This really Grinds my Gears

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 12:04 am

Do you want skillful, fun, and balanced gameplay design or do you want statistical, satisfying, and involved XP grinding?

The following is what I think about this, and you should vote and/or comment BEFORE reading what follows...

I hate this stupid xp grind. Whatever happened to making the most brilliantly-designed, puzzle-perfect, and highly-skillful imaginable?
The next chess can't exist because people obsess over their fake accomplishments in XP, achievements, and character or weapon skins
that require grinding to earn. Are you really proud to spend 50 extra hours avoiding true fun just to increase some numbers and change a few symbols?
Stop obsessing over this pointless, easy bs and enjoy things as they are. The highest intelligence and skill, the best gameplay design, the best players
enjoy this. /rant

I hear ya. People complain that "they already got to level 20, and have unlocked all the achievements. I've done everything this game has to offer within two days." Can't just appreciate a good game they have to "unlock" something or another.

Yeah i miss the days where all you would get is some sort of gun and some ammo and maybe a vehicle depending on what game you play... that's it, no perks, no abilities, no unlocking.... The thrill came from winning and killing your evenly matched opponent. But hey, what can ya do. this is the new age of games, where every game, not just RPG's anymore, use Xp to "level up". lol... And TONS of handicaps are given to less skilled players.

I hate grinding. Never liked MMORPGs because of that. It's becoming clearer and clearer that BRINK is attracting far too many Call of Duty kids* than BRINK can handle.
What about Legacy FPSes in the hall of gaming? Counter Strike, for example, is the world's most played game and has held that position for many a year! It has absolutely no character progression, and only got achievements months ago. If all these people say that low character progession will kill a game, why hasn't Counter Strike died years and years ago?

*(disclaimer: I'm not saying they're all kids. But the majority of Xbox 360 gamers agree that die-hard CoD fans are 360 kids.)
*(disclaimer 2: I'm not saying kids are immature or crap or anything. I'm 15, so I'd be talking trash about myself.)

We need more complexity in games. Obviously, some of the things you mentioned weren't used correctly. Perks are just passive abilities which can be anything and organized in any way to be used. Having a variety of abilities, active and passive, is very nice. You could consider guns and grenades abilities. It's anything that doesn't fit perfectly in as puzzle-perfect a design as possible which focuses on skill and intelligence. We should be able to accomplish advanced mathematician-level puzzles and professional juggler-level skills if we enable all the features. Cheap, fake accomplishments won't get us this satisfaction, but well-used game elements will.

It comes from the unlock mentality. Why should a player have to unlock something? There are other ways to earn achievements. I've always though unlocking something is dumb. At work does your boss tell you that since you have repeated x number of actions that now you have unlocked the ability to wear some meaningless belt or pants?

No, but at a job you do earn money (EXP) and use it to buy something (an unlock); so it is kinda the same as leveling up. But I agree kinda, I like feeling like I am earning something and that other than winning I am working towards a goal. However, I'm not going to stop playing a good game just because I have unlocked everything. I have every achievement in Mass Effect 2, but I still play it because I love that game. I have a level 20 and all but 3 or 4 achievement in this game, but I enjoy it and am going to continue playing it for fun.

I think that is why I prefer the earning (money) credits with the ability to spend them on items. Unlocks are just too "gamey" or artificial for me. Althyough in Mass Effect 2 I maxed out the character level and it just seems unfinished that I have a skill (Cryo) that only have on box in it. I hate level caps.

That is against the forum rules, and could get this topic locked.

I'm confused as to if you agree with me or if you are contradicting me.
