I think I may have selected the wrong majors...

Post » Tue Sep 01, 2009 12:28 pm

Ok, so my character is only level 2, but most of his major skills are in the 30's... Some, high 30's. The class is:

Breton
The Thief

Destruction
Restoration
Blade
Alchemy
Sneak
Security
Light Armor. (Not 100% sure but I think that's the last one.)

Most of the skills are now like 30+. I think destruction and Blade are still in the 20's, but both 29 I think. Have I chosen the wrong skills or not?

Im afraid that when i'll only be able to level up to like level 40 rather than 50, because my skills have got a kindof head start.

This brings me to my next question, it'll make you wonder, why i've asked the above, but anyway.

Is there anyway that I can check that my uncapper is working or not? I've got Ely's uncapper, and i've installed it like said on the readme.

I've installed it too.

C: Program files/Bethesda softworks/Oblivion/data/OBSE/Plugins, and then it's in there, is that right?

Thanks

Masterlord.

Your major skills will start between 25 and 40, depending on your specialization and any racial skill bonuses. For example, marksman will start at 40 for a Bosmer who speicializes in stealth, but it will start at 25 for an Orc who specializes in combat.

Characters will max out around level 45 - 53 or so. You can plug your character's data into this http://www.linklost.com/occ/ to nail that down precisely for your character.

All quests, loot, monster types are available by level 30, so what do you get if you level beyond 30? You get more hitpoints and so do your foes. You will likely become relatively weaker at high levels. This is because once your key skills and attributes are maxed, your damage will not go up further; however, the hitpoints of your foes will continue to increase making them more tedious to kill. I have therefore never seen a purpose to leveling a character beyond 30.

I actually like to pick some major skills my character will never touch precisely to limit how high they level.

Let me ask if you don't mind, why do you want to level so high?

I'm sorry that I'm not familiar with your uncapper mod.

Limiting level to 30... this is sinking in more and more with me every time I start over again (which I am about to do again... problems w/ a mod that kinda went kablooy on my savegame... previously highest I ever got was Level 20 + Main Quest done).

I was thinking of this:

Breton Male, custom class "Graysword", specialization Combat (or maybe Magic), Intelligence / Endurance
Blade, Light Armor, Block, Sneak, Destruction, Conjuration, Illusion (7 attributes covered w/ majors)

... but maybe I will replace Sneak with Marksman for more level control. If it can all work out w/ getting Marksman to 50 (for 'zoom perk'), then I can stop developing Marksman and hopefully stay at a lower level. That would be Marksman = 50 = 5 levels, I should be able to do it, and then maybe hold back Block a bit.

I don't know much about the uncapper mod you're using but it should let you keep levelling even after your skills max out so starting values would no longer determine your potential highest level.

However, if you wanted the lowest possible starting skills you may have chosen the wrong specialization if you went with stealth, since that gives a +5 bonus to all stealth skills. Bretons, of course, get a +10 racial bonus to Restoration.

As the others have said, there's no reason to attain very high levels except that they're there. The downside is that some battles become very, very long and tedious. Maybe you like it that way though. Your character's damage potential maxxes out somewhere between 20 and 30. Max damage weapons and best armor are attainable in the low 20's, and once your offensive skills and their attributes reach 100 that's it for damage but health (yours and theirs) keeps increasing.

I think some people might argue against some of those majors from an efficient leveling standpoint, but if you play the character properly and don't go crazy making restore fatigue potions just to sell or something, I am sure it will be fine. You might want to read up on spell chaining to make the most out of your Destruction skill. I would advise that you also work on Illusion a lot as a minor skill as it is a very good school, command spells with just a short duration work wonders. I would also develope Alteration as a minor, and you could even use that to open locks to slow down your Security levels which is good as that skill doesn't really help you kill anything.
