This weapon is cool to find, but a game breaker

Post » Sat Dec 19, 2015 7:33 pm

Minor spoiler that most everyone probably knows....

I finally got around to getting the UP77 "Limitless Potential". The story behind it is fun, and I wish there were more things like this in the game, beyond the endless "Kill 'em all and let God sort 'em out" missions.

I feel like I'm swinging Thor's hammer around or something. As long as I don't run out of fuel cells, there's almost no point to carrying any other weapons around. Between the fire rate, damage, and no reloads, even an energy resistant enemy will get worn down fast. I'm already suffering from the curse of Bethesda Godhood, the point in the game where I can kill enemies by farting on them. This just puts the final nail in the coffin.

I've never found that gun, but I do have the Wazer Wifle with the same effect. I always have trouble finding enough Fusion Cells, though, so I don't know if it's that practical.

My way to deal with overpowered weapons: I sell them.

Sure, but that's the same problem I have with being a high level character- if you've got to deliberately hamstring yourself just to make the game challenging, why bother playing? There's no point to good loot and character advancement if you can't make use of it.

Well, that was kind of the point of getting to a really high level. Are you already at max difficulty, though? That might help.

As for Limitless Potential, the Unlimited modifier is really cool but I feel like there are still better ones. I have a lot of fun with Survivor's Special, and the ones that actually add bonus damage might be more worthwhile than never having to sit through a reload animation.

Yep, been on survival mode for a while now. I'm finally getting around to the glowing sea, and it's more of a challenge, which I like. But all that means is that I've got to take it seriously, not that it's terribly hard. Beats swatting raiders around like some Hulk/Iron Man combo, but I even there I feel overpowered.

Please don't make mmorpgs from single players. It's not supposed to be balanced, you are suppose to eventually become OP, not grind for hours to get little better.

This kind of thinking already influenced the way they make the game. We have 500 copy/paste generic locations, instead of having 100 well developed ones with good plots. There is already quantity over quality, good single player experience slowly fading away.

I think you're making good points, especially about the locations being too many and too generic. What I would really like to see is a more graduated difficulty. FO4 does get tougher the further you are from the starting point, but I'd have preferred to see a much steeper "slope".

As I said in another post, I'd have liked a game where getting to Diamond City in one piece felt like a major, mid game accomplishment.

I'm new to the Fallout series. I kind of agree with the scarecrow  I though going south was going to be very, very difficult. Boy was I wrong. It was and is, but not as much as I was anticipating. Having "The Last Minute" probably didn't help either lol This seems to be a trend with games. Seems like they are making them easier...*shrugs*

I tend to take them out for a spin and then hang them up on display.

Oh, wait, there's no display racks.

I put them in a crate, that's what I meant.

You spend the time getting good at a game, and then complain because you are good... That's just odd.

While this is true, it would be nice to have a remotely challenging bethesda game without having to wait months for a great difficulty mod.

I honestly don't know of an easier rpg series.

I think they made the sliding difficulty level for that reason. And if it is too easy for you at hardest level, then play the second game they gave you. The Wasteland Sims! I enjoy the difficulty myself. but I build a lot, too.

I guess so, but the little, 20% chance to cripple, 45 I picked up, then modded into a .38 Auto, is a complete game changer.

Anything big and fast becomes helpless almost immediately, I just hose it down with the most common ammo in the game and voila instant comedy. The Castle mission was just stupid.

I use carefully measured doses of my favorite alcoholic beverage to increase the difficulty.

That's not the problem. The problem is that, just by playing- not cheating, not min/maxing, just playing- you inevitably get to the point where you feel like you've "broken" the game, and it's no longer challenging or interesting. Sure, those of us who love these games and play them a lot are going to be better at it, and have a good instinct for what works and what doesn't. But our reward for that should be steeper challenges towards the end, not having to stop and start over with a fresh character, or deliberately playing the game "stupidly", ie not building the most sensible build, or not using weapons, abilities and equipment you've got access to.

I think Fallout 3 was supposed to be like that with Rivet City. You were supposed to go through all the GNR stuff and use the tunnels to get there. Whereas I looked at the map, and decided to skim along the river like a stone...

I modded mine out as a Sniper.

Eventually I hung it up in favor of a Legendary Gauss Rifle with 30% Penetration. Now I make Raiders go all Explody ;)

I just prefer using Ballistic Weapons for close in work. It somehow "feels" better.

What about the people who don't know how to properly build a character and haven't been playing games like this for years and years?

What about the people like me who want to build a character that has no endurance and no combat ability and is basically working on a system of delayed gratification where I will be rewarded around level 25-30 when I get the Gun Nut 3 and Science 3 perks and make some overpower weapons that actually give my character the ability to hurt someone?

Do I deserve a game that is unplayably hard because I chose a different build type?

What I am saying is that it is 100% impossible to balance a game like this, there simply is no way to make it work for all 10 million people who bought the game. Certain people are simply just better at the game. Even between my two separate builds, it would be impossible to have it be balanced for both, and I am one person...

If you are one of those people who are just too good at this for your own good, that is why there are mods to customize the game to your desired experience. The difficulty level is fine for the average gamer.

Just wear less armor and the game becomes more difficult. As it is, by the time you get ballistic weave you can make yourself very hard to kill. This is a problem with a lot of RPGs.

I wouldn't say you're wrong, exactly. And I'm very glad that anyone still makes these incredibly expensive, difficult to make games. And I'm sure I'll buy the next Bethesda offering eagerly.

But none of that changes my feeling that, since FO3, they haven't done much to cater to those of us who are "too good at this for our own good". (What's that even supposed to mean? :) ) The games are built with consoles, casual players, and newbies in mind, and the business reasons for that are obvious. I just wish Bethesda wouldn't rely so much on mods to take care of those of us who want more of a challenge. A game should account for players like us out of the box, and not have to be modded six ways from Sunday just so we can enjoy it all the way to the end, too.

I'm really old. My first computer game was "Star Trek" played on a teletype hooked up to a mainframe over a 110 baud modem. Then I got in to text adventures... So, for me, this game is hard enough. i die all the time, on normal, even though for my level my gear is pretty good. My settlements are awesome though.

My point, if I have one, is that the sweetspot for how hard a game should be is hard to find. If it was much harder I wouldn't buy it. Or if I did, I wouldn't play and buy DLC and sequels. Pleasing both me and the folks who find surivival too easy is impossible, I think. Based on that idea, I think Bethesda for all thier faults does a good job on balance.

I'm almost 70 now. The game is pretty easy on Survival and I never use VATS. I've been playing shooters since Doom and my chops, seriously eroded by ESO, are coming back. I might even be able to play some Stalker soon. ;)
