This is the 2nd time now that I had to uninstall and reinsta

Post » Fri Sep 03, 2010 11:34 pm

Yes, I found out that my mods just weren't even installed the right way and a number of them were actually in sub-folders where they just didn't even belong! And also, when my game was fairly modded before I've had major graphical issues prompting me to uninstall and reinstall, I would hear my disc-drive working really hard and being quite noisy at times. (Yes I have a 32 bit Windows Vista PC, and yes I installed my game into a separate folder separate from the default folder!)

So I'm not even sure if (all along) my PC can even handle a fairly modded Oblivion or not with some of the larger mods like Midas Magic, Nascosto Isles, The Lost Spires, Elsweyr Deserts of Anequina, Tales from Elsweyr, Unique Landscapes, Onra's coming heightmaps, and a number of major land extension/extra land mods and large major clothing/weapons/spells/hair/body mods.

Here's my DXDiag! So please tell me if my PC can safely a fairly modded Oblivion with mostly large mods (those in the 50 megabyte plus range)!?

When you have the utilities installed; Wrye Bash, OBMM, BOSS and OBSE, backup your entire Bethesda Softworks folder to the desktop etc.
Saves you a LOT of time. Trust me. Vista is crap >:(

Why, exactly, did you reinstall the game? Unless you needed the original files for some reason, that is not usually a necessary action. Anyway... Your CPU is not great. "Heavily-modified" is relative, but if you are thinking along the lines of FCOM+++, then that would be push. What you listed sounds all right though. That is not really what I consider a killer list, but I would not be looking for one with those specs. Getting a sound card would help out your CPU considerably (which is true of basically any setup.) That system's bottleneck is definitely the processor though...

Edit: I agree with Gimhad about Vista, and, what I really forgot to add, that codec list does not look Oblivion-friendly. It looks like a nice field for CTDs...

Yes, a sound card can be beneficial. But one must be careful here. Not all sound cards are created equal. What you want for gaming is a card with dedicated sound acceleration in hardware. These days that pretty much limits you to the Creative Labs Soundblaster line (X-fi being the current model line, though I believe the older Audigies are still sold). And not even all X-fi cards have the desired accelerator chip. The cheapest models rely on software emulation, providing the quality and flexibility of the more expensive cards but without their CPU relief.

But if you are thinking to upgrade (and you don't mention it) a better CPU might well provide more bang for the bucks. Check your motherboard's support site and see which CPUs it accepts. As inexpensive as AMD processors are, you might find yourself pleasantly surprised. Or not. And you'll prolly need to be comfortable with doing BIOS updates, since an older motherboard generally needs to be updated to recognize newer CPUs.

I've ran Oblivion on both Vista and Windows 7, and am in the minority in not disliking Vista. It had/has its faults, but is not the monster some claim it to be. It has no inherent issues with Oblivion, assuming one knows what to avoid during initial installation (i.e., don't install Oblivion into the default directory).

As to your running Oblivion mods in general, be careful of too much eye candy, which can put an extra strain or system resources. (All but the lightest application of RAEVWD, for instance, would likely be a bit much for you.) Installing lots of mods that add mobs and NPCs can eventually result in A.I. overload issues. That's not to say you can't add eye candy and more mobs/NPCs. You just have to be more careful with it than someone with a quad-core 3.4ghz CPU, 6-8gb of ram and a high-end graphics card.

As to mod installation errors, those are almost always solvable, the exception being two (or more) mods designed to provide the same function and not meant for use with any other like mod. In those cases you simply need to decide which alternative best meets your needs and stick with it.

So that means that mods such as most Unique Landscapes, the Elsweyr Deserts of Anequina mod, the upcoming Onra Heightmaps mod, and a host of others I had before were just too powerful for my PC to handle? Looks like I may have to settle for Old-Blivion based on my PC specs! :(

What you explicitly listed sounds playable. You do not have an oldblivion PC.

Edit: Also, my SB Audigy 4 was definitely a help, and that is not a new, flashy card. You do not have to go out and spend $200 on a new processor if you are not ready to buy one. That would require a MOBO upgrade, and maybe even a RAM upgrade as well.

