Is this "stealing" from other games?

Post » Fri Dec 11, 2015 1:48 am

For Fallout 4 mods on consoles, Bethesda says they will not allow things pormographic or stolen from other games. However, would a mod be considered "stolen from another game" if it was generated by a mod kit from another Bethesda game? For example, would they allow people to generate content from the Skyrim Creation Kit or the Fallout 3 GECK and import it into Fallout 4?

Short answer is YES! Beth would think of it as stealing!!!!

There EULA specifically states that assets from even there games can not be ported to another one of there games.

Now if it's Porting User made content that Beth or there subcontractors didn't create, then that's a different story.

Yes. Think of it this way, you are taking content from a game they made, and giving it to other people who may not have bought that game.

Only way around that would be a scripted installer, that takes files from the users computer. Think tale of two wastelands (which merged fallout new vegas and fallout 3)

While keeping in mind that TTW isn't something Bethesda has expressed approval for, so....

If the Skyrim or Fallout 3 mod was originally created by you or if you have the original creator's express permission, it would not be considered stealing.

No, making a Mod for another game and then use its content in Fallout couldn't be considered stealing, but it could still be considered copyright breach by the original creator, if you don't have permission.

TTW as mod you download doesnt include anything from Fallout 3.

The needed content gets generated from the original Fallout 3 game that the mod user has to own.

So actually not a license agreement breach.

Still I agree that it is a bit of a grey area.

That's the thing though, it would fall under conversion from another game, and Bethesda has expressly prohibited that sort of thing. So I'm not sure you could really call it a grey area.

They did allow it for um stalker I believe? And that was a direct cut from another game (with that publishers permission). Or at the very least Beth didn't complain about it. Probably from the bad publicity, it'd give.

Unfortunately the lack of a complaint isn't good enough :P More likely that they just didn't know.

I can't find where the post is at right now but they gave a pretty definitive official statement on cross-porting assets between games that came down pretty much against it entirely.

What sort of mods *would* you be able to port just as a .esp? Without using anything generated outside of the Skyrim CK?

Aside from whether it is allowed, do you guys think is easily possible to take for example creatures from skyrim and put them into fallout 4? What about room model pieces from fallout 3? Would you need to do anything to the models in a modeling program to make it work?

Technically possible ... yes ... but it's not easy ... so don't expect Skyrim or FO3 working in the FO4 engine. Even meshes only.

For a long while, the STALKER license wasn't owned by anyone due to its Dev team disbanding. The Dev team restored itself recently and they seemingly have the license again, so I doubt Beth would be that forgiving.

All in all, taking from other games is a big no-no for Beth. Several mods just converted the files from Beth's other games and they still forbade it (and you had to own all the games, so they don't care about it either).

If you want to have something from another game, you will have to remake it from the scratch so it officially only looks like it. And I am not 100% on that either.
