Thinking of Getting a New Video Card

Post » Wed Oct 07, 2009 10:51 am

Hi all,

I am thinking of getting a new video card and am wondering what the best one would be. I have a couple questions regarding video cards and Oblivion that I hope someone will be able to answer. They are:

1. What would the best card be that would allow Oblivion to be put on "Ultra High" graphics settings while running HDR and the highest sampling of Anti Aliasing all at the same time with a reasonable FPS rate?

2. I currently have 2 gigs of ram. Would I need to get more gigs to make the above possible?

3. I am thinking of getting an ATI Radeon card. I know that Nvidia cards don't allow HDR and Anti Aliasing to be run at the same time, but does an ATI card allow that?

I currently have an Nvidia GeForce 7300 SE/7200 GS card, if that helps with answering the questions.

Thanks in advance,
Agnarond

Important questions to answer first

What PSU do you have? (brand and rating)
Also what processor?

Another 2 gigs of memory would not hurt and would certainly be recommended for vista/win7.

No cards will let you run HDR and AA at the same time from the game settings, instead you have to use HDR without AA in the game settings and have your card force AA, both nVidia and ATI should be able to do this

Radeon HD 5830 ~$230
Radeon HD 5670 ~$100

either should be sufficient, however if your psu and cpu are not up to par, you will not get the performance you want.

I recommend having a 550W psu minimum to ensure sufficient power.
and a decent dual core cpu would be best for a minimum (AMD Phenom II X3 710/Intel Core2 Duo E8400, or better)

and having 4 GB ram would be good regardless of the OS (~3.5 GB in XP is better than 2 GB)

I will have a better idea of what to suggest when you have a chance to post more info.

5830 is not really a good option and really not for $230 (they've come down to around $180 now since noone was buying them !!) -- it uses more power than the 5850 due to being based on the 5870 PCB and for the slight increase in price you are much better off with http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125318 -- also if that is 2 much then the http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131327 rather than the 5670 @ $100 (though they can be found around $70 now !)

Again though it really depends on the rest of the system he has (CPU and PSU etc.) and the amount he can afford to spend - so just randomly giving answers without knowing those only confuses things !

THe GTX 460 is the next best card to the Radeon 5850.

It sounds like he may have an AGP system, folks.

If that's the case, I wouldn't suggest he upgrade the video at all because the rest of the system probably needs an overhaul too and today's AGP creations aren't priced too well.

If he has PCIe, I'd just suggest a Radeon 5650 / 5670. An effective, cheap and rather low power consumption choice that will chew up and spit out Oblivion.

Thanks everyone for your fast replies. Anyway here's some more of my system specs.

Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.00GHz 2.99 GHz
1.50 GB of RAM

I'm not sure of my psu, but I suspect its around 550W. I'll let you know when I get the exact number.
Hope this helps,

Uh, budget?

Your choices are going to limited by that old processor.

And do find out about your power supply.

Also do us a favor and Please Post a dxdiag:
Start - Run (if Vista or Win 7, the search box acts like Run) - type dxdiag - hit Enter - "save all info" button - open txt file and copy/paste EVERYTHING here

Would I be able to run a Radeon HD 5830 or 5670 on Windows XP alright with my current processor and RAM?

The Radeon 5670 is the most I would go with your system. Here's the manual for your Dimension 4700:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim4700/sm/specs.htm#wp1043338

Shows having a 305W power supply...it's understated, so the Radeon 5670 will work fine. Forget about the Radeon 5830. The power supply can't take it and your processor will just bottleneck it. The Radeon 5670 will be bottlenecked as well, but I guess it'll be tolerable. I'm more inclined to suggest something like the Radeon 4670, 5570, or 4650 for that matter....or the GeForce GT 240

Thanks everyone for your fast replies. Anyway here's some more of my system specs.

Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.00GHz 2.99 GHz
1.50 GB of RAM

Forget about a new video card, just get yourself a new computer. That's a pretty old processor and you need more RAM as well.

Granted, it IS an older system, but, for a single core processor, the P4 3.0 isn't too bad. Now, keep in mind, I wouldn't spend more that a hundred bucks on a vid card for that machine, anything meaner would be a waste anyway, but, you can pick up 4670's pretty cheap these days, and he would pick up a fair bit of performance..... going to 2 gig of ram wouldn't hurt. (being sure to maintain DDR capability.....) But yeah, the machine is old, and several generations behind.

What about an Intel i7 920, Radeon HD 5830, and 2 more gigs of RAM? Could someone please give me a cost estimate on that?

Not gonna happen with your current motherboard as it uses a different socket (LGA 775), which also doesn't use the necessary DDR3 RAM. You'd have to get an entirely new motherboard (LGA 1366) to support Core i7 and entirely new RAM. For a Core i7 setup for just CPU, MOBO, and RAM alone (assuming 6GB kit)....that'll run you easily at least $600.

And don't bother trying to upgrade your motherboard with your current Dimension 4700 case either...strong chance it's not going to fit. Older Dell cases have odd mounting and clearance locations. If you want Core i7, look at building an entirely new PC.

Yeah thats a bit over budget. Will the Radeon 5570 be sufficient to run oblivion on ultra high graphics settings with HDR and AA around 40,50, or 60 FPS provided I get more RAM? I should be able to afford that.

Being that this is an older game, you may get ultra high settings with a Radeon 5570 for vanilla Oblivion (no stessful mods) to an extent...perhaps up to 1280x1024 resolution....or 1440x900 if we're talking widescreen.

Would Qarl's Texture Pack count as a stressful mod?

Ohhhhh yea. But actually, upon second guessing myself...I checked up on the Radeon 5570 and it's on par with the Radeon 4670. This card is known to pull ultra high pretty well at the resolutions mentioned above and perhaps a bit higher (1680x1050). You may just get away with Qarl's, but that processor of yours is what's gonna cause performance dips.

Would there be any other processors besides the i7 920 that would work with my motherboard and also allow for better performance with the Radeon 4670?

No. Single core processors have been out of production for a long time, and all dual and multi core processors will use a different socket than what you have now. A rule of thumb is that when you upgrade your processor, you also need to upgrade your motherboard. Almost every new processor generation will use a different socket configuration. There are some exceptions, but not many in my experience.

The only processors that your current motherboard supports are Pentium 4's, which have been out of production for a LONG time now. You can still find them though in OEM fashion (no retail box or heatsink fan, just chip), but they're not really worth looking into nowadays through retail channels.

Ebay will have plenty that you can get secondhand for cheap. You can probably snag a Pentium 4 570 @ 3.8GHz for pretty cheap....I wouldn't pay more than $50 for it though.

Say, I think I've found a way around the high budget for a new CPU, MOBO, and RAM. I know someone who has a fairly new computer (just about a year old, actually), with an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU E7500 @ 2.93GHz 2.94GHz. I might take the processor along with the motherboard and RAM that comes with it, since he no longer uses his computer, and install them into mine. Would that processor mentioned above provide a sufficient performance with the Radeon HD 5670 or 5830? I imagine so since it is a dual core as opposed to my current one which is single, but just thought I'd check.

It would, but again....I think you may run into issues mouting that motherboard into your existing case. Either I or you will have to look into the Dell Dimension 4700 case and its mounting and motherboard clearance layout to make sure that this board will even fit. Older Dell cases are not friendly in allowing third party ATX or Micro-ATX form factor motherboards to fit.

First find out the form factor of this board. Then find out if it will be compatible with the case.