Aye, what Tomlong says. I did not, in my first entry, mean to imply that you can't run those mods you mention. Just that you can not expect to run as many eye-candy type mods as someone with a more powerful system. Nor was my comment about a possible CPU upgrade (assuming you contemplate any sort of hardware upgrade) intended to imply that you need a major investment in new gear. My point was/is that your current motherboard might well accept a newer, more sophisticated and powerful CPU with nothing more than a (free) BIOS update. That might be more economical (and provide better overall results) than investing in a decent quality sound card. There is of course every chance that your motherboard might not accept any CPU worth upgrading to. It's worth a look-see in any case, again assuming you contemplate upgrading at all.

Tomlong's Audigy 4 is a fine sound card, and indeed has a dedicated hardware acceleration chip to relieve CPU workload. My original point here is that a great many cheap add-on sound cards lack hardware acceleration. They provide definite improvements over most motherboard-chip sound solutions, but don't really help gaming FPS all that much.

How I miss the days of Aureal in the late 90s/2000...a company that made sound cards that were better than Creative's. They were based in Australia if I remember correctly, and their 3D sound tech was used by NASA. For some reason they folded.

For the few days I ran this game on Vista 64, it ran ok. Vista isn't so much crap that people say it is IF you build your system for it properly.
Like people have told me, go to Tomlong's linked guide in their sig, look at the system requirements, tweaks, and other Oblivion info.

So basically my PC's specs would fall somewhere inbetween the games minimum system requirements and recommended system requirements? I just don't even know anymore! Maybe I am better off just playing Oblivion with only small mods that only adds in a few small things! :( (Looks like no more UL and Anequina for me! :( )

(Looks like I'll have to make a post in the Hardware and software section!)

Where did you get this from? Your system's specs definitely surpass the recommended specs for Oblivion. We are talking about mods here, and your system is fine for running mods too. We are only saying that you have a CPU bottleneck which would prevent you from running many mods or CPU-intensive mods smoothly.

I don't think anyone is telling you that you cannot run the mods you're currently wanting to run, only that you need to be smarter about how you run them. You need to read up on good mod installation procedures, pay attention to the individual installation instructions for each mod, and learn how to use the http://wryebash.netai.net/, http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2097, and http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1111761-boss-better-oblivion-sorting-software/page__hl__Better%20Oblivion%20Sorting%20Software utilities. Those tools will do an awful lot of work for you. :user:

If you do all of that, I can't see any reason why you couldn't run the mods you want to run. The difference between Oblivion running well and running poorly comes down to effort and understanding as often as it does hardware.

Where did you get this from? Your system's specs definitely surpass the recommended specs for Oblivion. We are talking about mods here, and your system is fine for running mods too. We are only saying that you have a CPU bottleneck which would prevent you from running many mods or CPU-intensive mods smoothly.

Actually, after doing research with my PC's specs and asking around on other sites, no my PC doesn't meet the recommended specs in certain areas! (My CPU as well as my sound card!) The only way I could run Oblivion smoothly is basically setting my settings to "Medium" at best, which equals all the distant trees not showing up if I want to run a game that doesn't put too much demand on my CPU. And yes, I got this info from http://www.yougamers.com/gameometer/10098/! That same site is also telling me that my video card is not going to be able to run Oblivion at recommended, but is able to run it at minimum. Your PC most likely will be able to pass it, Tomlong, with the PC you have! It's just that the PC I have was given to me as a replacement for the one I had before that burned out due to a virus, but given to me without any regard games like Oblivion and it's mods!

That site needs to be fixed, the Oblivion test for it the because your system is well beyond the official recommendation: http://www.elderscrolls.com/games/oblivion_faq.htm

Edit: Your PC has an two extra GB of RAM, 4x the VRAM and your 1.9GHz DUAL CORE kills the Pentium 4 3GHz. There is a HUGE difference between the old Pentium 4 architecture and practically any dual core.

Edit: The first machine I ran modified Oblivion on had a Pentium 4 3.0GHz processor and an 8800 GT 512 MB VRAM. I was running OOO and AWS and whatever. Your system is fine for running modified Oblivion. As I said earlier, the mods you explicitly mentioned should be runnable. I also said that you need to go through that codec list because it is likely that it is the source of some of those crashes you experienced.

Sorry, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion will not run on your computer.

* The Game-o-Meter detects that your video card has 64 MB onboard video memory. You need to upgrade to a video card with at least 128 MB onboard video memory.

Needless to say, I lol'd. That site's testing is entirely inaccurate if it can't tell how much VRAM is on this card.
