To be honest, after Skyrim and the fact it took upwards of 10 mods to make it worth playing, I had reached the conclusion that all Bethesda games were flawed gems that, while glorious in terms of freedom and gameplay, will always need extensive modding before they are enjoyable. So I am very surprised to find that Fallout 4 is actually enjoyable right out of the box. It doesn't have me rushing to nexus mods for anything. So good job there. Not saying there aren't things that I'll look for mods for later. But this is the first time since Morrowind I've played a vanillia, unmodded Bethesda game and enjoyed it.
I love everything about Fallout 4! I am pretty new to the series. I avoided 3 because I wasn't into the aesthetic. But with fallout 4 you've managed to balance the look of a post apocalyptic wasteland with adding enough color to actually make it worth spending time in the universe.
I adore the perks system. I love it because it does the exact same job as putting 100 skillpoints into a skill, but does in a way that feels more natural to the end user, and this has also resulted in a vastly more interesting level up screen. Instead of being confronted with a bunch of numbers and a boring list of perks, there's now a graphical chart which is infinitely more interesting and varied.
I think most of the people who hate the game, from what I've read of their reviews, have taken arbitrary umbrage at the new perk system but without really thinking about what the perk system does. Putting a star in lockpicks for example is functionally identical to manually assigning a multiple of 25 skillpoints under the old system except that the new system is more streamlined. I just don't see what the big deal is.
I did go back and play fallout 3 in the month before release. Mostly so that I could see for myself if Fallout 4 was a step forward or not. And I feel like fallout 4 is definitely a step forward in every possible way. It takes everything that's in fallout 3 and refines it to where everything is smoother, slicker, and more fun.
My only complaint is that the inventory interface is awkward as always, it needs more advanced sorting, and it badly needs searching, but then this is something I'm used to in Bethesda games, and it's not as bad as in previous bethesda games in that it doesn't feel unbearably bad, just more of a minor annoyance that I'll find a mod to fix later.
