Thinking of replaying FO3, but this time heavily modded. Thu

Waiting on Fallout 3 New Vegas to be patched and modded to what in my view would be an optimal state (less buggy, less consoley, better graphics, more radio station selection, better RPG elements, etc. etc.) is likely gonna take awhile- months, likely. Since I'm hankering to revisit the FO3 world, I'm thinking of replaying F03- I played through it unmodded when it was first out, then sold it. So I'd buy the GOTY version (with a bunch of DLC that I didn't play). Really though, the factor that would make me revisit it is the proliferation of mods that "fixed" it and made it better a la FCOM etc. Oblivion.

So, question to the community here:

Anyone playing a modded FO3? If so, what mods you suggest, how extensive is the overhaul (I would like a better looking, less consoley, more RPG/deadly experience, more varied missions, radio stations, NPCs, expanded hotkeys etc. etc. etc.- basically a different and better game in many respects), and how easy was it to install the mods? I don't think I have it in me to undertake another modding experience like that of FCOM for Oblivion, which, if you've tried, you will know what I mean. Basically, does playing a modded FO3 make it feel like a substantially different/new/better game like all the mods for Oblivion do?

Also, will buying it from Steam allow me to avoid the very annoying Games for Windows Live "feature"? I disabled that crap when I first bought the game in part b/c I use my left hand on my mouse and therefore use the right-hand keypad, and resented not being able to use the Home key (or whatever key GFWL uses). If I do use Steam, does Steam Cloud work for modded games, i.e., will I not be able to continue my game on a different machine using a modded game? I'd expect this to be the case. Also, do mods work for Steam in the same manner they do for non-Steam version, and b/c I am using Windows 7, will I run into administrative permission errors like in Oblivion (which is why folks suggest installing Oblivion outside of the Program Files folder)?

Thanks!

GFWL is disabled (thank god) when you use FOSE (which some mods require).

Yes mods can turn the game out a lot better. Look http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/top/alltime.php for all the mods your heart can handle, it's the top 100 mods on FO3nexus.

More RPG/deadly: FWE is a big overhaul, look at Fallout New Vegas, look at the hardcoe feature, (from what I've heard) you make that twice as hardcoe and you got FWE. It's a great mod, makes you have to think before you wander of into the wasteland.

More varied missions: I haven't tried any of the quest mods out there, but I bet they are great.

Radio: There are many radio stations mods, from more GNR songs, to a radio station where you pick the songs.

NPCs: Again, I haven't looked for ones, but there are a Project Beauty (I think thats what it's called) which makes them look better.

Hotkeys: Again, don't know but I bet there are.

Installation isn't as hard as FCOM is, there closest you'll get to FCOM is FOIP, which are patches for all the major overhauls, their just additional esp's.

Don't know about Steam, but some people recommend against it, because of some problems it could have, however I'm not completely sure. :)

Thanks. Avoiding stupid GFWL was really the only reason I was going to choose the Steam version, so if FOSE disables it, I'm good getting the boxed version. Thanks for your reply.

There is probably a mod for that anyway, rookie mistake!
