This old game...

With the release of Fallout and New Vegas I know that people aren't playing Oblivion as much as before (Obviously) But now and then, I like to come back and play this game because in 4 words Oblivion is: The best game ever. :obliviongate:

I don't consider games that are 4 years old actually old, so yeah I still play it since it's good.

( I can just as easily play Morrowind and 10 years old games like Deus Ex)

I played chess recently. Some games never age.

When a game has endless content due to mods and achievements/trophies (on consoles) add enough replayability as it is then this 'old' game will continue to be played for years to come. Pretty much until the next elder scrolls, if it ever does get developed and released.

If you find a 4 year old game old, I fear to hear what you would call Arena...

But yes, Oblivion is an awesome game, and no game since can really stack up to it.

NetHack is, in essence, over 20 years old, and it's by far the most re-playable game ever made, in my humble opinion.

I started playing Oblivion after a long pause myself just recently, and I'm still enjoying it, especially with some new mods I'm trying out. I probably wouldn't compare Oblivion to chess in timelessness, though :)

At any rate, I kinda feel that the further the gaming industry evolves, the more it shortens the lifespan of new games. There aren't many games made in the last 10 years or so that I'm still excited to get into even after months or years of playing. A bigger number of older games, however, seem to hold that magic. Maybe it's nostalgy combined with the primitive appeal of games that are simpler and just plain fun, I don't know.

It is interesting to note that so many people seem to be looking for "the next big thing" in games rather than enjoying something they enjoy. I've tried Fallout 3, many console games and a handful of MMOs, but I still go back to Oblivion. That being said, I still go back and play Super Metroid frequently, too. :) Being "new" does not necessarily mean that it will be "good", and by extension, being "old" does not mean something is "bad".

Indeed.. MW:BO has the industry in a spin atm.. and for what? its nothin but a generic, ten for a penny corridor shooter.

however games like shadowman, soul reaver, san andreas.. I remember them fondly from the ps2 era. I honestly think the days of the ps2 were the best for gaming.

games which were once unique (resident evil, splinter cell) have devolved into over the shoulder *sigh*... shooters.

originality is dying because developers are pandering to the legions of 14 year old ADD wrestling fans who can only run and shoot things with a big gun.

and yeah, for this reason oblivion still shines. And all that interests me in future is the next TES game. Bethesda have raised the bar to high.. other games just sort of svck in comparison.

I don't touch a game until it has had plenty of time to get reviewed, critiqued, debugged, patched, modded, wiki'd and every glitch sorted out.

Then if the game sings to me (as Oblivion has for the last 3+ years), I stay there for a very looonnng time. I figure I will be perfectly happy in Oblivion for several more years. After TES 5 has been out for a year or two, I'll see if my character might be interested in it.

I'm replaying Ob instead of NV because I didn't want another FO that frankly for me would just feel like an expansion. The first time I skipped most of the caves, forts, ruins because i thought they were all randomly generated each tine you entered. This time I picked an optimal build for everything and am trying for almost 100% completion. Not really but nearly. It's just awesome. Plus it runs great and NV has bugs. Will play NV later or just wait for elder scrolls V which I know will come. But not until successor to 360. I play PC btw

One of the better games I've played, I can never call any game the best because I play different ones and they are all good for different reasons.

Old game? Oblivion? Oblivion came out in 2006. It's barely been out four years. I was already an advlt when it came out. I vividly remember the first day I played it. It just hasn't been that long ago on my personal time scale. Maybe to some of you younger players four years is a long time but I guess my attention span works differently since I was born in the early 80's. I would consider games like Super Mario World old (but still very playable!)

I might be a bid of an odd ball here. I started with FO3 actually and had never played a TES game before (/shame). I actually avoided the game due to its first person view (played FO3 in third) and because I thought the characters and races looked horrible. My nephew was a big fan of it and constantly nagged me about playing. After a while I found myself checking out TESNexus, saw lots of good race mods, third person view mods, and other things and finally decided to give it a shot.

It pretty much instantly became my favorite game of all time. I did try out NV, finished one play through and went right back to Oblivion. :D Still trying to get myself into Morrowind though. I can't seem to get out of the starter town without losing interest.

Because nuclear holocaust isn't all fun and games? :)

No, but really, I see your point, my first glance at each of the games in the Fallout franchise (except FO2, maybe) evoked mainly shudders of minimalism, but after the games svcked me in, the more decayed the world looked the better. Fallout: New Vegas has several settings that are less ravaged by the apocalypse, such as Jacobstown and several locations in Vegas itself that, while they serve their individual purposes well and are not in any way out of place in the game, still momentarily break the immersion of the environment destroyed by a nuclear holocaust. In short, when I play a game where I'm supposed to be wandering the wastes of a post-apocalyptic America, I expect it to really feel like that. I wouldn't be too thrilled if Fallout games looked like scenes from Edward Scissorhands.

[EDIT] Sorry for going so blazingly off-topic :P

Actually, since it came out in March of 2006, it's over 4 1/2 years old now, and is the first RPG of this console generation. There are far older games out there, but getting close to half a decade old makes Oblivion a bit old by modern technological and gaming standards (not my own, but just in general) .

Whe nI read the title, I thought someone was writing a critique (positive or negative) about ARENA or DAGGERFALL... I have savegames stored from both.

Oblivion is excellent, yes, and as somone put it, I just adventure in it once it has been patched / debugged enough. That's due to my Daggerfall trauma (which I can say now became an addiction), in those days, when you were lucky if you could play 10 minutes without a crash.

Granted, O was probably light years ahead in terms of fucntionality, comparison-wise, when released.

Modern technological standards are part of what is wrong with gaming today.

Honestly if they'd just continued to release expansion after expansion using the Oblivion engine that would have been a fine game that could have held my interest for over a decade.

I'm not anti graphics by any stretch. I simply observe the problems inherent in the standard for games always being to "out shiny" the previous entry in a series.

I agree entirely. I get a little angry at the comments directed towards New Vegas involving the graphics being too dated.
