This game "could" have been really good!

Post » Wed Aug 18, 2010 2:18 pm

Much like some, I expected more from BRINK.

Movement Specific: Really feel half fed with the current acrobatics in the game. These are some ideas from other FPS games which would have made things a bit more interesting.

Some of the games include; Jedi Outcast/Academy, Halo Reach, Unreal Tournament, HL1: The Specialists.

Evasive Rolling - Double tap crouch and hold direction to roll while feet on ground
Side Step - Double tap direction to dodge
Wall Hop - As is, just need to be able to do 3 consecutive jumps to allow for wall to wall climbing
Wall Backflip - Jump directly onto a wall then press jump to flip off (Without pressing direction)
Wall Run - Approach any wall diagonally with SMART button
Wall Flip - During wall run or wall hop, press jump and direction to flip off the wall
Superman Dive - Double tap jump
Superman Roll - Hold jump during Superman Dive to roll out of dive.
Flip - While mid-air double tap crouch while holding direction, must be done fast to land on feet otherwise you land on your [censored] and lose momentum.

FPS Game specific:

- First Person Spectator option
- Camera Control in 3rd person spectator
- Suicide (For impatient people who want to spectate when they have been incapacitated)
- Kill Cam (I want to see who bloody killed me)
- Kills and Deaths
- Deathmatch, CTF
- 3rd Person option for SMART movement allowing the screen to change between 1st and 3rd person during acrobatics, (with a 3rd person crosshair to shoot people during stunt)

You know what I mean? :grad:

What is the point of flips? None
You wanna roll to disorientate the gamer? No, plus you can slide already
Want kill cam and turn this into a CoD clone? Not me.
K/D ratio? You know, a lot of people on Brink don't really like that
Deathmatch? To kill or be killed? Did you know, it's already in the game. You're playing deathmatch to get to your objective.
Capture the flag? Play Refuel as Resistance
3rd person view? That will be way harder to control, you know that?

To be honest, more free running moves wouldve made the more complicated than it needed to be. Don't really understand on how flips would improve the gameplay.

Regardless of whether or not the features he listed have been used already or not, the games that use them kept them for a reason. Hate to say it, since i've been following this game for two years now, i believe, but unless there's some massive patching going on, and perhaps some Quality DLC (maps and what have you), I might just be forced to throw in the towel on this one. 8 maps?!? That's sad by any modern FPS standard. And gameplay is pretty standard as well. SMART movement is what saves this game, and when i play other titles i find myself wishing i had it there too, but is SMART a strong enough crutch to hold Brink's weight in the long run? I just don't know.

I don't really think much of that stuff would improve the game any. One thing I think could have been cool is having a 3rd person mode, but I think its just fine without it.

Your so wrong its funny. I wasn't going to bother responding, but since you dirtied my post I have to clean it up...

Flips are stylish, and can make you a harder target to hit. It also increases the skill level for players who want to perform sick moves while shooting enemies. Don't you want to look cool?

Rolling is used by people to break their fall, and to avoid enemy fire, it is also stylish and prevents loss of momentum. Does a roll and a slide perform the same functions? No, you try jump of 2 story building to slide instead of roll... actually don't try that... seriously dont..

Kill Cam = COD clone? Thats exactly what the franchise wants you to believe... Kill cam is just a fancy name for "Replay", this also gives you the ability to see your character... which adds to the game

K/D Ratio lol, back in the day we used to call this KPD - Kills Per Death, Why the hell wouldn't you want to know how many bad guys you took out?

When I say Death Match I say FREE FOR ALL - small map, 1 choke point, 1 winner
When I say Capture The Flag I say Quake World TF 2Fort4 style with 2 bases virtually identical

3rd person control option is only optional, and as far as being harder to control... Assasins Creed is 3rd person... Was that hard to control? It is up to the programmer to make the controls easy.

On another note, the only thing that I think BRINK totally owned other FPS games in is the custom control layout for console, but even then, all PC FPS games allow you to re-bind keys. And the character design.

They deliberately replaced rolling with more slides because it was disorienting to the player and prevented them from firing, which they wanted to avoid wherever possible - there's almost no situation where the functionality of your fire button compromised outside of being incapacitated or dead. Keep the player in control.

You can already use wallhop to rebound over someone's head while firing if you know how the controls work, I'd rather keep this how it currently works than make it a flip, which would, as with rolls, disorient the player doing it.

You get a wallslide which works decently, and the wallhop provides a realistic-feeling wallrun substitute when you're playing as a Light - when you use it in the right situations, it gives EXACTLY the benefit a real-world wallrun does.

The moves seem to work well in a few older games like Jedi Outcast, also The Specialists mod for HL1, it is more for style but also for skill, while the average player is happy to run around shooting like regular FPS shooters the more style focused player would be able to do their thing without upsetting the balance of the game. Watch some Gun Fu style movies and you will know what I mean.

Look, I do parkour and I know how to roll and what it does. But it disorientates a lot of non experienced people, and maybe some with health issues. It's better to be safe than sorry.

Flips are cool and makes you hard to hit, I'll agree to that. But would you rather shoot him down quick, or become hard to hit with a consequence of getting dizzy and that he might anticipate your movement and take you down then.

And by 3rd person controlling, I didn't mean controlling just SMART, I meant controlling SMART and shooting at the same time, that would be mighty impossible.

I was also wonder what would happen to "downed fire" and "cortex bomb" if there is kill cam.

I'm not saying those ideas are bad for games, they're just not the right ideas for THIS game.

