This game could use more scary moments

Post » Wed Jun 30, 2010 11:00 pm

I love this game like it's my baby. Same with Fallout 3, but there's one thing that I realized Fallout 3 has that Fallout New Vegas doesn't. A couple of Scary Moments.

Fallout 3 has the Dunwich Building and the Springvale School. These places scared the crap out of me. Springvale School had the dead kids, Dunwich Building had the ghouls that came out of no where. There were other places to that I can't really think of at the moment.

Even though Fallout New Vegas did try to create some of those moments, like for instance when you are told to go to REPCONN to get rid of the ghouls there and when it's just really dark and all of these ghouls are coming at you from no where. It just didn't have the same scare-factor that I found in Fallout 3.

In a post apocalyptic game with creepy looking creatures ( ghouls, super mutants, centaurs ) you would hope to at least experience one good Scary Moment.

Now I haven't beaten the whole game yet, so there just might be a couple of areas I haven't discovered yet that may creep one out but probably not.

Reminder: WTF moments =/= Scary Moments

I haven't seen too many scary set pieces in the game myself, but there's one thing I noticed. Just walking around the wasteland is scarier than it was in FO3. The Damage Threshold feature bumps the difficulty up a good deal and there's some pretty strong enemies now. I've already merrily paraded into a town just to discover it was burned to the ground, the Giant Scorpions in this game are terrifying (esp. since they still travel in pairs), and I've looted a trailer just to discover I was being closed in on from all directions by raiders in an ambush. Pretty fun; until Boone came around...

I too find traveling the wastelands more difficult but it's not scary. There might be a few WTF moments because things can get very overwhelming but that's still not quite what I meant by scary. By scary I mean kind of like horror, as in you're staring down a dark hall way, you hear creepy noises maybe even some light whispers / screams and you have no idea where the enemies ( what ever they might be ) are, and then they all of a sudden pop up right on the screen and pwn you. That's a scary moment :).

Vault 11.

Vault 11 wasn't scary in a visceral sense. It was utterly horrifying on a psychological level though.

So... You want the sort of cheap scares that made Doom 3 so mediocre? :\

If by mediocre you mean hardcoe then yes! Haha ever played Dead space, Bioshock, F.E.A.R, or even Left 4 Dead? Those games definitely mastered the element of horror.

I know that the Fallout Series was not meant to be a horror but it could have definitely added that element in there! I mean buildings with flickering lights and " cheap scares " definitely add to that, and when I first heard about Fallout, I assumed it would have tons of scary moments in it. ( Of course I never heard of it until Fallout 3 )

Dude... I am the biggest wimp when it comes to scary stuff, and Bioshock is just not scary in the slightest. Resident evil 4 was more scary than Bioshock even.

Nightkin scared the bejeezus out of me. And those dog/scorpion hybrids that are stealthy too.

i probably haven't seen 25% of the game world yet, but i've had at least one good scare :( i forgot the name of the town but it's where you first run into the legion and they've burned it down and hung the people on crosses. when i went into the village hall and forgot to check my radar suddenly these freaking legion hounds charge at me out of the darkness :gun: and i crap my pants! i was on edge the whole time i was in that place and man was i glad to get out of there :)

oh yeah and the first time a nightkin appeared out of nowhere, with a minigun, hiding behind a rock near Novac (the one who'd been killing brahmin) i went out there to scout for anything suspicious - i didn't think i'd find an invisible freakin super mutant!

It could also use more unusual moments.
I regret taking the Wild Wasteland perk.
I've only seen one weird thing and that was at the very beginning of the game near Goodsprings.

I assume when weird stuff is supposed to happen with this perk, you get that " :o ????" notification in the top left corner of the screen.
Only happened once. And I am now level 17 at 28 hours in.

Dead Space terrified me; I had my mother watch as I played it, 'cause I was too scared to play alone. Seriously.

One man against the unknown leaves you with a cold, empty void which, I suppose, is the point. Like the first time you leave Vault 101--I was terrified then, too.
