Thinking Of Starting over

Post » Thu Sep 02, 2010 5:42 pm

Im 18 hrs in, and I feel that not having charisma and luck is making things less fun, but My characters never have charisma, so I could just make another file with a silver tongued devil...what do you guys think.?

I love the game so far seeing as I have almost 20 hrs into it, and the furthest I have gotten was finishing all the quests in Novac, so I know I have a lot to do. Im just fearful that all the time I am Investing in this character will feel like a waste in the end. :cryvaultboy:

i would test the idea for it frist before you comit to making a new character. but speech (and barter to a point) are used far more that they were in fo3 tho most converstation option (not all) can have the Lady Killer and Confirmed Bachelor to bypass having low speech skill.

you could add more luck and speech through perks: intense training for luck/charisma, finesse for +5 luck in VATS, Tag! @lvl 16 for adding 15 points to speech.
You can also get +1 luck and +1 Charisma with an implant, they don't come cheap though.

I would definitely invest into a charismatic character, all of my characters so far have had very high charisma, this is because in New Vegas many quests have speech checks. These speech checks can do a variety of things, whether it being able to avoid violent situations to skipping trivial parts of quests or better rewards...

Basically, Charisma pays off a lot more in New Vegas than FO3...

Have you actually seen any charisma speech checks though? I've seen speech checks for int and luck, but not charisma.

I'm playing with a base charisma of 1 and so far have still made all my speech skill checks without even investing very many points into it. With naughty nightwear adding 10 to speech, the speech magazine adding +20 (with the perk), and party time mentats adding +10 speech from the +5 charisma bonus, I can pass speech checks 40 points over my base speech skill.

Speech and Barter checks are common, this doesn't mean you need to put points in Charisma though.

According to the Prima guide Charisma also effects your compansions DR, for what thats worth, not seen evidence of this though.

Charisma doesn't seem to do much besides increase your companions Damage/Armor by +5 per point. For speech checks you only need Skill Points.

For luck I suggest an Energy-Weapons character as you'll depend on Critical Hits a lot. With high luck not only will you be a gambling machine but you can have 10 (Luck) + 5 (Finesse) + 5 (recon beret) for a passive 20% non-VATs base critical chance which is then multiplied by 2.5 when using most energy weapons for 50% chance for critical hits or 92.5% chance when using VATS. Be sure to get Better Criticals and maybe Hunter to really get the most out of it.

Very interesting. im going to keep that in mind if i decide to make a pure energy weapon user.

I agree - the speech-impaired miss out on alot of rewards and opportunities. A character can make up for a lack of strength or agility. They can't, however, make up for a lack of charisma.
