Thinking about making the switch to PC, worth it?

Post » Mon Nov 18, 2013 11:36 am

Hi. I'm getting tired of playing Skyrim on Xbox 360 and I'm seriously considering switching to Pc. Mainly for the mods, and also the better graphics, I'm not really a person who gets bored very easily. I just wanted to hear from you guys on this matter. I have the money, all I have to do is press add to cart. Worth it?

I was wondering about this too.

I currently play it on my sister's boyfriend's ps3 and I really like it, but she's movie state in june, and I'll be starting college and moving out, so I thought of maybe investing is a gaming pc, though it svcks because I'd only play skyrim on it :/

Press 'add'.

Even if not having mods... the console can be used for adjustments, not as much as mods but useful to cut out things that niggle you.

For instance, those clouds that hinder seeing a lot of the map, they can be turned off.

No map clouds

[MapMenu]sMapCloudNIF=0

Add that to Skyrim.ini

Note: Skyrim ini is in the PC Documents Games area on the PC "Dektop".

How can this even exist as a question?

If you have the funds, do it. Now.

Yeah, definitely worth it, but don't be too hasty in buying a computer. It's cheaper to order parts and build one.
Here's one I recently ordered, still waiting on all the parts to arrive: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/20bx2

You can check out the details of specific parts here http://www.game-debate.com/ and here http://www.passmark.com/index.html.

It's definitely worth it, but I have to ask you this: can you play with Legos? If the answer is yes, then I must ask another: Why not build your own pc rather than purchasing a pre-built one? You'll get more bang for your buck, and a better working knowledge of your pc... and an easier time troubleshooting problems when/if they arrive.

If you can't, or aren't comfortable building your own, then do you have a family member or friend to assist you in this task? If so, consider them as an option while you pay attention to how they do it, it will help you when/if you should ever feel comfortable enough to try it on your own.

Also, there are some great people who give really good advice in http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1476405-the-community-tech-thread-no-132/. There are also some great videos in the OP of that thread on how to build your own pc. Really, it's not as hard as it's perceived to be. Take your time, and don't let yourself get overwhelmed by the idea of doing it yourself.

EDIT: almost forgot, Welcome to the forums,http://images.uesp.net/c/c4/Fishystick.jpg.

Oh, yes. And make sure you get the Legendary edition. Even though you may not be interested in one or two, of the three DLCs, some of the essential mods, land mods and overhaul mods will require all of the DLC to work.

System Requirements Lab should tell you whether your PC can run Skyrim or not.

I'm pretty certain Bethesda actually released a pack for around $60 dollars which included all five Elder Scrolls games. With Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim, along with the modding ability of a PC, prepare to say goodbye to your life.

Don't do it! If you used to play with a controller, you going to hate playing on the PC. I tried Oblivion on PC and totally hated it. :yuck:

Nothing better then a good console and a controller. Get a PS3 instead. :whisper:

1. You'll get used to it. First time I loaded up Skyrim on PC I kept running into walls and stuff, but I learned quickly. A mod that adjusts the extremely slow walking speed on PC is recommended though!

2. It's possibly to connect a 360 control to the PC and use it to play the game. (This can't be done with a PS3 control, AFAIK.)

Short answer. Yes.

Long answer. Yes it is worth it if you have basic knowledge about how PC hardware works. Not that hard to learn though. All you need to know you can read up on the Internet and should not take more then 10-15 min to have red. Each PC is individual in there hardware setup so do this if you like to get the best hardware for your money.

Just remember do not buy a laptop PC to game with if you do not already own a desktop PC to game as desktop PC are allot better and allot cheaper.

There are allot of different controllers you can use to PC if you want. You're not forced to play with a keyboard and mouse.

First link I found on google http://www.gamestop.com/browse/pc/controllers/accessories?nav=138c-74 just to give an example...

You do realize you can plug 360 pad to PC and use it as the controller?

Not to hijack the OP's thread, but as someone who has been putting off getting a PC for years now, I have a few questions regarding this subject my own bad self.

1. How hard is it to put together a PC? As someone who has essentially no computer knowledge, am I better off just ordering a custom rig?

2. Would it be better for me to splurge and buy a very nice PC now so I don't have to upgrade as much, or should I start small and work my way up?

Wouldn't do someone like me any good. Can't stand Xbox's controllers.

Indeed. In fact it and many other newly developed PC games are ready to be compatible for windows with the Xbox controller. You don't even need any special 3rd party software as it's essentially plug-n-play. If you are like me and use your TV for the monitor, it is the exact same as playing on the Xbox. Well, I take that back. It's a lot better.

Then for games that do not fully support the controller, like Oblivion, there is the small initial investment of $11 US to download Xpadder. The program allows the controller to be used for all of the rest and even MMOs.

So no one should be deterred from get the game, or any game for the PC because of a controller issue, because there isn't one.

It's literally plug tab A into slot B. Plus there are a lot of great advice from the Tech Thread that is linked by BarretsFloyd. They helped me out a great deal. I got a lot of the step by step from the amazing tutorials from Newegg. In fact I got a better deal and purchased everything from the case to the components to the KB&M to the cables down to the wire ties.

If I can figure out how to do it I know anyone else can.

If you have the money, it's better to get it now. Some will say... "Wait a couple of months and super x part will be available and the current part will be cheaper." Forget that. I mean if it's a week or something, maybe. Otherwise, you will never get into anything as you will always be waiting for the "next big thing" to cut the price of the current.

I had the opportunity to get the new i7 processor and was told repeatedly... "you don't need that". So, I settled for the i5. 6 months later I wished I had spent the extra $150. The same for my video card.

I spent 1200 for my set up and I wished I had spent another 300. I don't use my rig just for games, so don't listen to idiots that scream out "That's crazy just to play games". My rig replaced my entire entertainment system and that includes my cable box. The point is... you will use it for more than just games.

It's not a "gaming PC". It's a powerful computer.

There are a lot of gamepads to choose from. My wrists cannot take more than a few minutes with that mouse and the keyboard is just too clunky and I end up hitting the wrong key.
