Thinking of starting a let's play series

Post » Wed Sep 08, 2010 1:24 am

The title and the description give most of it away, I guess, but here goes.

I am thinking of starting a let's play series, but don't really know what program I should use to record the game or my voice. Could I have some pointers on finding decent recording programs?

http://www.fraps.com/ is definitely the best one that I know of, but you'll have to pay if you want to make videos longer than 30 seconds with it.

I've been using Fraps since I started making videos (two years+?) and it's been great. Worth the money. Many many options for recording (I love the buffering where you can record the last x seconds).

Is there a cheaper alternative that provides similar video quality? I'm not looking for super high def or anything, just enough to see what's actually going on on-screen.

XFire has a recording ability, but I think it's heavier than Fraps. One guy I watch(ed) uses/used Camtasia.

I've seen Let's Plays recorded in Hypercam, which was good quality but it has a small watermark at the top.

I've tried Fraps, I don't like it. I recorded http://youtu.be/h7AB2c-LAI8 in Xfire, which is free.

xfire doesn't want to record on anything but solitare and windows media player, despite the fact that the game I'm playing is registered for xFire, so I guess I'll try hypercam

Or you could do something original.

While Sturgeon's Law certainly applies, there's a lot of very good LPs out there.

If you want to do an LP, then the fact that it's "not original" shouldn't hold you back. Do what you enjoy, not what others dictate you enjoy.
