it is likely only your perception of events is distorted

I hate sleep, I think you waste far too much time doing it. Though... I sure as heck can sleep.

Really with matters like this I recommend seeing a shrink instead of coming to the message boards. If it was something simple like having a few nights of insomnia where you couldn't sleep then I would say anything. However if you have an actual fear of falling asleep that can lead to some very bad problems. Still not sure what happened to me, but I woke up from a dream where my heart was racing and I couldn't get it to stop. Went to a cardio doc and said it was a virus, but I have my doubts due to some circumstances.

It's best to go see a doc about it and tell them what's happening then try to get a recommendation from a doctor.

im 16 good sir.

also, i guess fear isnt a good word to describe it, i can usually get to bed eventually, alot of times i stay up too 1:30-3:00
and i really dont think this has enough of an impact on my life to dictate therapy.

I have a simliar fear of sleeping. I dont like thinking that soon I will be suddenly thrust into the middle of a dream thinking that its real. It's hard to explain, I dont mind dreaming, even though most of them are nightmares, I just dont like how one moment you're sleeping then suddenly you're in the middle of the dream. I dont like the anticipation. Usually I just stay up so late that I get too tired to think about it that much :P

If everything else fails try a hypnoist.

Just for kicks.

out of curiosity, if you have nothing to do that day do you also hate the idea of waking up? if so it might be similar to how i feel about sleep, i hate the idea of going to sleep but after i'm asleep i hate the idea of waking up

Try working out.

Excercise during the day should help you burn off any extra energy that might be keeping you awake.

That being said, a teenager that stays up late and sleeps in late is NOT unusual.

Start going to support groups. Not for sleeping, though. For other things. Things you don't actually need support with. Then when it's huggie-time in the end, just hug someone and let it all out. You'll sleep like a baby.
