"This MMO is not enough like WoW"

Post » Fri Mar 21, 2014 11:42 pm

Love these guys. These are the same dudes that flocked to the very-WoW-like SWTOR and Rift and said "This is too much like WoW, if I wanted WoW, I'd play WoW" and then left in droves.

For one Im glad one AAA MMO finally tried to do something different. This is a pro-community, pro-play your own way, pro-exploration, non-number crunching, non-ilvl-elitist, non-UI takes up 95% of the screen, non-sit in the main city and queue for everything MMO.

Grats for sticking to your guns, now lets have an awesome launch!

I think you're confused. The complaints are exact opposites.

It sounds like you know very little about the game... but I'll let you figure it out on your own. Something tells me you wouldn't listen even if I tried to inform you.

I've played 3 betas. People on this forum want arenas, battlegrounds, huge wow-type raids, heavy modding, and classes. ESO will not give that to them and that's a good thing.

Actually, they left SWTOR in droves because they managed to hit 'endgame' before the developers had anything set up for endgame.

But that's an issue with WoW-likes in general, so I can't say you're completely wrong.

We all have to just wait and see how successful ESO will be. When Blizzard first release WoW it was great and fun game until they ruined it. Not sure how roleplaying will be carry out, esp with all those players roaming around. There still more than 50% landscapes still need to fill in, so would have to wait another six months to a year for next expansion.

The way i see it, probably be around two-three expansions and if they arent doing well in the first twelve months, it may ended up Free-to-Play while buying craps like other MMOs. I am hoping they keep it as it is for 14.99 a month, but no more.

This mmorpg is just like WoW actually. Even the questing which was supposed to be different. Instead of hubs you have POIs in the map. The skill system is the only unique thing worth mentioning but it is nothing special as you get enough points to pretty much specialize in everything combat-wise.

Truth is I only bought this because I am a TES f a nboy, like ZOS has planned.

I think I know what you're trying to say, perhaps you were just a little convoluted in your delivery. Let's hope they (development) stick to their resolve and maintain TES's identity in this game, especially re the UI and floating over-head names etc etc.

For, as Coco Chanel once poignantly said:

“In order to be irreplaceable, one must always be different.”

I think the point he's trying to make is that this type of MMO player will complain about how the game compares to WoW no matter which path the developers take; which I totally agree with.

Example:
"Uh I hate that you have to grind in this (other, non-ESO) game, grinding is not fun! This game is a WoW clone!"

"OMG they've nerfed grinding in ESO! Grinding is my favourite past time! Why haven't they made it more like WoW!"

OPTIONS is what makes great MMOs, WOW is not the best it just had a huge advantage over nearly every other MMO of the time and some more recent aswell because they already had millions of players in their fanbase as subs that were MMO virgins.

If you took away all of those numbers of never tried anything else to compare WOW to players it would be similar to the other titles, And as we know peoples first time MMO most stay till it dies or it does something to loose them.

SWG didn't lose players to WOW SOE killed SWG and left a large number of people that didn't ever want to be so affected by a game again and WOW was perfect and simple.

DAoC at the same time killed their large player base with their TOA expansion again people left because of what mythic did and WOW was just one of the benificarys

It does show how quickly you can loose everything with poor descion making and ignoring your customer base to drasticly change a game.

ESO already seems to be looseing the play how you want part of their motto.

I don't think most people are wanting WoW, it's just the simple MMO stuff that's missing in ESO.

And with addons people don't need to download them so everyone is happy.... problem is some of that is disabled now with the api change.

I think most people will be happy if they just allow buffs and debuffs to be shown again. Re-allow that in the UI and think both groups will be happy.

I see posts all the time, tired of wow or some other game, want something different, then when something different comes around, they complain this is not what we wanted, it's not like game xxxx, which lends to my own theory that a lot of people do not know what they want, and some times I fall into the crack myself..LOL

I feel whilst ZOS certainly taking sways from the paths of games like WoW, they certainly are not straying too far away.

Of course don't fool yourself into thinking there isn't going to be elitism and min/maxers in TESO because there certainly will be, we've seen that already with people refusing to play particular races because racial skills often reflect archetypes of particular gameplay styles more so that others - all that BS.

Exploration is something you'll find a hell of a lot more rewarding that in a game like WoW, not all quests start off in towns and the like, however there is obviously a population mass in towns and cities so quests will definitely pop up there as well.

"non-UI takes up 95% of the screen", indeed. It's actually quite funny reading MMO gamers react to there like a vampire to sun. DPS meters apparently mean they can't do their job.

This is the first MMO ever that actually made me wanna explore the world completely, even without a strong incentive to do so.

WoW vanilla wasnt far from achieving this but now the game is unbareable to even think about. (I stopped playing WoW completely about 6 months before WOTLK)

It's not as much as people want this, it's that people were told these would be features.

Yea that's very true. Wasn't there a 'give us arenas' post the other day that started with them saying they were tired of WOW but basically wanted this game to become that one, just with better graphics?

WOW isn't going anywhere, it's still there and it'll still be there after ESO launches. It's ok to say you like that game and play it. There's no need to try to recreate the wheel here.

And they changed their minds. Developers do that from time to time, and they're perfectly entitled to do that if they feel their game isn't moving in the right direction. Obviously these changes are going to upset some people, but that's the way it is; it can't be helped.

It sounds like the poor press impressionists have won this round with 'This isn't Skyrim Online', so they are giving them Skyrim Online. I'm seriously starting to question ZOS and their capability of making the 'game they want to make' since they are SO wishy washy on major features of the game. Maybe they are under too much pressure to carry on the franchise title ES and that's why.......dunno.

EDIT: Not to mention we are 8 days out from early access (soft) launch.

EDIT2: The inclusion of arenas is actually the worst news I've heard for this game. Arenas are IMO a horrible feature that only cater to a select crowd and directly affect me as a PvE player.

The OP is correct in stating that people shouldn't complain about the areas where ESO diverges from Wow, just as the people who are stating the game follows WoW very closely are correct as well.

At level 5 in the beta my heart sank, I was hoping ESO would lead the MMORPG off into a bold new direction. Instead I felt like I was beta testing a new graphics engine for WoW. I was pretty sure I was going to take a pass on ESO. Yet, I've pre-ordered the game and am anxiously awaiting launch because although ESO is indeed eerily similar to WoW in many aspects, as pointed out by the OP, it also diverges from WoW in many aspects as well.

It appears to me that ESO is more focused on being an immersive adventure based role playing game than an action based arcade game with role playing elements. How well they pull that off remains to be seen. I played a lot of different characters in the beta so I didn't get much past 10 on any one character. There is a huge breadth in build choices, if nearly any build choice is viable in the end then I feel they will have pulled it off. However, if they pull it off, people looking for the action arcade style end game of WoW where only seriously hard core players have access are going to be sorely disappointed and will be screaming end game content needs to be tuned for min/max so that they can sit on the bank steps and show off their trophy raid mounts.

Either way, a bunch of people are going to be disappointed. If they try to please both crowds, everyone is going to be disappointed.