You can break your fall in the game by hitting crouch while holding the SMART button as you land already. So the only other reason to roll is already covered by the sliding we have already so the whole rolling thing is moot.
K/D Ratio lol, back in the day we used to call this KPD - Kills Per Death, Why the hell wouldn't you want to know how many bad guys you took out?

because that's completely not the point of the game and anyone who focuses on that is missing the point of the game. Why encourage someone to pick up bad habits? This is a team game where personal stats do not matter. It's about what you did to help your team. The only important stat at the end of the match is the one that says "SUCCESSFUL" or "UNSUCCESSFUL".
When I say Death Match I say FREE FOR ALL - small map, 1 choke point, 1 winner

Again: against the entire point of the game. This is a team game. For FFA try Quake 3.

Assassin's Creed was designed as a 3rd person. Brink is designed as a First person. you can tell because of the F and the P in FPS. You'd need to add all sorts of extra things that would end up detracting from the game just to get 3rd person controls.

The Gameplay is fine, but not fantastic. SMART was the big thing about this game... so comparing this to similar titles that boast free range of movement across all sorts of terrain, BRINK falls short of my expectations.

If making my own game was as easy as you think brutha, I would have made it 8 years ago when I first completed the concept.

The only reason you are settling for what BRINK delivers you is because you haven't played enough variety in games. And developers in the passed haven't taken as many risks.

That's a pretty bold statement right thar. Unless you personally know him/her, you would have no way of knowing how many different games he/she has played.

It's clear that this game fell a bit short in the stylistic department for you Tigerstyler7. Conversely, this game has met/exceeded is that department for others. With that in mind I think we should agree to disagree before things get to heated.

Don't you think the developers are risking this by making a new genre to FPS. Not including deathmatch? Kill cam? Taking away flips? Non realistic graphics? No OHK?

Ok firstly, I'm nearly 30 first FPS game I played was Wolfenstein, then Duke, Doom, Quake, QWTF, HL, CS.... year of experience with different games, also modded for Half Life and Quake 3 engine while doing a "Games development" diploma when I was 16.

You don't need to try and "Educate" me, you are the one who needs a bit of educating if you cannot understand competitive gaming. The competitive nature of video games is what draws people to them, thats why certain titles make it and other titles don't, if you satisfy those needs as well as the ametuer gamer needs you have a good game and a larger community.

So this is why I want to know how many newbs I just owned... geez

3rd person and 1st person games are basically the same, anyone with a bit of game design knowledge knows this. All games are built around an engine, its the engine limitations that prevent certain things from being possible, switching to 3rd person while you do a stunt is basic, I dont know who brainwashed you into thinking this sort of thing is difficult.

I guess some people just don't see outside the box... Besides the code is already there, look at spectator mode, all the needs to be done is camera alignment...

FPS Game specific:

- Kill Cam (I want to see who bloody killed me) No if you werent switched on enough to know where they are shooting from then you shouldnt have the game do it for you
- Kills and Deaths No, K/D encourages stat padding which would ruin an objective based gameplay like Brink. To many people would avoid the objectives to keep up their K/D ratio
- Deathmatch, CTF No, Brink is not about death match, go play COD et al
- 3rd Person option for SMART movement allowing the screen to change between 1st and 3rd person during acrobatics, (with a 3rd person crosshair to shoot people during stunt) No it would ruin imertion whilst playing if you kept flippin in and out of 1st and 3rd person

See my bold

Disagree on almost everything but Run on wall would be really good .... I was hopping to see that it game really ...
But the SMART thing can be improve ! Sometime you can't jump over something, you have to really face of the thing to jump over it (with smart) ... this is really annoying !
(Miiror's edge was way better in the SMART)

But this game is really good ! A big fresh air in FPS !!!

Semething made me laugh my pant off ...

FPS Game specific:
- 3rd Person option for SMART movement allowing the screen to change between 1st and 3rd person during acrobatics, (with a 3rd person crosshair to shoot people during stunt)

lol .... FPS specifi -> 3rd Person option ... don't you see a problem here ? Well ... I do :facepalm:

See ya !

Yes they took a big risk, and upset alot of people who expected everything they promised, problem with overpromise and underdeliver....

They cant claim that they made their own genre... this was all done before with Assault mode on Unreal Tournament.
Was also done with QWTF... while the objectives didn't mix into 1 like UT and BRINK, the objectives were basically invented by modders years and years ago.

Geez, can't you fill in the blanks... 3rd person option explained in detail:

Have a toggle option in control menu to allow for 3rd person dynamic view, which interchanges from 1st to 3rd person perspective automatically when enabled, for the duration of your acrobatic manouver, ie Wall flip... and not 3rd person for basic movement and looking around corners like Rikimaru..

So you're younger than me and haven't played some of the FPSs I have. What's your point? (btw: I think you mean Wolf3D and not wolfenstein otherwise you started late in the game)

So this is why I want to know how many newbs I just owned... geez

Wow. Defensive much? Also: you're wrong. The competative nature is what draws SOME people to them. Some people are drawn to the art. Some people are drawn by the adrenaline. Some people are drawn by the teamwork. If you're just after "owning newbs" then go play a game that is tailored to inflating epeen like COD where you can outrank the newbs and really get your money's worth of ownage.

The engine limitations are not the issue. Anyone with game development knowledge would know that flipping in and out of different viewpoints is confusing to players. And you should also realise that keeping the game locked in 3rd person would require all sorts of other limitations to prevent advantages like being able to look around corners without exposing yourself. Detrimentally adventageous when your opponents are not in 3rd person mode.

I guess some people just don't see outside the box... Besides the code is already there, look at spectator mode, all the needs to be done is camera alignment...

You're right. Some people have blinkers on and believe that their idea is perfect in spite of complete lack of support and massive evidence to the contrary.
