SOCIALIST REPUBLIC OF NEW AMERICA
OVERVIEW: The Republic is officially a socialist nation under the leadership of John Smith a charismatic Nashville born citizen. The Republic used to be a democratic state but under internal economic pressure it collapsed and a power vacuum was created, which was filled by a totalitarian state. The state is largely industrialised and has just arrived on the scene in southern area near the Louisiana Republic and Mississippi Alliance. The state of the government is a highly nationalist totalitarian state. Patriotism is held in very high regard. The leader wields absolute power, and assigns the leaders to all heads of government positions.
GENERAL INFORMATION:
Population: 625,000
Standing Army: 15,000
Currency: Republic Dollars
HISTORY: 70 years before the present day, 2230, New Nashville was founded under the leadership Eric Layton. The town began to reindustrialise, small workshops were setup that produced a wide variety of goods, and the river and nearby lakes and small forest provided the lumber to setup a town of nearly a thousand people. In a matter of years the immediate area began to join the town of New Nashville. Raiders were pushed out of the area, or joined becoming the first security forces for the small area.
The surrounding areas became large swaths of farmland and ranch’s and trade began between the city of New Nashville and neighbouring city states of Memphis and Chattanooga. This point had been 20 years since the founding of the city, and on the 4th of September 2181, Memphis, now a large industrial town and Chattanooga, the breadbasket and main lumber supplier, of the Republic integrated with New Nashville which was renamed to Nashville. The first real election since the founding occurred and Jeremiah Miller was elected to be the first Chancellor of the Republic. He adopted very expansionist and imperialistic policies.
The Republic began to send settlers south towards what was thought to be the ruins of Birmingham and Atlanta. Raiders and a large organised government were encountered and they plagued the entire force in its approach to the south. By 2186 the settlers began to organise themselves into militias in order to stop the raids and destruction of the new settlements. An ethnic cleansing of sorts began as the locals indiscriminately slaughtered advancing settlers. Under internal pressure, Jeremiah Miller was forced out of office and was replaced by Lucas Antony whose policies were basically the creation of an organised military force to “clean up the catastrophe” that was the settlement of the south.
The industrial complex of the Memphis area began producing military equipment from pre-war schematics. An army was raised and sent to Birmingham and began “cleaning up” the area, countless people died in the massacres and all who did not agree with the Republics rule fled even farther south. The locals in the Atlanta area upon hearing tales of what happened to the Birmingham population began to try to raise their own militias in defence of their territory. After a few skirmishes with the savage and merciless army they retreated and eventually surrendered to the superior force.
In the year 2190 the army that had originally come to conquer the south became the first successful settlers of the area and bolstered the population. In the coming years Birmingham and Atlanta would become important cities in the Republic.
By 2200 the city of Knoxville had grown to that of immense power and wealth, it was the envy of the entire Republic. The town had an abundance of fresh water, industry and capable farms. Knoxville quickly integrated with the Republic fearing that it would be attacked by the more powerful Republic.
By 2210 The Republic was trying to expand north to Louisville where they were bogged down in a war against multiple city states and warlords from the region. Eventually it began to become a losing battle and the enemy forces pushed right down to within miles of Nashville. All their good territory in Kentucky was lost, and much damage was done to the area between Knoxville and Nashville, due to destruction of caravans, same for the route between Nashville and the Memphis area. Isolationist economic policies and lack of stopping the warlord which had practically settled in their lands caused the powerful Republic to collapse back into divided city states in 2219.
In 2223 John Smith reunited the Nashville area, the small armies that were raised defeated multiple warlords, and the rest swore allegiance to the republic fearing destruction at the hands of advanced military. The warlord armies were turned into a stable fighting force and were used to move forth and begin reoccupying the Chattanooga area. Knoxville and Memphis though technically still part of the Republic swore their allegiance again and began to repay taxes. His newfound power was brought about by contacting strange peoples that came from St. Louis. At the current state John Smith is in the process of industrialising the battered and weakened areas of the Republic and then re-arming and conquering the old territories of Birmingham and Atlanta.
ECONOMY and TRADE: In the 7 years since John Smith has raised to the top the industry and economy has been completely revitalised by what had been practically a small dark age. The economy of the nation is that of a planned economy with a main focus on industry. They trade with nearby nations by selling goods, weapons and raw materials to merchant companies. They buy other raw materials they need from other nations as well as external merchant companies.
Highway 40 leads from Knoxville through Nashville and all the way to Memphis. It has practically been turned into a super highway and practically all of the trade foes through this road. Highway 24 is something of 40’s little brother it has been refurbished but only so that material wealth can be easily transported out of Chattanooga. The 65, highway runs from Nashville to Birmingham, the 22 highway runs from Memphis to Birmingham, and the 59 runs to Chattanooga. The highway 20 is being devoloped so that transport can occur between Birmingham and Atlanta
Nashville the nation’s capital itself is quite a powerful city. It is the head of the government, all state run merchant companies and headquarters of all operations are run here. Nashville itself boasts quite a large industrial complex; however it is mostly civilian in nature. Outside of the city limits is general farmland and small towns.
Birmingham: The town of Birmingham was recently reclaimed and the areas industry was put back online. The factories here are where most of the heavy equipment comes from. Vehicles, farming machinery, all the big stuff is constructed here. As well this is the place where the aircraft are constructed and is home to an airfield. The city is also home to the major research projects and laboratories of the Republic.
Knoxville is an incredibly important city in the nation, it has incredible amounts of natural resources, and quite some coal, and large swaths of farmland due to the huge river systems located around it. These river systems are also the location of multiple hydro dams that generate electricity for the nation. The coal mined here is used in generators to produce electricity.
Chattanooga is the nation’s number one supplier of lumber, as well as being one of the main places where water is exported from. However it is not quite as important as other parts of the Republic.
Memphis and the surrounding area is the main city for industry. It produces most of the product that is used in the military, expansion and other complicated equipment for the nation. As well is boasts a river a running right through it, though this is mainly used to support the large population that the city has running its workshops and factories.
The Breadbasket is the area between Knoxville, Nashville and Chattanooga. It is where most of the farms and ranches are located that provide the nation with the food required to power its civilian population and military and expansion forces.
South of Knoxville but north of Atlanta is one of the main sources of mineral wealth and other natural resources for the nation. This area is referred to as the Nantahala and Chattahoochee forests.
MILITARY: The military has been revitalised since John Smith came to power, he has begun to rebuild the industrial complexes, and modernise the nation. This has allowed the nation to produce its own military equipment and its army has become more organised, it has all the capabilities, food supplies, natural resources, manpower.
