This game is heavily CPU bound.

Post » Wed Mar 19, 2014 5:57 am

I've got a 4770k at 4.2ghz and 2 7970's at 1150/1600 (ESO does not use xfire yet so only 1 gpu gets used), watercooled. I've also got the G19 keyboard with lcd. I monitor cpu and gpu clocks, temps and loads.

Over the last 3 beta's I have noticed that My gpu load rarely ever peaks at more than 90% usage, hangs around 70-80% mostly while the CPU load is pegged at 100% on one or 2 cores.

What I am saying then is that a 4770k is not enough CPU to power even one 7970 in ESO.

I have only had GPU problems with the beta so far.

My SLI 560ti have been (i think) overheating and cause a driver crash, this has only happend in 1 other game before which was secret world.

In a few days thou im getting a r9 280x and this problem should be gone.

As for my processor im using a I7 920 with a 40%ish overclock to about 3.7ghz, overclocked it to work with planetside 2 which had HORRIBLE CPU optimizations at the time.

Aside from that crash then the game runs perfectly for me.

Well until I tried a keep fight in PVP, then the game dropped to 0.1 fps and crashed as the gate was coming down.

I'm running an i7-950 @ 3.8Ghz with a GTX 570. With max settings and vsync enabled, my fps varied from 45-60, staying at the higher end (55-60) most of the time, with my gpu usage staying around 80-90%, though on occasion it did go higher. Maybe the game's just not optimized to take advantage of beastly builds? But I would think it should take advantage four cores if available. Didn't check that.

I'm sure you're right about the heavy CPU usage, I've seen my frame drop in the PvP zone to 18fps while my GPU is barely breaking a sweat (my 680GTX is running at 53c and not boosting up to turbo speeds) (FYI I see 60fps with my GPU barely breaking a sweat in low populated area's of non PvP zones). I'm sure it's due to my older Quad Core2 Duo clocked @ 3.6Ghz. For most games this processor has had more than enough power and my GPU got taxed. I've seen before in other MMO's a good CPU can be more important than a good GPU. I was trying to hold off upgrading until the fall when Intel is supposed to release some new performance parts.

Likely just optimization is required. Beta builds can be brutal on CPU and GPU especially if the test is running logging in background and your pc ends up reporting far more information than is required at release.

Just a guess though but it will likely only get better over time minus patch day where they break it all over again lol.

Mmos are always more CPU heavy than GPU. I only have a Q6600 clocked at 3Ghz and it does use all 4 core but 1 heavy and the rest at about 40%

I would be more concerned about why the system is only using two cores and not 4. Windows is not set up to use more than 2 cores out of the box.

See this for a safe tweak

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLslSkDB0AM

There is another tweak but that requires a registry hack, and your on your own to find that.

I was monitoring all 8 cores (4 physical and 4 hyperthread) and while 2 cores peaked most of the time the game was definitely using all 4 cores and even some of the hyperthreads. Don't know why some people are only getting 2 core usage?

Edit: The statement that Windows is not set up to use more than 2 cores is total bs. Again, I monitor all 8 cores in realtime on my keyboards LCD and just about everything I do utilizes more than 2 cores. and this is after many upgrades and builds all the way up from a i7920.

Windows 8 supports 4 cores.

  • Open the task manager, select the "performance" tab at the top. Make sure "CPU" is selected in the upper left area.
  • Click on "Open Resource Monitor" at the bottom.
  • Then on the resource monitor, click on the CPU tab at the top.

If it isn't set to use all cores then the easy way to check is open up windows task manager and if you have 2, 4, 8 cores, it will show there. If you don't have the right number then it can be forced via msconfig. To say windows is not set up to use all its available cores is just wrong. Maybe back when xp was out but not since windows 7.

Planetside 2 had this exact same issue. It can take a long time for the devs to figure out how to optimize CPU threading in situations that have 100+ people all doing stuff at the same time. It did eventually get fixed on PS2 so I assume it will here.

i am not well versed in part and performance

but im playing with an AMD Phenom II 1090T processor 3.20ghz and a GTX 670 and everything was silken smooth this beta. I got everything maxed out (draw distance etc.) and i play in 1920x1080

Edit : i should mention i didnt go to pvp this beta so if we are talking about huge massive battle, i didnt see one

This is false and that setting is misunderstood. Out of the box, Windows will use however many cores is available to it. In fact, Windows 7 32-bit supports up to 32 processor cores and Windows 7 64-bit supports up to 256 processor cores. By default, that "Number of Processors" setting is turned off. This is effectively an "Auto" mode. With it off, Windows is unrestricted in the number of cores it can use and so it will use all that is available. That setting is meant to limit the number of processor cores Windows can use in an effort to help troubleshoot performance issues or defective CPUs. Turning that setting on and setting it to the maximum number of cores in the system literally does nothing.

A game being CPU heavy? What's new?

You're overclocking, yourself, so obviously you know this.

What I found interesting was that I recently upgraded from a 7950 to a 780ti, and got worse framerates in the city with the 780ti than I did with the 7950, despite the difference in power between the two being monumental in favor of the 780ti

Anyone here using a gtx 770/780 or the AMD counterparts?

What were you're FPS in Cyrodiil with maxed out setting/draw distance when [censored] really hit the fan?

GTX 570 here and my fps hit 20-30 with heavy action in Crodiil. maxed draw/shadows low/ambient ocl - on/high for render and textures/low particle and the rest

I run a phenom II x6 @ 3GHz and a single AMD Radeon HD 7840, and my cpu load while playing at max settings with teamspeak and an internet browser and winamp (and a few minor processes) is only at around 30-40%. Only time it ever goes higher is when I get that freeze bug that humps it to 100% load for 3-10 seconds, but considering that particular issue is experienced by a good amount of the players, I consider it a minor bug to be worked on.

Not sure how your setup is running your load that high.

With an r9 290 and everything on max including draw distance, 50-70 normally and 20-30 during large battles.

I have an i7 and 32GB of RAM and a gforce 680, I had -0- issues with any of the betas. Everything ran smooooooothly. My wife has an i5 and 8GB of RAM and a much lesser vid card. The game also ran smoothly for her. And both of us running Win 7 64bit. Everything on max.

Look at most of the problems closely. Common hardware issues are with AMD, less than 8GB RAM and some using ATI. Go cheap, expect problems.

Sigh...

On the beta forums, about 90% of those who reported abnormally low fps had nvidia GPU and Intel CPU.

Not that I would count AMD as cheap on the GPU side...

In fact the majority of the problems were specifically on the high end computers, with an I7 and >300$ GPUs.

First of all, thanks for the link. My PC runs 8 cores and I used the video to switch boot to four cores. Is there an advantage to setting default to all 8 cores?
