I Think Mods Can Be on PS3 After All...

Post » Tue Apr 05, 2011 6:54 am

So valve announced that the ps3 version of portal 2 (not the 360 version) will have steamworks, development tools, and cross platform play. This is a HUGE advancement with sony allowing this on the ps3. This could open up many other possibilities for other games, skyrim included...

Development tools does not equate to the Creation Kit. Several games already provide tools for limited user content creation.

None of the other things have to do with mods at all.

It won't make it possible for mods on PS3 for Skyrim.

Portal 2 is an A->B game with loading breaks between sections and -if its like the first Portal- little opportunity to go back on yourself. Any new content for that will likely involve new maps separate from the main game. It's also made by Valve who also run and oversee Steam.

Skyrim is an openworld game with freedom to go in any direction (To a point). New content is intergrated into the main world.

Besides, I think other developers would prefer to wait and see how Steam support on consoles works before implementing it themselves.

PS3 version of Portal 2 will have Steam Cloud integration, and Cross Platform. Nothing was said about development tools, and even if Portal 2 was moddable, it isn't as extensive as Skyrim / Oblivion / Fallout / Morrowind's modding.

Just stop with the consoles mods thing, it will never happen. Can't people understand this?!

Also: Modding =/= Map Creation

Ign has a new article up which says specifically "steamworks, DEVELOPMENT TOOLS, and cross platform play". Ps3 will be the first console to have this and regardless if skyrim has it or not its a STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION FOR THE FUTURE...its possible.

ARGH :banghead: This subject is doing my head in! If you want to play mods buy a frigging PC. You can get one nowdays that'll play Skyrim for the same price as the PS3 was on release.

Well, on those grounds, yes it is a step in the right direction.

But, chances are it won't happen for TES until the next generation of consoles. At that point Bethesda may be able to provide a suitable tool for console modding.

"Marking the debut of Steam functioning on any next generation console, the features shipping in the PS3 version of Portal 2 include cross platform play (PC/Mac vs. PS3) for multiplayer games, persistent cloud-based storage of PS3 saved games, and cross platform chat (PC/Mac and PS3)." -http://ps3.ign.com/articles/114/1144414p1.html (And IGN isn't really a reliable source of info.)

I see no development tools mentioned in this article. PS3 isn't the first console to have cross-platforming. It's the first to have Steam Cloud integration. And Steamworks is Valve's Steam DRM, Steam Cloud is the cloud-based storage and support.

We had it in Unreal, but that was more akin to level maps than what we see in TES.

Check the NEW ign article. Its on the homepage of ign and is labeled "the week that was: january 23, 2011". It specifically says "development tools". Sorry can't link it I'm on my phone right now.

The news story that the "week in review" article links to says this:

At E3 2010, Valve announced the PS3 version would include Steamworks, a set of publishing and development tools that integrates, among other things, game updates and community features.
Steamworks is a development tool for the game developers, not for end users. I think they may be misunderstanding what Valve has contracted with Sony to provide.

Agreed, this is the only type of development tool that has been mentioned anywhere by Valve. I think IGN just worded that Week in Review article badly.

What these people said.It won't be the same thingas mods on a pcand modding Skyrim would seem to be a lot more difficult especially with some mods.

For those who are unaware, here is the major problem with mods on a console:

1. With just a few lines of code, I could (maliciously or not):
a. Crash your game.
b. Cause numerous writes to your hard-drive, lessening its life.
c. Use up all the VRAM on your console, causing it to slow to a crawl.
d. Corrupt files.

2. Console manufacturers would, in the interest of PR, have to authorize every single mod that was released (if done officially).

3. There is little ability for modders to work on a console - that is to say, debugging solely on a console system would be torture for modders.

You missed one: architecture. Windows PCs are all x86-based (throwing out Itanium, AMD64 is just an extension of x86). Both the 360 and PS3 are POWER-based (PowerPC for 360, Cell for PS3). This means they are incompatible on the lowest level with each other, and porting would require rewriting, and quite possibly a violation of the SDK license. Anything near the level of complexity of the Construction Set is impossible. Sure, maybe map editing can be done, but nothing more without serious investment.

If Sony can get more mod friendly games on their console I would be more than happy to switch over to the PS3. So far Unreal 3, but wasnt really into it so no reason to switch. Now if they can get something like Skyrim mods onto the PS3 port I will throw my Xbox 360 into the garbage and get a PS3. Well mabey I wont throw it away, but I'll run right to Gamestop and trade it in with all my accessories and games to put towards a PS3.

No clue here. Steam / Steamworks works just fine for me. Never had a problem with either.

That seems a little uncalled for.

Besides, consoles and mods should never mix. Have you seen what happened when Treyarch allowed the community to create custom icons? Image search it. I dare you. <_<

Now picture custom player models.

Steam's just fine for me as well.
