This armour is awesome

I was just reading one of my old Victor Annuals when I came across a page entitled "Odd Armour of World War 1", and it just seemed to fit PERFECTLY to the metal armour you see in Fallout.

Victor, for the uninitiated (i.e. about 95% of people reading this) was a British magazine for boys chock full of stories and comics of daring-do and all that good stuff, and their annuals would often have fun pages of historical weapons or famous battles and what-not.

But enough waffle, here's the page:

(By the way, the page opposite is "Cadman, The Fighting Coward" before you ask.

and now for some close-ups:

This is probably the closest thing to metal armour in the game.

Who wouldn't just love to have a shield with them in the wasteland? In combination with one handed weapons, like a sword...

But my personal favourite is this guy...

Now that is metal armour, it would probably give you a Perception penalty but who cares? It's just, cool, that armour needs to be in Fallout, or any game.

BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE

Here's the front cover of the Annual in question.

That is all.

But, "Was it effective?" is the real question...

Armour looks stupid to me. Might have been real but chances are it was just an experiment. Last thing I would want to wear in the muddy trenches of WW1 are those suits of armour. Even worce when going out into No mans land, with that added weight from that armour to the weight of my gun, ammo, under coat and others equipment I would drown in the mud or be shot to hell because I would not be able to move.

FO already has metal armour which looks cool and is good to have against small arms and melee but I find slows me down to much.

I just wish FO New Vegas has shields for the Legion like the Romans had.

Well the Italian's found their armour was somewhat useful for wire-cutting, although they were doing a lot of fighting in the Alps so the terrain was different to the western front. Also those Canadian Spade-Shields were by all accounts very useful (It was basically a monopod). But yeah, as the box says, the Americans dumped their armour shortly afterwards because it restricted movement.

Canadian Shield Spade was also crap. I'll let wiki say "In 1914, 25,000 shield-shovels were ordered and shipped to Europe for use by the 1st Canadian Division.[6] Preliminary tests however revealed the unfortunate conclusion that the shovel’s blade was incapable of stopping the penetration of gunfire even from the smallest of enemy calibre arms. Its value as a digging tool was also questioned as soldiers commented against the shovel’s weight, its inability to be easily carried, and the fact that the blade was poor for shovelling loose soil as it contained a large sight-hole. With such a reputation, several high ranking Canadian and British military officials refused to press the instrument into service. With these developments, an executive order was eventually issued for the shovels to be reduced to scrap,"

WW1 did see some creative ways fo killing without being seen. Guns set up on riges so they can be lifted and fired above the soldiers head using mirrors/periscopes to aim. Both Sides ended up using thick steel plates with firing slots but they were fixed. Allied troops would take the bullet out of the case and then put it back in backwards, point in. So when it hits that thick plate it would cause metal spliters to come off the back. Some Trench knives were more like triangular spikes to better get through German trench coats. WW2 Germans invented a gun with a curved barrel to fire around courners.

Yeah the Russians also had a similar gun for their tank crews, by the way, did you see that QI episode with the curved barrel STG44 and the periscope?

I don't watch much British TV living in Canada but that's a good video. It talks about the Israeli courner shooter. Also funny with the end part :D We have alot of hoplaphobes here. Suprised the UK would have that, did they not have a big crackdown on guns? They are even registering knives now are they not?

I thought Canadians had a lot of guns, with all that hunting over there, I suppose it depends on where you live.

Yep Canada per-capita of population has as many guns as USA but ours are mostly hunting rifles and shotguns. Full auto weapons are illegal and Handguns have been illegal for over a 100 years. Yet there are so many here that don't seem to understand that and they want all guns to be illegal. They want to take away my hunting rifles

I heared the UK is now registering knives.

Unless it's part of your religion, you won't get away with carrying knives here; hell the bins in my secondary school (I think thats like High School in US) were taken away because health and saftey said the edges were too sharp, I am dead [censored] serious, just little metal bins on the floor, all gone.

That's... that's bad, why is society so damn overprotective, I own a shotgun, I have a licence for it. Yet if I wished I could saw it down and rob a bank, which of course I won't, but nevertheless the risk is still there. It's all based on trust and when the authorities cannot trust us to look after ourselves that's when I get angry, human beings for all their faults deserve to decide their own fate. Also, (apologies for playing captain obvious) if the authorities were more effective at law enforcement, not only would then there would be less crime, but people of criminal intent will be discoraged, and therefore there would less of a need to take draconian 'ban everything' measures.

I'm from a military family, and therefore my house has a rather nice collection of weapons (swords, African Spears, and a Commando Knife) so perhaps I should start taking some measurements in readiness to sign a licence, and if need be, dig a few holes in the walls...

Hum I noticed not far off topic (perhaps) that the police in the states have changed there riot shields which way back used to be round and see through then went to rectangle and see through and now most seem to be using rectangle and black with a little window to peep out off... I am assuming (and we all know what that does ) the switched shapes as like the romans learned they interlock better when you have a line that needs held.. but not really sure why they changed the color?? Scarier looking I guess

I'm glad you liked it, there are just so many things in old Victor issues that are just brilliant, it's just hard to find a forum where you could upload them without appearing to be random.
