Those long pole-things with pointy ends...

Post » Tue Mar 08, 2011 11:19 pm

Oh, yeah. Spears. Duh.

Don't freak out! This isn't a complaint/rant thread.
I was thinking about TES while enduring the daily commute and remembered that silly rumor that some NPCs say in Oblivion.
"I found some nice pauldrons at the armorer." Or something like that.
Well, this is an obvious poke at us fans who totally flipped when we found out that pauldrons were fused to cuirasses in Oblivion.
The devs mocked us. Rather cruelly, I might add. Though it was funny.

To the point: (ha! Get it? To the point...spears...y'know, like--nevermind)

I was just wondering if the devs might decide to put in some silly rumors about spears, and what the community might think of this.

Do you find it funny?
Mean-spirited?
Uncalled for?
Clever?

None of our opinions really matter here, but I thought it would be nice to discuss.

Also, post your version of the silly spear rumor if you have a good one!

"So, I heard that some sort of beetles from Akavir have decimated the ash tree population here in Skyrim, as well as destroying almost all the spears! There isn't a single one to be found!"

"I found a nice, straight branch in the woods yesterday. I broke it off and made myself a spear-- it's quite lovely."

etc, etc.

It rhyms with near, certainly can be feared, but not something to hear. you shouldn't handle it with beer and it is definently not a deer.

For the ladies of night

"I could wax your spear for a couple septims, Eh? Oh, wait, you don't have one."

I'd also like to see a spear in the showcase of the weapon shops. But not be able to obtain it :P

Hm. I didn't mean for it to be, but I might have referred to it subconsciously.

I kinda felt insulted when Miaq (in proxy for the Devs) mocked people how liked having an option for ranged weapons other than just bows, that chide crossbow comment did not tickle my fancy one bit. Especially since they could have made at least one or two crossbows in the time and money it took them to make miaq's stupid comment.

I think you mean "Mean SPEAR-ited"
Spoiler
I like bad jokes. Don't judge me.

Maybe have a side conversation that goes like
"What happened to your spear, Johnny?"
"My maid was polishing it and she screwed up the wood on it."
If you go to the guys house, you'll notice that his maid is an Argonian.

They should have M'Aiq the Lair talk about a Spear-Headed Were-Shark.

Make a unique artifact weapon that is a spear (the only one in the game), and hide in a hidden dungeon.
M'Aiq gives subtle clues to where that dungeon is.

The only spear in the game should be owned by M'aiq, and he would mock us for not having one

The Bonfire of the Spearities. In the Imperial City, any and all spears were burnt in the middle of town, due to them being considered overpowered by the Nerevarine, who had returned from Akavir.

well your doubts don't make a difference because they could, if I can make my own in the time its takes them to hire a voice actor, record the snide comment (would take more than just one take), edit and pay the guy they could have made at least several more crossbows than I can make. keep in mind the money they could have redirected into their budget for adding more weapons. its all irelevent but the point is they made a diliberate choice to not put in crossbows when they could have and decided to be lazy thinking no one would notice that the only ranged weapons in the game were bows. thats just one weapon, what if the only melee weapon in the game were warhammers?

Bows > Crossbows

'Nuff said.
I'd rather have Devs spend their time on more important stuff.

They already had the voice actor. It took him as long as it took to speak in game.

Crossbows would take a considerable amount of time, days, weeks.

I'm not argueing against crossbows, just pointing out the flaws in your logic :)

Come on, guys. Keep it on topic please. Don't get my thread locked.

On topic: "Gee, too bad Kvatch got destroyed, all of our spears were in there :( "

"I heard that the spear industry may never fully recover. Ever since the Oblivion Crisis all those years ago, when Kvatch--the center of all spear production in Tamriel--was destroyed, all the spear-makers joined the skooma trade. Now there isn't anyone who really even knows what a spear is, much less how to make one."

it takes me less than 8 hours to make a crossbow (and I am not a profeesional). and voice acting takes more than just speaking into a microphone, and the point was about them finding a voice actor to say that line it was that they could have just left out that line about crossbows and they would have more money to redirect to putting in man hours to developing more weapons. I am not singling you out or any thing, and I get that you are not against crossbows. my ire is directed at the devs not you. you may think my logic is faulted, but my statement is not based on opinion but on from my own personal experience as a modder.

I am one guy and it takes me about a day to make a crossbow from scratch, they have an experienced team of developers. the fact that they could have put in crossbows without any difficulty is not at contest, they simply chose not too and who knows why.
