This game was obviously made for consoles - key binding

Post » Sun Nov 29, 2015 11:05 pm

Look, I like this game. I like it a lot. The world is very immersive and fun to explore. The voice-acting is great, and there are many other good things it has to offer. This coming from a hardened and jaded gaming veteran. I've played Bethesda games since Morrowind, and spent countless hours exploring their game-worlds. I've even created some mods myself.

However, it is quite obvious that this game was made for consoles, and very rushed for the PC. The key bindings are an absolute disaster and are ruining the game for some people that would otherwise be enjoying themselves after spedning their hard-earned money. I'm aware of the auto-hotkey fix, and am using it, though not happily. If it weren't for that fix my game would be completely unplayable. I've used ESDF for the last 15+ years and I'm not about to stop. It made it playable, but still quite annoying. There are still plenty of people with setups that can't be fixed by auto-hotkey. There is absolutely no excuse for this, and just goes to show that the people who ported this console game to the PC have zero clue when it comes to PC gaming.

am I the only one, that is actually able to adapt to the way games work?

I play some games with the arrow keys, some with WASD, some even with a controller...

Fallout's default key's are alright and very playable imo

the only annoying thing was the mouse acceleration, but that was an easy .ini fix

I hate how reload and "loot all" are bound to the same key... I can't count how many times I've furiously tapped R to crank my musket in the middle of an intense firefight only to unintentionally loot every dead raider around me.

I also remember unintentionally throwing a grenade/molotov at my face when I meant to bash the ghoul in front of me.

I guess I'm lucky, I've been using WASD for like 20+ years. I rarely change keybindings on any games I get.

(with FO4, I rebound the Pip-Boy shortcuts back to F1-F4, like they were in Fallout 3.)

Only thing that's a bit annoying so far is the massively-over-functioned Alt key. I've thrown too many grenades when I went to Hold Breath quicker than my mouse finger went back to aiming, and done too many melee attacks when I wanted to throw a grenade....

:lmao: That's hilarious ... I was just playing it and thinking, "Man, this game was obviously made for PC's using a mouse and keyboard.".

I'm running it on a PS4. There is one thing I wish they would do and if I could ever figure out how to officially request it with the company, I would.

It would be great to be able to get out of work benches for armor, weapons, computer terminals, etc. etc. with just one tap of the touchpad button rather than having to hit mash 'O' a bunch of times and then 'X'. It's how you exit 'build' mode at settlements.

You can do that? Then why haven't i?
But yes, changing the bindings back to what they were in F3, so no problem with the controls. I'm just too used to WASD and QWERTY to consider anything else ^_^
Though i resisted the change to WASD back in the day :hehe: Got used to playing Doom with the arrow keys.

However, yes, this PC port is unusually half-assed for Bethesda.

Though to troll a bit: :P
I don't understand how anyone can have trouble with the general purpose key.
Press: melee attack.
Hold: grenade.
Scoped: hold breath.
How can you mix those up?
I actually like that there are multiple functions in a single easy to reach key.

Sprint being toggle on/off is what really annoys me. It just makes movement much more clumsier.

Also, it would be nice if you were able to assign multiple things under one quick-key and then choose the thing you want by pressing that quick-key multiple times, like in Half-Life. Doesn't work with consumables though.

Fifteen years ago, in Quake 3, you could bind every action to any key you wanted to, and set up your own custom binds for any command in the game. It's just inexcusable tbth in this day and age.

For those asking if I can get used to it, of course I could. However I've played every other PC game with my own set up for the last 15+ years. I shouldn't have to get used to a new config because of lazy and incompetent development.

I did not change any keybindings and they work for me. The only issue is I have a habit of throwing a grenade point blank range, I fixed that by not using the bash key and switching to a melee weapon in close range fighting.

This also goes with Xbox One since I have both the PC and Xbox one versions.

Wait, you use ESDF? Why, might I ask? I can't remember using anything but WASD since, I don't know, the Wolfenstein era of pc gaming.

That reminds me of how much I miss playing first person games with anolog joystick and mouse. I really wonder why Beth dropped this option after Oblivion.

Aside from the annoyance of holding Alt to throw grenades, you can no longer use them in VATS.

I know some MMO/pvp/action game players will move it to ESDF so that they have more hotkeys in a circle around movement, to assign dozens of other commands to (QWAZX, RTGVC, plus ctrl-, shift-, and alt- for each of them.)

Me, I've never been that pro at MMOs, I generally just use hotkeys 1-8 for common abilities, and mouse-click the rest. It helps that I don't pvp (and therefore don't need to have access to 1-2 dozen reactionary abilities at all times).

As a lefty mouse user, I use IJKL with H for activate. Except for those parts of the game where E is still activate. Except for those parts of the game where on screen it says "Press E to craft an item" but I actually have to hit H.

I hit P to reload and to put away my weapon, but I have to remember not to do that too close to a sleeping figure because P is also the Sandman Kill button.

And don't get me started on why I can't just use the number keys to sell a certain number of items.

Not really a big deal to me. I remapped movement to the arrow keys, crouch to the period on the number pad, and vcats to V. The rest I'm not all that concerned about
